Band calling itself Marshall Tucker Band

Forums:

Marshall Tucker is a great band, but never seen them live and assumed they were all dead or retired by now.   But I just saw that the Marshall Tucker Band was playing a festival at a park in the Dalles next weekend and apparently they still have the original singer, Doug Gray.   I don't if they are any good these days, but still might be worth the drive and camping.   The Dalles sucks and is in a treeless, arid region at the east end of the gorge and is pretty conservative, which might make car camping in town sketchy,

Anyone seen the latest incarnation of Marshall Tucker?

Opening band is Roger Fisher, formerly of Heart.  Never seen that dude either, but imagine he is still a good guitar player.  Roger Fisher got kicked out of Heart for an onstage meltdown after Nancy started dating the drummer.   Guy smashed his guitar on stage in the middle of a song, stormed off, and got into a nasty fight backstage.

if you just want to hear some Marshall Tucker band-ish music...

Last two times I saw them Doug talked a lot and played a tambourine.

About it. Absolutely nothing special.

I saw Doug with "Marshall Tucker" at the Benton County Fair a long time ago, I suppose it was better than what I expected (the guitar solos were good, kind of had their feel), but I saw them with the Caldwell brothers back in the 70's, and it was one of the best shows I saw in that era!  In that sense, not even close...

Their songs done bad are still good songs.

I saw Marshall Tucker when I was a senior in high school at the New Haven Coliseum. Spring 1978, I'm thinking. Charlie Daniels opened, and there were lots of cowboy hats in the audience, even though the place was filled with mostly suburbanites. I guess it was a good show; they played all their hits. But I didn't have the most critical ear back then, so who knows. Once was enough.

The way I heard it, Roger Fisher was the one caught cheating on Nancy, which is what got him kicked out of Heart, which was bad for everyone, as the original band disintegrated and they never made as good music as their first records again.  It might be worth it just to see Roger, but the rest of it sounds tepid at best.

I want to see Court Martial Tucker Carlson.

Lol.

Todays MTB not so much,, but its hard to hold a candle to the original band - they were incredible. They ain't been much since their heart and soul -  Tommy + Toy died.  While they were around, MTB was a major force to be reckoned with. They were hotter than a June bug in July,, top tier hard rockin' southern ass kickers. Seen em lots back in the day with Charlie, Skynyrd, Grinder Switch, Sealevel, Wet Willie, 38 Special,, all the good ol boys. Now that Doug can barely sing anymore they're just a good cover band. At a camping festival,,, sure why not, nostalgia's always fun. I met Toy once after he had left tucker and asked him to play Ab's Song,,, he was surprised I requested it and played it so sweet I was in tears. Tucker was one of the greatest bands to ever grace a stage,, they killed it warming up the dead @ that Englishtown NJ show.

A New Life is still in my album rotation.

One of those albums where every song is good.

Saw them a few years back opening for Dicky Betts (who was as surly as a man can be). I like Marshall Tucker and saw them back in the day where they could fill an arena. These guys were a far cry from that. And talked waaay too much for an opening band. I don't think Doug Gray was with them but could be wrong on that. But live music is still king.

>>>>>talked waaay too much

John Sebastian and David Crosby are like that too.   I have had to restrain myself to not yell:  "Shut the fuck up and play some damn music."

Got a ticket for the show so will see how it is.  Going with zero expectations.

A few years back Marshall Tucker Band played at a SF Giants game with Barry Sless sitting in on Pedal Steel.
They played Madison Bumgarner's SF Giants walk up theme song. Fire on the Mtn?????? Something of the sort.
I think I even posted as a DNB Sideshow.

Grey also has gone Trump anon.

Mike, I'm pretty sure I was there as well and have about the same reaction.

I saw MTB in their heydey at Englishtown '77 , and a finer band you could not see. In recent years, I've walked out 3 songs in on a "MTB' show (Only original member Lead Singer Doug Gray and his voice is shot!) As far as I'm concerned, he's dragging his band name through the mud.

You fellas may wanna pass on Roger McGuin.

This has been a public service announcement.

At the little fest in the Dalles right now.   Went with zero expectations, and so far, expectations not exceeded.

Local Latin rock group opening.  Percussionist dude's claim to fame is that he was in Joe Cocker's band at Woodstock and his daughter is singing.  Total lounge musak and just heard the most anemic Oye Como Va ever.  Painful.

Next up Roger Fisher from Heart.

The guitar playing in Hillbilly Band song might be ok.

A little chicken pickin.

I'll bet they're better than Colt Ford at the Jackson county expo

Tommy and Toy Caldwell started a band in high school. Then got drafted.

Served as green berets in vietnam. Finished their tour of duty and returned to start the mighty

MTB

Carolina Dreams is a fantastic road trip album.

They were actually in the Marines, but at different times. Tommy went in a little over a year after his brother had already been discharged.

damn good music

Here is a wonderful Toy Calwell tune I absolutely love.

How did the rest of the show turn out, Ken?

Sucked.  Shittiest music fest I have been to, but good thing I have an appreciation for the absurd and bizarre.

The venue is called the "Lewis & Clark Festival Park" and is right downtown in the Dalles.   Nice city park, but problem is that its is sandwiched right between I-84 and a railroad line.  Every 30-45 minutes, a train would roll on through drowning out the music.

The setup for vendors was ridiculous with one beer/booze stand for a crowd of about 2,000 people who came to party.   Took about a half hour to navigate, but at least there was no limit on the number of drinks you could get (see how many cups you can juggle) and the ladies working the stand made the stiffest mixed drinks this side of Belize.

Roger Fisher had a decent Heart cover band (they reminded the crowd over and over that Roger co-wrote many of the classic songs).  They had a pretty good faux Ann Wilson, but no substitute for the real deal.  Fisher is a good enough guitar player and had a great crunchy tone, but the sound guy should have been dragged out back and shot.   Levels were all over the place with annoying feedback.  Dude almost shut down the set because of the sound problems.

A grass fire broke out along I-84 during the Fisher set.  Made for a cool looking sunset and there were two spotter planes that kept buzzing low above the venue adding to the absurdness of the whole scene.

Marshall Tucker came on last and it was, uh, interesting.   With only one original member, singer Doug Gray, it was basically a MTB tribute band.  The players smoked and, standing alone, was kick ass.   Problem was that Doug Gray can't sing worth shit anymore.   It was bad, really bad.   Sounded like Lemmy Kilmister with a bad cold but without the force and projection.   He sang about half the songs and the rest were either the other dudes singing or "doubling" Gray's vocals.  The "Take the Highway" was epic.  Jammed it out, went into another song, and the back again, but it was the flute player singing.   It must be a Faustian bargain for the other dudes in the band.  They could put themselves out there as a top notch MTB tribute band and make a modest living or drag out Doug Gray and embarrass themselves night after night and get to book themselves as Marshall Tucker Band.

^funny

Do I see Coyotte in the band?

What showed much promise back when it was the New South with Jimmy Carter and the ABB has pretty much devolved into the same old Jim Crow bullshit.

Hard to be a commie southerner.
