Surprised this has gone without mention here. Listening in, it's honestly the most interesting music I've heard from Phish in 20 years... some of the interplay and spaces explored gave me a reminder of what drew me to Phish back in the very early 90s, I first saw them in 1990 and enjoyed many shows before becoming very discouraged by many factors and hopping off in 98. Have tried jumping back in a few times and really enjoyed the TAB shows I've seen but it's been hard to reconnect. The music the last couple nights with Billy have been absolutely fantastic tho imho.... but I'm far from a fan so who knows, maybe it was just me

I thought it was all fair.
I thought it was all very good but nothing mind bending or exceptional. Still wish I had been there.
Ironic that he's afraid of the dead tit but now embracing the phish tit.

Ill agree with that if he
Ill agree with that if he plays it in his set , which is what I think he was referring to

Nice statement. Bill is as
Nice statement. Bill is as humble as he is talented.
Going to watch the streams tonight. And then going up to the Gorge tomorrow to see Billy and his boys at Willie's Outlaw fest this weekend.

Billy plays Back on the Train somewhat regularly, including this awesome version when Trey sat in a couple of years ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9nPyStBHDk

Ken... I'll be up there at the Gorge show this weekend. Wanted to see one of these shows and have not been to the Gorge yet. Billy, Bob and Willie sounded like a good time. I always enjoy all three.

I've never been into Phish so
I've never been into Phish so I don't know, but I did watch the video clips with Billy and really enjoyed what I was hearing. Admittedly it didn't make me seek out a Phish only full show video but I do think now I'd have fun if I went to a performance. As the OP post indicates he's a huge Phish fan, he met his bass player and sound engineer at a Phish show. He's gobsmacked he got to play with them, I don't think he's doing a pass the torch sort of thing.
As far as Billy avoiding the GD, he was heavily covering a lot of GD songs for a spell before his own catalog could support no repeats. He's since turned out new material he wanted to showcase and on top of that I believe he wanted to avoid being another dead cover band, as he said there's enough cover bands suckling that teat already. There was a lot of talk at the time of replacing Mayer with Strings on fan sites and I don't think he has any interest in that and was uncomfortable being in a position he didn't ask for. I don't think he wanted to be the next Jerry guy, which is completely reasonable. He's not sworn off playing with various GD members as a sit in, and I wouldn't rule out Billy and the Kids but I understand cutting off the covers. The covers did pique my interest in Strings' band initially but other than nostalgia they weren't really a musical highlight compared to the bluegrass covers and originals. Others might feel differently, that's solely JMO.

I do like how he trims it
I do like how he trims it closely with things like Shady Grove/Bonny Swans/Rocking Chair etc so as to still scratch the itch tho

Yeah, you always got a GD
Yeah, you always got a GD tune or two at a Billy show and understand why he stopped doing them - at least for now. But yes, he had been teasing a bit and once he busts out a sick St. Stephen, people will be freaking out, taking off their clothes, etc.

I love he's not allergic to
I love he's not allergic to anything Jerry, or Bobby for that matter, ever touched. Shady Grove is a great example, so is Dark Hollow.
He didn't say he'd never cover GD again, so I expect when the dust settles and he's solidly the master of his own domain GD will gain honorable bust out status, just probably not regular rotation any time soon.
