Fat Slice, a pizza place on Telegraph Ave. in Berkeley, is closing after 34 years.
Now this was far from great pizza, it was ok, but if you were looking for something big, fast and cheap after a Greek show,
this was the place where many folks ended up.
Things change, time marches on...

Back in the day if we couldn't make it to quarter meal, fat slice (futon mattress w/sauce) would def fill the void in the belly.
Blondies was my preferred slice.
RIP Fat Slice

fat slice was disgusting.
fat slice was disgusting. right down the street on channing, just a block or two away, is artichoke bassile, one of the best, if not the best, slice shop in the bay area. their signature artichoke slice is an abomination, not even pizza. id recommend everyone steer clear.
but the plain sicilian slice or the plain round slice are incredible. stylistically they both have some major differences from a classic nyc plain slice or a classic sicillian slice, but IMO the plain slice stands up to all but the best NYC institutions and the sicilian slice is by far the best sicilian slice in NYC. imo it beats the pants off of even the classic NYC sicilian slice favorite; prince street pizza. unfortunatley the berkeley location is not quite as good as the NYC ones...IME the cali kids making the pizzas are to scared to get the bottom of the sicilian slices blackened. if you grew up around real NYC pizza, you know that black spots on the crust do not taste acrid or burnt, and they add an essential and delicious flavor to the slice. the cali kids working at the berkeley location grew up with crap CA pizza like fat slice, and it seems like the blackened spots on the crust have been lost in translation between a pizza town and a non-pizza town.
maybe not every closing of a major cultural institution in a town or city is a bad thing. maybe the closing of a low quality pizza joint selling what basically amounts to cheesy tomato bread, and a nearby pizza shop serving high quality pizza made by people who are passionate about pizza is a sign of positive cultural change.
blondies is only marginally better. still an embarrasment to pizza. i guess i give blondies a bit of a pass...when i was going to high school in pleasant hill, the only faint whiff of counterculture in town was blondies pizza right next to rasputin records. now it seems like any other average business park, but when i was a teenager, it seemed like an oasis of counterculture in a vast desert of suburban WASPs.

What inspires more zone wrath
What inspires more zone wrath/strong opinion... The Family Band or pizza?
Trump comes in a distant 3rd.
And I'm not big on eating right before or after shows, but I do miss Oscars from the old days of waiting in line all day at the Greek.
Not being a foodie I have no idea if that place was considered good or not, but my friends & I always hit that place when hanging in Berkeley.
