Good friends and a damn good time

Show dedicated to Stan Owsley

furthur blows away deadnco....not even close.

best furthur show i saw was first night of tower run in 2011, march. man, the place was absolutely flooded w/ lsd, good times. bad first set but the 2nd made up for it-total phil set- that was the best they could do i think. was all downhill from there lol:

https://archive.org/details/furthur2011-03-18.schoeps-mk4.taraski.113411...

That Bear show kicked ass. As did many others, especially when JK, Russo and Phil would lock in and just go.

Bobby was pretty good too for a while until his weeble started to wobble. After that, it was spotty.

Yeah, that Owsley tribute was a great time.

The next night was fun also with guest appearances by Larry Campbell, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall & Teresa Williams.

I had an outstanding time with Furthur.

I liked all the Furthur shows I attended except the last one - 9/25/13 at the Cuthbert. The playing was technically OK, but the vibe was just awful. My comment at the time - "Who died?"

Guess it was the band in its death throes.

miss this band terribly, D and C is so awful, That Corrina was just painful...oh well

furthur blows away deadnco....not even close. )))))))))))))))

I disagree w this statement. I really like how DeadCo are sounding this tour and look forward to Shoreline, Chula Vista and Boulder.

I did enjoy going to see Further especially at small venues like TXR and The Beacon . My two favorite sets of Furthur shows were Shoreline June 3 & 4 2011

I too have to disagree, the only thing Deadco has going for it is that they are better than Furthur. I thought that band, and JK in particular, were awful.

We did the 11 tour from South Carolina >Atl> 3 Florida shows. That UBC from Orlando was the strongest tune of the run, but the rest of the Orlando show was ok.

Further would of been better with JM on lead Guitar imo, but as others have said I think Further was the better of the two bands but not by a lot

I'm with you, T.  Furthur was better for 3 reasons:

1. Phil was in the band.

2. I like JK's vocals vs. Mayers.

3. Phil was in the band.

^4. Russo> Mickey & Bill

I just wish that JK had a chance to  be up in the mix like Mayer is. Have to agree 100% with the “who died” Furthur crowd. Dead & Co crowd is way better.

Furthur was just all over the map. I saw some truly horrible shows that I left early, but this show was better than many Grateful Dead shows I went to. The first set Pride of Cucamonga Cumberland are just amazing and that second set - well if they had done that in the 80’s or 90’s people would have had seizures. They just never seemed to figure out who or what they wanted to be. With all the complaints of Dead & Co you have not doubt about who they want to be.

1994 Grateful Dead?

>>>1994 Grateful Dead?

Now you are just insulting Jeff

Meh.  While I saw several Furthur shows and none was "bad", I'd have preferred it if Phil spent that time road-testing some Friends.

The funny thing in it all is that we all know it is better with Phil, but as soon as they put the name Dead into it, it goes from 3,000 -8,000 seat arenas to 18,000 sheds. The majority of those extra people that show up are lucky to know any band members name beyond Jerry and Bobby.

Like Blues said I prefer the days when Phil and Bobby (and the drummers bands) we’re doing their own thing in them small halls over both further and dead co

but again that big dead co crowds, like El Niño said above, has a tone of energy and fun going on, and god bless them.

in the section of seats I was in at the St. Augustine show at the 11 further show there were two or three rows of people the had bused in from a local nursing home, second set a bunch of them were sleeping.

You don't know what you got until it's gone.

 >>>>>Have to agree 100% with the “who died” Furthur crowd

Actually I think you're disagreeing. The show I spoke of was the only bad one I saw - I'm a Furthur fan. The "who died?" vibe at that one show originated from the stage - the crowd was fine.

Bob was dying on stage playing with JK.

I had a blast at all the Furthur shows I saw, particularly in 2010 and 2011. Standouts for me were the really rainy night at Cuthbert in Eugene, the Missoula show and the MSG shows.

Toward the end, Bobby’s guitar started to sound like nails on a chalk board. Just a horrible tone the last couple times I saw them

7/2/2010 was a fine show in Columbus, OH!

The annual Red, White, and Boom fireworks celebration was happening nearby.

The band played long jams on King Solomon's Marbles and Let It Grow as the fireworks spectacular raged in the sky.

Looks like the Bear show was a good one.  I found Further tired and somewhat lethargic.  More trickly than powerful.  JK was a soloist who contributed little to the path and direction of the band.  Dead people toured as "The Dead" on many occasions and did not sell out stadia. The success of Dead and Company has nothing to do with the name "Dead" appearing in the band's name.  It has all to do with the energy and interplay of the band members.  Post-Dead bands have been like orchestras under the direction of whichever Dead members were present (particularly Phil).  Mayer often takes the wheel with Dead and Company.  It's interesting to see that Grateful Dead were different things to different people.  While they most certainly were all of these things, some people saw them psychedelic, some rock and roll, some Americana, some dance band.  I suppose each person's ear determines which Dead people bands they enjoyed more.  I'm grateful they have continued in many forms.  Phil is great.  I may check out his Vermont show in September.

^^^^^

Dead co isn’t selling out stadiums either..a lot of empty seats at citifield..especially Friday...And the dead name definitely helps sell tickets..ratdog w special guest John Mayer would not be playing citifield or dodger stadium ..

I suppose each person's ear determines which Dead people bands they enjoyed more.  I'm grateful they have continued in many forms.  Phil is great.

^^^^^^^ very well stated. Of all the offshoot bands they all had their ups and downs. 2010-2011 Further supplied what my wife and I were looking for.

I just miss Phil

Saw the first 3 in Oakland, bunch on the East Coast and the last Berkeley Greeks.

It was a fun ride with great times.

But by the time they hit the Greeks even though I thought they were good shows...

You could feel it was nearing the end for for this band.

Further was great. Dead&Co sucks

Anthony, if you replace Bobby with Phil in Dead Co do you think they are still selling out big sheds?

Phil would have to learn electric rhythm guitar first.

Well yes you would have to switch Otiel with a rhythm guitarist.

But imo without Bobby it the band and the Dead name then the majority of these people Don’t show up for Phil and the Drummers

Dead&Co will NEVER play a show this good.....

Im sorry, but , anyone who thinks that by having  the Dead in the name isnt helping sell  tickets, is just wrong....and def. Not my next business partner....;)

Meh, "The Dead," with both Bob and Phil, sold 9,000 tickets to each of their most recent gigs in my home state.  So, it didn't help the 2009 lineup much.  I suppose it helps some with the new converts.  Stay Dead, my friends.

Further was low key and played smaller mostly sold out venues.

They had a solid sound with some nice spacey jams.

JK wasn't my favorite but I felt he did a good job for what they let him have.

Jeff on the keys was a very strong addition the the band and I did like the back up singers to help Phil and Bob with some of the vocals.

Overall I feel Phil brought the psychedelic goods night in and night out with further. I went to a couple of melt your face shows and this was my favorite part of all the GD shows and offsprings. Phil and friends of old did that consistently too.

In comparison that is what is missing for D&Co. They do have space and drums but if you listen to a few D&C shows the drums are very similar every night. That was not the case with The GD. Drums were miles apart every night.

https://archive.org/details/furthur2010-09-21.GEMS.wharfratjoe.109988.fl...

Here is another one I went to that I really enjoyed.

"So, it didn't help the 2009 lineup much."

Dead$Co is marketed much more aggressively as being the updated Grateful Dead.

I'd forgotten about that Radio City show. Time to listen to that again.

Agree to disagree, I thought this band, especially JK, were beyond awful.

Wow, have to disagree there.  I really enjoyed Furthur.  Loved the setlists, loved the original songs, loved the energy.  Just a whole lot of FUN.

Dead & Co just don't do it for me one bit.

JK was too low in the mix too often, not really a driving the band type lead player (like Jerry) and his singing is only adequate - but I enjoyed just about every Furthur show I saw - especially the one at the Herkimer Castle.

Dead & Co.?  No. Just no, thank you.

Post 1995 - there has never been one band that everyone likes completely. Closest for me was the The Other Ones version that played at the 2002 reunion and subsequent fall tour. That band was close to being a band that just about everyone liked.

Everyone didn’t like the Q? Who are these people

>>Everyone didn’t like the Q? Who are these people

Many Bob Weir fans.

I tend to take it show by show.  All bands, even the GD, had good and bad nights.  You wont know if you don't go to the show!

I do think JK was really held back.  Which was a shame.  But I have had phun at all incarnations during these later years.

>>But I have had phun at all incarnations during these later years.

Fun is a good thing and I try to include it no matter where I go. Well, except for funerals, I guess.

I put the f u n in funeral.

Fly, so you're saying he could play guitar and sing better but chose not to because the other members of the band told him to?  that doesn't make any sense? Wouldn't Phil and Bob want him to be the best he could be for the fans? Very interesting opinion.

I liked Furthur also, but wonder if I would now.

>>>there has never been one band that everyone likes completely

Bimbo's lineup was the band that no one complained about.

>>>there has never been one band that everyone likes completely

Nor should there be.  Chances are if everyone likes a band then they aren't doing anything all that good.  I have very accomplished musician friends that think every thing the Beatles did was complete shit.  I, on the other hand, have a completely different outlook.

Crusader Rabbit

JK had the chops but lacked the balls and

Bob was no help with his karate chop signals.

I disliked Furthur.

Philo-  yes, I think Bob or more likely Phil  wanted him down in the mix and to not be a clone of Jerry.  JK can shred.  In DSO he often did.  At GOTV 10 year anniversary he was loud in the mix, respectful of the tunes and made us all boogie as the leader of the "house band". He did so with all jerry's friends. Listen to the "dont let go".  I think a few other folks alluded to JK being "held back" up in this thread. When I saw furth  I was always waiting for him to let loose. When he did it was great.  I think JM is given more freedom because he did not come from a tribute band.  I prolly think too much, or too little :)   .02

They didnt go far enough....

Thanks Fly, I saw him maybe a half dozen times with DSO, always thought his tone was weak and vocal scratchy without any real delivery. He seemed about the same with Philobby, IMO . I can't really get behind the 'held back' pov. I think it does say a lot when they wouldn't even take him back in DSO after the Furthur ended. I will say, at least Furthur tried to keep it affordable  for the fans. The Dead $Co.is a straight cash grab. Not that there is anything wrong with that :)

I had waaaay more issues with bobby dude in DSO!  And now Jeff Mattson is with them and he has always been a good player.  The band probably felt JK ditched them and they don't need him no mo.  Guitar was good, voice- meh but tolerable. Still, Furthur asked him back for a few tours (5 years?) so he must have done something they liked or he played for cheap.:)

I cant compare DnC and Futhur. Like oranges and grapefruit.

I hear ya, I've had 40-plus years worth of issues with the real Bobby :)

^^^

Post of the year!

lol

I saw JK with Oteil and Friends last weekend, I thought he was really good. No complaints.

I ate fake Bobby's dinner by accident once.

What? I didn't know it was his.

Further had some great shows. That castel shoe being one of the best. I wasn't there physically, but I had the stream going, the stereo cranked with woofers a'woofin', and a killer night on the Zone. Yeah, I felt like I was there for that one. Great setlist.

I have no problem with JK, in fact I like him. I supported him when he Zoned, and I guess I still do.

I never saw Further in person. Herkimer should have been the one.

Do tell about eating his dinner!

And Herkimer was fun, although the Castle was bogus and the drive in a nightmare.

How many of you saw Furthur with 2 drummers? (raises hand) That was all for me

I pretty much enjoyed all of the incarnations. Maybe I have a shitty memory, but in retrospect, to me, they have all been on th same color palate.

I saw a fun furthur show back in 2010. Or maybe it was just the acid.

>>How many of you saw Furthur with 2 drummers?

I did. Other than the high harmonies and overall enthusiasm, Jay Lane seemed superfluous.

This was a pretty damn good Further shoe

^^^^^ Wasn't super impressed by the initial Fox Theater '09 shows I saw, but I heard a recording of that Oakdale show soon after, and thought it showed the band really had something.

Of the Furthur shows I attended, the soundcheck at Mtn. Aire. is one of my favorites.  And no, I was not in a "suggestible state".  In fact, I was getting over a cold.  We had no idea how long they would play, since it wasn't a real show, but it turned out to be substantial!  Over two hours, no break.  This is the recording I suggest to people when they wonder if this band was worthy:
