Billy Strings posted he's playing the guitar his granddad built in prison (and he more recently had souped up) tonight.

Behold:

33

218018081_363662808450248_5113148509289112952_n.jpg

I think Billy has a 33 tattoo on his arm. Must mean something special to him.

Billy's tats are only slightly better looking than Pete Davidson's. Not that it matters. Just don't tell me he's a MAGA moron, please.

Billy B Good!

I did and am looking forward to it......next best thing to being there!

I think Billy has a 33 tattoo on his arm. Must mean something special to him.

Rolling Rock beer?

From Reddit :

It's a big family number for him, he was born October 3 and his family just really loves the number three but the biggest reason is his grandpa's racing stock car number was 33.

218223858_363662818450247_5096735794642992344_n (1).jpg

Named after his grandfather's race car, the 33 guitar is over 50 years old.

https://www.phantasytour.com/bands/phish/threads/4653291/billy-strings-3...

Racing car number also. Damn, we should be detectives. LOL

Suggestions from that link -

1) It's been a lucky number in his family for a few generations. His grandpa's racing car, the prison guitar, and just in general he sees the number a lot when looking at his watch, etc.

2) Gotcha, I was wrong. Thought it was something about his grandfather, but did billy name that guitar or something?

As far as I know, yes, he added the 33 himself. I believe Scale Model Guitars traced the exact 33 from the picture of the race car to make the inlay.

Per Billy's post on Instagram, the guitar was made by his grandfather while in prison in the early 1960s.

33 in Rehearsal

Must mean something special to him

The tattoo is in honor of the guitar which is in honor of grandad's race car. Billy plays 33 now and then, but I think this is the 1st time he's played 33 at Red Rocks. It is not a maga tattoo. lmao

I was wondering BK had access to Jerry's guitars for these shows, but perhaps that would be an invitation for the drama fans to turn up like they did for RA and overshadow the music.

I thought it was the 33 associated with the antifascist group Iron Front when I first saw it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Front

1933 was the year Hitler banned trade unions.

Now I wonder how that guitar plays. Prison built!

I thought maybe Grampa got 33 years.

Some nutjob was going bonkers comparing the Hitler 1933 thing to Billy's 33 on one of the pandemic FANS live streams his band did. Some people really want the guy to take sides now that he's got a grammy...when he seems to really just want to make music, smoke pot and fish in his free time. If you can't figure out that he's not into the nazis, you're probably not listening to his music. Don't think he's writing any "antifa" anthems either, for that matter.

Nice shot, Noods!

Many great shots of rehearsals on FB last 2 days...

So the paid stream is not working for anyone?

It's working fine here.

YouTube link is fine.  Why did I pay for this?

The youtube link is a sneak peak. It's only the first 15-20 minutes of the set maybe.

Think I just saw old zoner Althea? Anyone else?

33 has all kinds of special meanings to various disciplines. Its an occult master number, its the age Christ died, its the highest degree you can reach in Scottish Rite Freemasonry, it's the key to opening the third eye, Mt, Meru reported to be 33 miles in circumference by Mercator, the UN Flag is split into 33 sections, 33 symbolizes the highest spiritual conscious attainable by the human being and Disneyland has Club 33 (only place that serves alcohol there).

So 33 was heavy twangy, glad he ditched it, nice story though.

Roughly an hour and 15 minute first set...

Guitar tones a bit muddy in the lower midrange department, otherwise i'm lovin' it!

I love that there's a bona fide dishwasher in this band.

I heard Your Time is Gonna Come tease, the MTB tease, and could almost smell Dear Prudence, but no

I thought I heard some Spanish Jamish stuff going on near the start of that big jam too. Great stuff.

I like tonight's poster a lot! More than most.

I wish I had listened tonight. Are they playing tomorrow, as well?

>>>Billy needs to take these guys on a full tour.

You're goddamn right Bob. Unfortunately young Billy has a pretty balls-to-the-wall tour coming up. Maybe next year.

That Other One coming out of Bird Song was fantastic. And Billy sang the shit out of So Many Roads. Great show and looking forward to tomorrow.

Great show, glad they got the EQing fixed during the set break!  But damn, two long sets of rock and roll GD music, er, heart felt sensitive GD music, er, spacey trippy GD music...

Guess it had it all!!!  Fun band, great arrangements (did someone mention tempos?)

My only complaint, well, observation, is that the two former members of the band who are bringing it full throttle right now (Billy and Phil), won't(?) play together...   (Maybe if we get Jimmy Carter and Henry Kissenger together with them?).  No disrespect to Bobby, loving his arrangements with the more orchestral versions and elevator tempos, but sometimes something more pelvic is in order, lol

Terrific show. Exquisite set list.

When members of the Grateful Dead perform with appropriately talented musicians the results stand for itself .
Dear Phil, I hope you are watching

Careful, the country club membership is pretty sensitive to these comments and will tell you you're mistaken.

Nikola Tesla....Tesla, 1857-1943, gave the world alternating current electricity. The electrical industry today is driven largely by the discoveries and inventions of Tesla. The present systems of alternating current generation, power transmission, three-phase motors, radio and remote control are all thanks to Tesla

Tesla lived on the 33rd floor of The New York Hotel for ten years. Tesla had a fascination with the number three and
chose this floor because of the double three. Whether it was garments, tableware, or food items, the
quantity of anything he used had to be divisible by three.

Tesla’s actual room number was 3327. This number represents the 33rd floor of the hotel and the 27th
room on the floor. Not only is the number 27 divisible by three it is also 3³. 3 x 3 x 3 = 27!

It's reported that Tesla started showing symptoms of OCD around 1917 when he became obsessed with the number three. When taking his daily swim at the public pool, he always swam 33 laps, but if he lost count he said he couldn't leave, and instead had to start over from zero.

^yep. "If you only knew the magnificence of the 3, 6 and 9, then you would have a key to the universe."– Nikola Tesla

I'm not questioning Tesla's brilliance, but I do think it has to be balanced against his fondness for feathered friends.

Tesla never married, but he admitted to falling in love with a very special white pigeon that visited him regularly. He reportedly said, “I loved that pigeon as a man loves a woman, and she loved me. As long as I had her, there was a purpose to my life.”

https://www.britannica.com/story/nikola-teslas-weird-obsession-with-pigeons

I think they key here is BK assembled a band of musicians instead of a collection of Grateful Dead impersonators. I notice with this band no one is attempting to imitate, they're all doing the best they can using their own talent which is ample. I sensed a little bit of BK directing in there, but not conducting or micro managing so the band members aren't cowed into a musical corner where the jams sound like they're in jail.

James "super calves" Casey is the MVP from last night. Billy Strings took on a big song in Positively 4th Street...brave! I loved all of it, but So Many Roads was especially nice and I enjoyed the drums portion of the evening - maybe the brevity kept it special? Love the bass playing Ginger Man Reed Mathis :) He looked like he was having a blast! I'm warming up to Hamilton's voice, there's nothing wrong with it, IDK why it bugs me. I think all but TH would benefit from a vocal coach but at the same time they're all better singers than Phil so..lol

Looking forward to tonights show!

Been a long time since I have seen such an impressive "dead" show  There is life after dead!!

It was nice of David Tennant to run the camera last night. Just Kidding He did a good job!

Also good to see Nipple Guy made it into the show. His story is pretty inspiring. He lost a nipple at Deer Creek 95, but he still shows up. Brave

I was blown away by the freeviews I saw, Looks like a fun time was had by all in attendance.

Another good one from Billy and the Kids. Billy Strings really elevates the band IMO.

I really enjoyed last nights show.  The band achieved liftoff early and were obviously rehearsed.  I have a new contender for best saxophone jam in Eyes, (competing with Branford Marsalis).  Can't wait to do it all over again tonight!

LLTD, nice first visit cool

 >>>appropriately talented musicians<<<

At the risk of being dismissed as nothing but a "country club member" (i.e. someone who actually knows what goes on at the country club because I've actually been there through it all) I'll point out that by common definition Reed Mathis is a straight up TxR "dishwasher". A guy who plays in the bar there all the time, as well as many other little bars & cafe's in the region.

He's just a Bay Area local musician.

And he's appropriately talented.

Overall, it's cool to see so many here enjoying some GD music again.

Carry on.

Mathis may play Bay Area gigs recently , but for 15 years he was part of the nationally touring, Tulsa based Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey. He's toured with the Steve Kimock Band, was a founding member of the Benevento Trio and was a member of Tea Leaf Green. I don't think you understand the throwaway comment dig at Phil's lineups that include TXR "dishwashers". No one includes him in that category.

I respectfully disagree with the dishwasher idea, not exactly the same resume as members of the family band....

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reed_Mathis

<<Mathis' unique style and tone has been described as "talking bass." In a feature article in Bass Player in September, 2002, noted music author Bill Milkowski writes:

"No other electric bass player around today has been as successful (as Mathis) at incorporating mind-blowing and mondo-effects into a personal voice on the instrument. The charismatic Mathis is freed up to soar into the high register and wail with impunity on his heavy effected bass guitar because Haas is holding down the basslines on the Rhodes."[1]

In 1994, Mathis met Brian Haas and a group of like-minded Tulsa musicians, who together created the Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey (JFJO). Originally an octet, the band toured six years before becoming the piano-bass-drums trio for which it is known. Mathis continued to tour and record with JFJO through 2008.

In 2005–2006, Mathis toured with the Steve Kimock Band, which featured Steve Kimock on guitar and lap steel guitar, Robert Walter on Hammond B3 organ and Rhodes piano, and Rodney Holmes on drums.

In 2006, Mathis united with pianist Marco Benevento and drummers Matt Chamberlain and Andrew Barr to form the Marco Benevento Trio. He has appeared on three releases with the Marco Benevento Trio and continues to tour with the group. The trio appeared at New York City's famed Carnegie Hall in June, 2009.

In late 2007, Mathis joined the San Francisco rock band Tea Leaf Green (TLG). In 2008, he split time between TLG and JFJO. He appears on the Tea Leaf Green's 2008 release Raise Up The Tent and tours as a member of the band.

In 2008, Mathis produced Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey's "Winterwood" (named for Winterwood Studios in Eureka Springs, Arkansas). Shortly before the album's release in January, 2009, Mathis announced his departure from JFJO, citing a desire to pursue his other musical endeavors. Chris Combs (guitar) and Matt Hayes (upright bass) joined Haas (piano) and Josh Raymer (drums) to form the new JFJO lineup.

In 2009 Mathis became an original member of 7 Walkers, a band led by Grateful Dead drummer Bill Kreutzmann. He recorded on their self-titled debut album that was released on November 2, 2010. He left the band in 2010 due to touring commitments with Tea Leaf Green and was replaced by George Porter Jr..

Mathis performed with the Rhythm Devils for their 2011 tour, and with Mickey Hart Band in 2012.  In 2014 Billy Kreutzmann formed Billy & The Kids, a new band featuring Mathis alongside Tom Hamilton, and Aron Magner.  Also in 2014, The Golden Gate Wingmen was formed by John Kadlecik, featuring Mathis alongside Jeff Chimenti and Jay Lane. He officially parted ways with Tea Leaf Green in 2016.

In 2016, Mathis released his first album under his own name, "Beathoven" - a collection of trios Mathis assembled to improvise over the various movements from Beethoven's 3rd Symphony "Eroica" and Beethoven's 6th Symphony "Pastoral."  Among the featured improvisors on are Page McConnell, Mike Gordon, Joe Russo, Marco Benevento, Matt Chamberlain, Stanton Moore, Robert Walter, The Barr Brothers, Mike Dillon, Jason Smart, Jared Tyler, Steve Pryor and Luke Bulla.

To tour in support of the album Mathis assembled the band that came to be called "Electric Beethoven," which featured Jay Lane, Tulsa guitarist Clay Welch, Todd Stoops, and Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey's Josh Raymer.  They recorded the live album "Maps We Found In The Ground" in 2017, and in 2018 they signed with Color Red Records, a boutique record label based in Denver Colorado.

Color Red released 5 singles from Electric Beethoven in 2019.

In 2021, Mathis announced plans to release six new Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey albums, plus a documentary about the making of the albums and the history of the band.

In May 2021, Billy & The Kids performed three shows on the island of Kauai with special guests Billy Strings, James Casey, and Carlos Santana.

Mathis' second solo album "The Ladder" was released in June 2021, and features Mathis on lead vocals and writing all the lyrics & music, a first in his career.
