Bears Ears National Monument is restored!

Forums:

Slickrock let us know about when there were threats to the area. Just heard that it was restored today. From a post on Facebook:

"Dear Bears Ears Supporter,

We greet you with wonderful news - WE DID IT! Bears Ears National Monument is restored!

Today, President Biden honored his promise and restored the Bears Ears National Monument. In this moment of restoration it is your voices that are powerful and carry the messages of our ancestors. Through our combined efforts we shook the world and have now succeeded in an unprecedented effort, five Tribal Nations came together to protect their ancestral homelands.

This is evidence that Indigenous people can Stand in Power and demand more from our governments. It is when Indigenous people are included in the decision-making process that we are able to hear and apply the values of community members. This allows us to address issues that effect our day-to-day lives, instead of being causalities to consequence. When Indigenous voices are included, the outcomes are better for all.

It is here, now, and always that we have chosen to lead with the values of our people first and show up as stewards of our environment. It is with Tribally led co-management principles that we can demonstrate how intertwining our traditional teachings with "modern day science" can care for the Bears Ears Landscape in a way that is culturally sensitive and aware, yet economically beneficial to a region.

We thank the Tribal communities who have carried this fight for well over a decade, and to the people who advocated for protection of these sacred areas and recognized what is truly at stake.

It has been a responsibility carried out by many. It is still our responsibility to carry this work forward, monument designation is only the the first step in lasting protections. We need your donations to finish the job, as a non-profit we depend on your donations to keep the momentum going, now more than ever, your attention and support are critical.

Help us ensure that the Bears Ears National Monument will be protected forevermore.

Thank you for walking with us.

Thank you • Elahkwa • Ahéhee' • Kwakwhay • Askwali • Tog'oiak' "

J'Biden!

Solid work, Slickrock.

Hooray world and future generations!

(I drive past Donald J Trump State Park on the way to shows at the Cap in Port Chester)

Will laugh and offer the Phil Zone salute on the way past that signage on Monday

Those western parks have magic in the rocks and water and trees ... glad that they are again protected and no McDonalds or Starbucks popped up in the meantime.

Heading there next week to photograph an undisturbed cave full of Anasazi pottery.

A friend found it looking for bees. Sharing the location with a BLM archeologist.

Unbelievable it's still intact being 100 yards from a well traveled road.

Fucking rad joy

please post up some pics here after your trip?

Heading out Monday for 10 days. Gonna bring some wool socks. Pictures at 11....

Great news yesterday. I got a text while in the mountains driving home from Capitol Reef area.

Just spent the first week of my retirement in southern Utah.  Went to Moab on Monday and took relatives visiting from Arizona around Canyonlands on Tuesday, then headed past the San Rafael Swell south to Capitol Reef area on Wednesday while they went up to Park City. Hung in Capitol Reef area for a couple of days and came home yesterday.

Excellent news and there's big time joy for many for the occasional environmental victory!

And while Bears Ears is getting a lot of attention before Indigenous Day, let's not forget the restoration of Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument designated by Bill Clinton! It's an AMAZING paleontological treasure that was slashed by about 50% by those same actions a few years ago. So much has been discovered since the designation, and there's so much more to learn. Check out this most recent podcast from SUWA (#28) on restoring "The Science Monument." Amazing facts and figures as to what's out there. https://suwa.org/category/podcast/

Of course the politicians are pissed, threatening to sue the feds. The local mormon church-owned paper let the delegation editorialize in today's edition (posted yesterday afternoon) about the "Monumental Insult."  https://www.deseret.com/opinion/2021/10/8/22716955/bidens-expansion-monu... FUCK YOU, SONS OF BITCHES!

It's really amazing. They keep forgetting this is FEDERAL PUBLIC land that belongs to 326 million Americans. Obstinate local commissioners actually think they should be in the driver's seat. Luckily, the San Juan County Commission is now two Native Americans and an old Trumpie white guy, so when Utah talks about local control, things look and sound different in San Juan County.

Utah's attitude toward these federal PUBLIC lands is the main reason the Outdoor Retailers moved their very lucrative twice-yearly convention to Denver from Salt Lake. Utah will probably piss away some more tax dollars suing the federal government that they depend on for so much of their funding. Why the state and it's anti-environmental governmental officials should be such a force at managing lands they don't own is beyond me. Our delegation says they offered to work with the feds, but have done NOTHING in the last four years to cement this magical "legislative agreement" they're screaming for now. They didn't talk to anyone when they cut it back in 2017.

And that was the reason for this pic:

Here's some pics. I'm sure Ned, who's a great photographer, will be providing some more intimate shots I look forward to seeing.
