Annular Solar Eclipse Saturday, October 14th

Forums:

Starts at 9:13 AM PDT. Most of the US West should get a pretty good look at it, but don't gaze directly please, or the ring of fire might fry your eyes. Looks like folks between Eugene and Medford, and those who live west of there, will get the best show.

We've got our eclipse glasses and they also have the date for next year's total eclipse written on them.

It'll be a little early in the day for me to chase down a clear view (hills in the way) but I'm looking forward to the sky getting dark for those few minutes.

Down in southern Utah near Capitol Reef. My buddy's having an eclipse party. Should be excellent viewing here. There's people all over the desert. Warnings of a shortage of gasoline due to too many tourists clamoring for the liquid gold to make it back home.

I'm loving the spooky light. No eclipse glasses, but I made a pinhole camera on a 3x5 card.

No special equipment needed, just a double-pane window.

Cool

nothing here but clouds :(

We had clouds, too. But! The clouds thinned and moved around enough that I had one miracle view through the shifting clouds of the thin ring of light around gray darkness. Sneaky, not bright. It was momentary and a shock and very cool. Didn't need the glasses.

I didn't notice the sky getting/being dark, probably because of the clouds.

The glasses are so dark (with a reflective coating on the lenses on the side away from the viewer) that I couldn't even seen anything.

It was cloudy at our place, and I had to leave a few minutes before 9:00.

At 9:05 the clouds broke in one little spot and a small hole opened up right where the sun was - must have been the same one you saw, Judit, Cars were stopped all along the road and folks were staring up into the sky.  I saw a smoky, wispy "wedding ring" for a minute or two as I drove along.  Flocks of birds began congregating in the road.

Then the clouds closed over once again.

Caught a few partial glimpses a couple of minutes later.

Thanks for mentioning the birds, Surfdead. They were very quiet and then one-by-one they started "chirping" - doing their bird talk - until there were quite a few. It was very cool.

we had three male mallards show up in the pond.

left when it was over

hadn't had ducks in the pond for a month

My cat knew was something was up. He insisted that I give him some extra treats.

Picture from southern Utah a few miles from Capitol Reef Nat'l Park. We had the "Ring of Fire" for about 5 minutes.

This is a friend's phone pic (with eclipse glasses in front of it).

My siblings traveled to Oregon for a chance to see the eclipse.  I was going to join my neighbor and friends and head out to the Fort Rock Oregon area (or some other rockhounding spots nearby), but travel schedules didn't allow for that.  They had a good time enjoying what downtown Corvallis had to offer, so within a few blocks of their hotel in a day and a half;  Drag show at Common Fields (food trucks w/ beer / wine), old timey swing / jugband music at the Old World Deli (Wild Hogs band), 2 intense short films at the Darkside Cinema (Strange way of life, The human voice),  also food at the new Syrian Restaurant (Khalo Naser), Squirrels Tavern, Wise Cracks, and the Old World Deli.  I can supply links to everything, but instead the Syrian food was really that good!!!

As to the eclipse, with the storm approaching, and our area in dense fog, and my siblings plans to drive back to Seattle when it was over, we went to Willamette Park, sat on a bench in the fog facing a nice view of the river.  There were geese, song birds, and a white egret to enjoy.  We told stories and laughed, meanwhile a dozen people gathered around us and did the same...  hilarity ensued.  We may have wanted to watch the birds react (they did), and for it to get darker (it did), but this way more fun!

Glad to hear you made the best of the day, Noodler.

We did both. We had the "Ring of Fire" for five minutes around 10:30 (still chilly - down to 31 that morning) and nine people showed up at my friend's place for the event by Friday night. A packed house. Good times. Dinner for 14 on Saturday, music party after, and a hike on Sunday. Great weekend.
