Best Concerts of 2018

Forums:

Saw many great shows, but David Byrne takes the prize:

David Byrne_0.jpg

Runner up would be Pearl Jam blowing the roof off the Tauron Arena in Krakow, Poland.

What are your top shows for 2018?

That David Byrne band looks like little action figure people on a toy stage.

That Portland Byrne show was damn near a religious experience for me and i still don't think it was the best show I saw all year.

I caught David Byrne at the Hult Center, loved it!

Just saw "This Must Be The Band" a week ago ... worth checking out as far as cover bands go.

The most memorable for me was Bob Weir & Wolf Bros (Albuquerque) ... it wasn't exactly face melting, but was "new" & really hit the spot.

Runner up would be Peter Rowan @ TBF ... again, not totally mind blowing, but it was good to see him on stage after health issues

Best set would've been:  Phish 1st Set Friday @ Dicks

Hult center was great too noodler, pretty epic tour

Apologies for the dreaded cross-post, but this is the proper thread for a 2018 list. Thanks for starting it Ken.

(As a side note, I saw the David Byrne show in San Jose and while I enjoyed it I wasn't as taken by it as many. In fact the Dead & Co. show I saw this year rated higher on my personal list. A good example of how music & shows are in the ear of the beholder)

There are still a few shows in the next couple of weeks that MIGHT break into my top ten (Dumpstafunk, Zigaboo Modeliste's 70th Bday, Karl Denson) but I figure my 2018 list is pretty much set, so here it is...

10.  Phish - Harvey's Tahoe, 1st show

09.  Marty Stewart & his Fabulous Superlatives, all acoustic - Freight & Salvage, Berkeley

08.  ROVA Saxophone Quartet - St. Cyprian's Church, San Francisco

07.  Chick Corea Trio - Miner Auditorium, San Francisco

06.  Phish, 1st show - Bill Graham Civic, San Francisco

05.  Taylor Eigsti Trio - Dinkelspiel Auditorium, Stanford

04.  Still Dreaming w/ Joshua Redman, Brian Blade & others - Miner Auditorium, San Francisco

03.  Everyone Orchestra w/ Phil Lesh, Stephen Perkins, Ivan Neville, Peter Apfelbaum, John Kadlecik & others - TxR, San Rafael

02.  Neil Young & Crazy Horse, 1st show - Warnors Theatre, Fresno

*01.  Phillip Greenlief & Joelle Leandre - The Lab, San Francisco

Now that I have the correct year I can add Paul Simon.  I thought his band was phenomenal, especially with the classical group Ymusic. That show could have easily been a greatest hits revue and I appreciated he went fairly deep in the catalog .

It says Ryan Adams on the awning

It’s a toss-up for favorite show of the year, but I’ll go with Vijay Iyer Sextet at Miner Audiorium, SFJazz. Simply amazing. The runner-up would be a one-off show with Joshua Redman, Lionel Loueke, Micheal League and Larnell Lewis at the GroundUp Music Festival in Miami.

Other highlights are Charles Lloyd & The Marvels with Lucinda Williams at Stanford, David Crosby at the Castro Theatre, Neil Young in Fresno (first night) and the entire JRAD PNW run.

JRAD in Eugene and Seattle were off the hook.

David Byrne in Vancover had the most original concept I've seen in a while (that actually worked).

Hot Tuna Electric w/ Kimock in Seattle and Portland rocked real good.

Paul McCartney in Edmonton still brings the energy, magic, and Beatlelove.

Phish at the Gorge because it's Phish at The Gorge.

Next Sunday will be hot tuna electric potential contender

I'm tossing in with the horde

Crazyhorse Fresno JFC

David Byrnes Tour opener @ Count Basie Theatre In Red Bank, NJ was exhuberent, innovative, danceable and overall outstanding.

John Mclaughlin with Jimmy Herring ‘Meeting of the Spirits’ was on it’s own stratospheric level though!

Billy Strings last November was a strong highlight.

Marty Stuart at Targhee was pert danged fine as was much of Targhee Bluegrass Fest with Billy Strings, I'm With Her, the Stringdusters, and Keller's PettyGrass.

Rob Ickes and Trey Hensley were really great at the Utah Arts Fest.

I think Bonnamasa was this year and for ambiance Nedfest.

David Byrne for sure... I caught his show in Birmingham and it was fucking fantastic...

Best five dollar show of 2018 that I saw last night

The coconuts with Harvey Mandel at the saloon in SF

maybe 100 people present and the bartender was quite effective

Miss The Saloon, love matters! Say Hi to Greg the doorman for me!

Glad to hear Harvey 'The Snake' Mandel is thriving after some health concerns in recent years. Wasn't he offered the guitar slot in the Stones that Ronnie would filled?

Tonight 12/30. Jackmormons @ Mississippi Studios. A righteous divinity in full effect.

Feel so blessed to once again seen many outstanding musical performances this year including legends like Neil young and David Byrne for the first time.

even got to see one of my favorite musicians, Mike Keneally, do an ultra rare performance in la where he played bass for most of the show.

Musically, I'd say ry cooder at the great American was one of the best shows I've ever seen.

That performance really took me to church and was just such a bath of pure Americana roots harmony goodness.

however, for the overall experience, my favorite show of the year was the residents at the Gundlach Bundschu Winery in Sonoma.

i don't even think there was more than 200 people there, if that.

it was frighteningly inmate, totally unique, bizarrely imaginative and just rad as fuck.

Right on E! It sounds like you had a good year.

The Residents show I saw in SF almost made my top ten list but just missed out because of the venue.

As good as the show was and as much as I like the Chapel in general, when the place is sold out it gets packed, and it was PACKED that night, and in the best of times the Residents are not what I would call a good group to stand up for. As it was, the night was hot, without much air and full of smashed bumping, squeezing, banging around. With my height & girth I can handle all of that, but at a Residents show I prefer to sit back and allow the show to unfold. And breathing has always been a priority for me, YMMV.

Did you know the group lost it's main musical contributor this year? He had retired from touring with the group a few years ago, but he was always the main guy writing their "music" and one of the two originals who were really the driving forces behind the group. He passed away a couple months ago.

But of course the Residents will always live on!

I did hear about the legendary hardy fox's passing a few months ago.

however, exactly how much he had been actually contributing to the group over the last couple decades is debatable.

and yes, the residents r immortal.

did u hear they did an unannounced performance at a SF bookstore a couple months ago based on the novel they put out this year called, 'the brickeaters'?

those guys r the shit

Esau's top two are Primus/Mastadon at the Greek and Ween at HSBG.
