I saw him once in a group with George Brooks & Zakir Hussain. Those players were all in a Brooks group called Summit, but Summit also had Steve Smith on drums.
As great as Smith is, the one show I saw with Zakir as sole percussionist was otherworldly and allowed Eckhardt space to really lead and show his skills.
I was the guy that named Garaj Mahal at a name the band contest at the Connecticut Yankee in Potrero Hill about 15 yrs back.
They posted my name on the Garaj web site and stated I had free lifetime access to any of their gigs.
Interestingly, I ran into Kai on Christmas Eve at St. Cyprian's Church during a service by the Church of Jon Coltrane in SF.
He told me that Garaj Mahal would be doing a couple of one off gigs in '17 and reforming - and that if I had interest I was welcome to attend for free.
Only problem: the initial gigs will be in BC, Canada....
Kai is an amazing person and musician!
One of the coolest gigs I've ever seen him play was at the Cowell Theater at Fort Mason in SF in '01 with George Marsh on Sax, Zakir on Tabla and the amazing Mike Marshall on Mandolin. A true East meets West Gig where they did everything from Bluegrass to Rock to Raga....
Nice to hear Garaj Mahal will be doing some gigs- i stopped my lessons with Kai a few months ago, so am mostly out of the loop with his current projects.
Here's a short clip of Kai talking about John McLaughlin coming over to his apartment to audition him for his band.. it's pretty funny

I've been a fan ever since.

There's some reference to my review of the gig here but the place it was published (PauseRecord.com) is long gone...
