A Band You Would All Like - Achilles Wheel

Forums:

NorCal Locals know this band and they are getting more well known.

I've seen them a bunch and even jammed with Johny Mojo - their great and super-friendly lead guitarist.

Caught them doing a free show the other night in the Bar at TXR (12/3).

Man these folks know how to write songs, create musical excursions and JAM!

Can't recommend them enough.

Here's a few vids I capped from the very front table - nice and steady.

I dig these peeps and reccomend you check them out:

Glad you like this band Treb, they are one of Nevada City's finest. Paul Kamm is a fantastic song writer. The 2 drummers and Paul are also in a GD cover Band called the Deadbeats that still play around town.

AC is going to do a New Years Eve Party in Nevada City at the Foundry. Please spread the word how good they are, they just need a few good breaks and they are on their way. Paul has a ton of songs he has worked up and just ready to put them on CD. We have been friends and seeing them in all sorts of bands for 30 years yes

I am going to see this Sat for Free  Paul Kamm is playing solo

Bart!

I FINALLY got to see these guys!  They were fantastic!  Johnny Mojo is an incredible guitarist and the band zigs and zags through a variety of musical styles, kind of like that Grateful Dead group, but with their own original tunes.  And some well-played covers, in their own style (see vid #1 above).

Great to see you on Birthday Eve, Treble.  And thanks for sharing the vids, set break cheer, etc.

Great bunch of people in the band...and it appeared that more than a few family members and good friends made the trek out here for the evening.

I'm going to try to see Achilles Wheel as often as I can.

The only time I listened to them I could hear that they were great at the music they play, it's just not music I enjoyed. Sounded like a string band or bluegrassy sound. Is that accurate?

They are broad in scope - very GD like.

They play music that's tinged with bluegrass, twang, folk, rock, blues, swing, boogie, jazz and funk.

Kinda like the band we all love.

Had a nice Spanish Jam sound at times, as well.  At times I heard teases of Cumberland Blues, Scarlet Begonias, and a few that I can't remember right now.  Also a few Christmas ditties.

One guy plays acoustic 6-string the whole time and Johnny played mando at times, butt most of those tunes still rocked out.

This may have also been the first two-drummer band to play the Bar and they pulled that off quite nicely.  Talked to drummer Mark about that and they obviously tried to play soft(er)-and-tight during the first set, then turned it up a bit for Set 2, when fewer people were dining.

I think that they are coming back to a gig in SF somewhere...or maybe they already did.

They are playing the Freight on Saturday, 12/30 and they played Slim's the same night as Jackie's Bday.

I tried booking Achilles to do a double bill at the Back Room in Berkeley but the Freight imposed a proximity clause on the band preventing them from playing in Berkeley 2 weeks prior to or after their Freight appearance.

I guess this leads me to making my first legit though somewhat buried VLZ Music Alert!

I'll be playing at the Back Room in Berkeley (backroommusic.com/) on Friday, December 16 in a fun double bill with Jimbo Trout and the FishPeople (with whom I'll be playing mandolin) and Fog Swamp (with whom I'll be playing upright bass).

If you are in Eastbania on 12/16 would love to see you there!

Ted

They aren't bad.

Caught them maybe two years ago when they came through.

Too bad they played Sam Bonds when they were here , that place blows and the sound in there sucks

A decent venue makes all the difference.

Tell 'em to apply to the Utah Arts Festival.      http://www.uaf.org/applications/music-application?utm_medium=email&utm_c...

You too, Painted Mandolin.

thought this was a MarkD thread, lol

he will be checking in here shortly, with rave reviews  smiley

+1 from me, very good band.

I will pass the info about Utah AF to the band Slickrock. I know they would be interested in expanding into that direction. I will be seeing their tour manager on Thurs. night. I sent Treblemaker's review to the band already. http://achilleswheel.com/videos-2/

Nevada City's finest with Joe Craven at Hangtown 2 years ago  they are even better now with a added keyboard player  Ben from Poor Man's Whiskey
