A few years ago I saw Larry Graham sit in with Prince. It was during that crazy run of Prince shows in Oakland that was like 19 shows. Larry Graham.....One of the best.
Not exactly a sit in, but the multiple bass chaos of Dee's Diner with Phil, Gordon and Les Claypool at the Jammys was pretty entertaining. For a while.
When the Neville Brothers sat in with the GD at the Kaiser on consecutive nights in 1986, Phil took a seat and let the Neville's bassist play on the first night.
There was a period of time when I lived in Burlington, VT that when friends asked who I was going to see that night, I would always answer "Mike Gordon." During that period of time, just before the Phish reboot was announced, I would see Gordon sit-in with sometimes up to three different bands in an evening at different venues. The dude was seriously getting his chops in order. In a six month period I must have seen Gordon 25 times doing sit-ins.
This photo is from a show at Higher Ground when Mike sat in with PBS&M; Porter, Batiste, Stoltz & McConnell (Paige). The double bass jam George Porter Jr and Mike Gordon did was off the wall great. This show happened a few days before the Phish reunion was confirmed.

How about Mike Gordon sitting in on Phil's 60th?
But I agree with the premise that it's not a very common occurrence.
