Forums:

So instead of taking the cheap(under $200 round trip) flight to John Wayne INTL. Airport

to visit SoCal

it was decided getting on a plane now was not in our best interest but thank you for all the suggestions

SO

Now it looks like we're driving to Bluff Utah for a visit.

It would be silly of me not to ask the Zone for travel advice to that area

Thanks in advance!

Stayed in Bluff once. There's a Navajo steakhouse (or was).  Monument Valley /Mexican Hat less than an hour away. Very laid back, as you would expect.

I recognize that spot... middle of nowhere!

Monument Valley. We traveled up from Phoenix to Moab one summer for a river trip. Had to drive my VW bus overnight through the hot desert, but we caught a Monument Valley sunrise.  Sa-weeeet.

Here's the northern lights a few years ago.

Monument Valley Aurora.jpg

Not sure how much time your spending, but the Needles District of Canyonlands NP is sublime ... far less people than closer to Moab.

the list so far:

Goosenecks

Mexican Hat

Moki Dugway

Natural Bridges

Valley of the Gods

then maybe swing up to Ticaboo

and drive the Noton-Bullfrog road( https://www.theamericansouthwest.com/notom-bullfrog-road

through Capitol Reef National Park

Goblin State Park

That's lotsa miles. Back in the mid 80's I produced an hour-long story for radio about Burr Trail and paving it. Quite controversial at the time.

If you drive the Burr Trail into Boulder, plan for a stop at the Hell's Backbone Grill. It's right on the first turn getting off the trail. Near the Anasazi museum, too. Never been myself (yet) but it's supposed to be one of the best restaurant's in the state. You may need a reservation. It is quite pricey, and if you want something more economical, the cafe/restaurant next door to it is supposed to be pretty good. .

Just got on the HBG website https://www.hellsbackbonegrill.com/ and it looks like they're closed till Match 13th. Don't know your travel dates.

If you go through Torrey, look for the Capitol Burger food truck by the Chuck Wagon General Store. They're on FB. Best burgers in the world. Tell Adam "Hey." My fav is the pulled pork with jalapenos and cream cheese. My buddy has a place in Teasdale and I go there frequently. The mexican place Chak Balom in Torrey is good, too. I thought the Hunt and Gather was overpriced. The Rim Rock east oof town has a restaurant and a Bar-B-Que place.

They just finished improvements on the road into Capitol Reef and I enjoy driving to the Capitol Gorge and hiking a bit. All depends on the time you have. But just driving the paved road in Capitol Reef is amazing.  Download some Native American flute music like "Carry The Gift" from R. Carlos Nakai and William Eaton and get transported. GREAT album.

great stuff Slickrock!!

We have four days to kill, leaving for Bluff this Sunday so the weather will be perfect for this time of year

Goblin State Park<<<

Be sure to check out Little Wildhorse Canyon if you like slot canyons.

Just watch the weather. Rain clouds far far away dump into that. A family got caught on Mother's Day a few years ago and their two children drowned. Horrible. But it's cool. I hiked it as a loop hike.

weather might change plans for heading north from Bluff too much

anyone ever been to Canyon de Chelly

Shiprock

or other parts not too far south of Bluff?

sound advice about flash flood, even when the sky above appears blue ... you never know what's going on upstream!

I've never completed the loop, but made it through about 1/3 of the way and backtracked.

br:  I've only passed through Shiprock and haven't been to Canyon de Chelly, but have wanted to visit.

I'm not sure the weather will be all that different further south, I think elevation might be a bigger factor ... at least in regard to temps.

We decided on Moab

$200+ rooms are going for under $100

peak off season so it's not crowded

drove the Shafer Trail today

when we got to the top we wanted to drive the

Island in the Sky but the winds picked up

so getting out of the car to enjoy the views was unpleasant

probably biking along the river tomorrow

stood on the point where Thelma and Louise drove of the cliff

Don't know if I caught you in time but, the boat launch at Hittle Bottom is a nice spot for a sunset. The rocks in Richardson's Amphitheater where Fisher Towers is light up.

Take the right turn into Castle Valley. Great views, and the La Sal Mtn Loop Road is a great drive that puts you south of Moab if you want to take a scenic route back to town. .

The Red Cliffs Lodge at mile 14 has a nice room with movie memorabilia from City Slickers, Thelma and Louis, and The Commancheros (filmed at that ranch.)

It's outrageously priced now, but we stayed a couple of times at reduced rates years ago. Right on the river.

When we moteled it, we stayed at The Rustic a block off the main drag. Quieter. and near food and drink.

Torrey Utah made the news this morning

not in a good way

hope your people are safe

If down that Notom-Bullfrog area, pop over the ridge and hike Upper Muley Twist Canyon, and eat a bunch of shrooms.....

'sup Slick!

That murderer is a clear example of the need for mandatory organ donation legislation

We hiked Fischer's Towers yesterday and folks weren't as friendly as usual passing on the trail
