B.A.R.F. Dog Diet (Bones And Raw Food)...

Forums:

So there are many proponents of this style of doggy diet,  and of course, many detractors.

Last few months I've been feeding Hüsky a bit of that style,  maybe 20% of his total food intake weight-wise.

I suppose that counts the Bacon and Steak he stole.  But Bacon is really not what I consider a good dietary staple for H.I.M.  Too much Nitrates and sodium.

What he'll get is Turkey burger or thighs,  Chicken breast quarters,  Lamb bones,  and whatever cuts are cheap at the supermarket.  Although I'd like to attempt the B.A.R.F.  diet full-scale,  it seems like a lot of work and time to get it all balanced.  You need poultry,  Fish,  organ meats, this that and the other Bones.

Also I have a good investment in grain-free Kibble and cans,  which are loaded with Vitamins & Minerals.  So that's the morning meal,  and the flesh + bones are an afternoon Snack.  Definitely,  he enjoys the "BARF"  stuff,  but it ruins his appetite for regular old "Dog Food".

Anyone else working with these more natural Canine feeding techniques ??  Thoughts and experiences ?

I supplement his kibble with raw, but only about 10 of his total diet. When I break it down, it’s about the same cost as his kibble.

I run a few pounds of chicken wings through the food grater, so he gets the bones, but all chopped up. To that I add chopped up organic beef organ meat, chopped up beef, a few eggs, shells and all, and some yogurt.

I mix it all together and form it into 1/4 cup patties, which I freeze. He gets a few patties tossed on his evening meal. It seems like a batch lasts a month.

I am not but I would imagine that to go truly natural, you should force H.I.M. to get off the dole and hunt for his meals. Maybe bring you back some critters for the smoker.

I'd say feed the thieving bastard kibble and count on him stealing his supplementary caloric intake....

You're probably right.

Doesn't ring a bell.

Orange county lumber truck is a zappa tune.

I was a white suburban punk.

Our local organic poultry farm grinds up poultry, innards veggies and bone meal into patties. It's a very convenient way to feed raw. We've had good success feeding our pups this way.

We don't really have an old-fashioned 'Butcher Shop' nearby,  so I check the 1/2 - off section at the shop-rite for dog goodies.  Ground turkey or chicken is often there for $1.00 / lb. or so.  I'll sear up a patty on either side and mix it in the bowl.  Turkey thighs or legs I'll feed whole or chop a portion off with a cleaver.  The bones help keep the teeth clean.

Although I was concerned about potential Salmonella,  turns out it's not really a concern for Dogs.  But do your own research on that.  Your Dog may vary.

Anyway when he finds some stinky Deer carcass in the woods and grabs a leg to gnaw,  he's never gotten ill from that.  So a bit of supermarket turkey probably won't hurt H.I.M.

Thinking that grinding up a bunch of stuff and freezing might be the most efficient way to keep a good stash on hand.
