Eggs were laid on January 25, January 28 and January 31. Pip watch began Feb 29. There may be some chicks in the next day or so.

Been watching these guys for a few years. Three eggs this time so fingers crossed. Weather has been absolutely brutal with those storms (snow piled high) but Jackie and Shadow handle it.

They've been getting coverage on the mainstream news  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNm7xwz2JfE  so the watch count is soaring, often over 30,000 people.

Plf9905 turned the Zone on to this back in 2019.

pretty cool. my friend lives in big bear. hope the chickies hatch!

Been watching for years - hopefully this year brings success

Thanks for the reminder. I've watched off and on for a few years thanks to reminders from Zoners.

I've been watching this recently.

Momma was really getting hammered with that recent storm. Nasty weather. She was really covering those eggs up tight.

Such majestic birds. America, fuck yea.

Nobody's minding the nest.

The changing off the guard earlier today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ep67hmI5eqI

Saw an interview with a news station where one of the folks from the organization said this first egg is probably not viable and if the other two don't do something this weekend, it may be 0 for 3.

damn you slick and your on-point reporting, let's hope for the best

I wouldn't go so far as damning him, but I always thought of Slick as more of the hopeful type.

What part of the world is your valley in, T.O.D.? From the trees, I'd guess east of the Mississippi.

I was joking mike

I actually respect all that slick brings to the board and his involvement in his local politics

No pip yet. I'm not on FB, but was able to see this post from Thursday from Friends of Big Bear Valley and Big Bear Eagle Nest Cam.

Jackie and Shadow, Nature and eggs…

Over the past few days we have received an amazing number of comments and feedback from our global community about Jackie and Shadow. We appreciate this amazing outpouring of support! Please rest assured that our team is working as fast as we can to get back to everyone and address all inquiries.

In the meantime and to assist in answering some of the more pressing questions, we will use this official Facebook page to update you and report our observations:

We understand that everyone is worried about the eggs, some afraid to watch the cam, some afraid to turn away.

We wish there was an obvious pip that we could report, but so far, there is not. We do not know why or how. But that is nature.

Eggs 2 and 3 are still within the possible hatching window. Egg 1 is probably not.

Sometimes watching nature is hard and our logical mind cannot understand and thinks it needs facts and absolutes. At the same time, our emotional mind wants to have something to hold onto, something to calm its confusion and its fears.

We stopped zooming on the eggs so often because it seemed to be causing more upset and concern than curiosity and calmness. If and when a pip happens, we do not have to know about it instantly. We will see it soon enough.

Watching nature builds our patience, our strength, our compassion and our resilience.

As a biologist, watching human as well as animal behavior, I know that sometimes when we worry, we tend to get upset with the people and things around us. Or to want to blame something…because that’s easier than feeling what is happening inside, especially sadness.

Please allow yourself to feel whatever you are feeling. When you feel it, it can dissolve.

And in the meantime, we will watch what is happening in nature…

Jackie and Shadow have not given up on anything and continue their dedicated egg care.

Tuesday morning Shadow showed up from the back porch shortly after dawn for an early morning duty shift. After a full night, Jackie was happy for a little break.

She arrived back with fluff about an hour later. Shadow did a short bit of arguing, because obviously, you can’t just give in too easily or your mate might get the idea you are a push-over. But he gave egg-duty to Jackie and even gave her a couple hours on the nest before coming in with more fluff.

They both brought fluff rather than sticks all day and they had smooth transitions the rest of the day…and a bit of a loud one when Shadow came in with a fish, as Jackie made sure everyone knew the fish was hers. The rest of the evening was Jackie’s.

Shadow arrived early again yesterday morning and this time they have quite a long discussion about it before Jackie agreed to let him take over. They had only another couple exchanges through the day, as weather clouds started rolling in. They both seemed to be a little jumpy and were off the eggs a couple times during shift changes. There were some sub-adult bald eagles in the area and their guarding activities to chase those intruders away may have been the cause.

By afternoon, snow had started, so Jackie took over nest duty as per Jackie’s rules. This morning, when the snow had stopped, Shadow showed up to take over. Jackie argued and then mumbled as she got up but looked a bit relieved to let him take over after sitting through the snowy night.

Thank you all for your continued support, patience and calmness as we all watch to see what happens next.

2 eggs now?

The eggs recently seem to be left alone for extended periods of time. Not sure if that's a bad sign.

Yes JP, it usually means they've given up and are ready to let nature take it's course. Last year some ravens came and did the dirty deed.

I haven't been keeping up since the eggs didn't hatch but seeing your post I checked and here's something from LAist. Looks like Shadow is still hoping.

Thanks for your good word above, T.O.D.

I never mentioned it here but I did get a call while watching a bowl game on Jan 1st. It was from the SL County republican party asking me to run for the state legislature.

After avoiding choking on my beer and pretzels, I told them I'd consider it and get back. I decided to do it as I thought it would be a hoot to have a republican candidate from Utah come out with radical proposals about water in the second driest state in the nation. Like to stop using 74% of Utah's water to grow alfalfa for cows and shipping it to China and Saudi Arabia (our guv's an alfalfa farmer), get cows off federal public lands in Utah, stopping the Lake Powell pipeline lunacy (a pipe from the lake to St. George), oppose the stupid idea of transferring federal lands to the state, stopping the expensive gondola proposal up to Snowbird and Alta in Little Cottonwood Canyon... the list goes on. Lots of stupid shit to come out against...or for. Then I got a call from the chair of the county party to discuss my "motivation", and he told me the assistance program I was working on for seniors was welfare. Then they had a weekend to check me out and probably saw some stuff on a google search and I got a call telling me they're running someone else so instead of going to a caucus and the convention to convince the clowns to vote for me, I got my filing fee back. But I could still run for something as a write-in and I'm considering it.

And after my experiences lobbying at the legislature the last two years, I wouldn't want to go there to deal with those total a-holes. This year was horrible. Gets worse every year.

But after filing on that Friday in my best clothing for my entry into Utah republican politics, it was a really fun weekend pondering the absolute lunacy of all that.

that's crazy, slick

ready to step up and take action, even if it means becoming one of them (in name only)

ballsy and inspiring

keep fighting the good fight, brother

GO SLICK ! cant beat 'em from outside, infiltrate and subvert...well played

That's it, Ripple. I was told one subversive thing we could do was sign up as republicans, so we can vote in their closed primaries so we can try to get moderates in there, not right-wing nut jobs.

Did it for the governor's race in 2016, and it came in play in '22 when we tried to get a moderate in instead of total a-hole Mike Lee. In fact, I was a delegate to the convention that year. The convention-going repubs are radical right-wingers. I guess that's how I ended up on the call list this year, being a delegate last time. Didn't bother this time.

I remember there was a zoner who always gave me shit about being a registered republican, not understanding how shit works in Utah. I think he was from a state that is more like the real world.

Ever think you see Mike Lee pictured with a guy with a stealie mask that said "Make America Grateful Again?" Thinking that may be a first.  Too bad I didn't have my "Humans Against Mike Lee" shirt on.

Keep up the good work Slick!
