The BMW Love Thread

Forums:

Recently I have read a number of posts denigrating all drivers of the fine motor cars of Bayerische Motoren Werke. The idea that BMW drivers are worse than drivers of other vehicles is faulty. There is a certain percentage of bad drivers in equal proportion to good drivers of all motor vehicle makes. And if an owner takes advantage of the stellar driving workshops that are available to ALL owners, chances are that those drivers are substantially BETTER than the vast majority of other drivers. Those free driving schools rock like few other things. My favorite was the winter driving class that I took in CO on a frozen lake. Trust me, once you learn to take a valuable vehicle into an ice turn at substantial speed while under complete control, you're driving skill go way up in ALL conditions. I'm not sure how many other manufacturers take the time to teach their owners how to drive better, but I consider that a major plus for BMW.

As for the 2014 BMW X1 K2 Special Edition that I drive, it is simply one the best cars I have owned. It is perky as hell, super sticky on the road and being a crossover SUV, is versatile as can be. Sure, if it was bigger it could carry more stuff but for my needs, it can carry as much as I throw at it, especially since it came with roof racks and a cargo box included in the price. I also got a pair of K2 skis, Marker bindings and a very nice rolling ski/snowboard bag. There are only two things that I dislike and those are minor issues. The economy start/stop at lights can be a tad jarring upon start up and it's ride is not as smooth as some would prefer. You feel the bumps in the road, but then again, it is engineered like a sports car and having a connection with the road is part of the deal.

So, Nedb, please compliment your wife as to her choice in car. And, if you feel that she could improve her driving, make her enroll in one of the free driving schools. Hell, enroll yourself too. You will not be disappointed.

I'm sure there are other BMW owners on this board. Don't feel threatened by those meanies who put us down. Stand tall and motor on.

>>You feel the bumps in the road

You connect with the road. The ultimate driving machine.

I never feel threatened by any idiots...ahem - "meanies" here, Tony. I love mine. Lots of fun to drive.

I'm in the market for a new car or a higher quality used car and I have a decent amount of money to spend.

For the higher quality used cars I've been focusing on Japanese brands and have been completely looking past the European cars (BMW, Audi, Mercedes) because what I have always heard is that their long-term reliability isn't in the same league as the Japanese cars, and that even basic maintenance & repairs cost a mint.

Are these reputations generally accurate?

aren't all deadheads smelly wooks?

Both of my Audis went well over 200,000 without any major problems. This is my first BMW.

I bought them all used with around 40-50,000 miles on them as they came off a lease. You don't get whacked heavy by depreciation that way.

Yes, fixing a BMW or Audi is pricier than a Toyota or Honda - but a Lexus or Infiniti is in the same league as the German imports for maintenance costs.

I am on the road often for my job - and I like to have a nice ride that treats my back well.

That and they are super fun to drive on the right road at the right time.

Curious, 6 - I remember you asking some questions about the X1 when I first got it. What model BMW did you go with?

Lance ~ if you can swing it, go with new. The warranties for a new BMW are all in (except tires) 4 year or 50,000 miles. I had to replace a tire because of a nasty pot hole. As for everything else, everything was covered. When I was purchasing the car, they asked me if I wanted some coffee. I did and in short order a black cup of coffee, just how I like it was brought to me. Flash forward to my first covered service and every service afterwards, I would pull up to the garage door, it would open, I would pull up to the check in desk and within moments I was greeted by name and a piping hot cup of black coffee was offered to me. Walking into the service area of a BMW dealer is amazing in itself. First of all it is as clean as a Michelin star restaurant and all the mechanics are in clean suits. Second, and this might not be the case at all dealers, the service bay area is a positive pressure room so no dust or contaminents can dirty your car repair. Pretty amazing if you ask me.

Because all the early services are done regularly and correctly, it should lower the cost of maintenance over  the life of the car.

Actually, Tony, I wanted to get another Audi. I prefer to drive a stick, though, and less and less people in the world want them - so finding an Audi with a manual transmission has become harder. Everywhere I turned I had to go the S route if I wanted a stick and those S's are pricey even used (for a good one - not a high mileage turn).

When I went to my guy he said he had just taken in a BMW and I should try it. I drove the 328 and I was smitten. Price was very sweet and I could no pass on it.

If you drive a BMW, you’re at least part asshole. In some cases, more so. Just a matter of gradient.

Everyone poops, Tatters.

audis pretty high on the list as well...

What brand of vehicle does an overly judgemental person drive?

That graph up there proves that at a minimum 24.2% of BMW drivers are horrible drivers.

Yup

I love Bob Marley and the Wailers (BMW).

I also had a 2011 R1200R that I bought new and sold in October for 60% of what I paid for it, they definitely keep their value.

>> overly judgemental person

Man, you try so hard. It's cute.

Lol. Is 'overly judgmental person' like a koan?

If you drive a BMW, you’re at least part asshole.

I'm fairly sure that if you are a living mammal, you're at least part asshole. Biology. No?

I am observational and this is a broad overgeneralization...you get that right?

Had a 2014 BMW X5 for about a year and a half. Bought it used with low kiles

Goddamn did I enjoy that machine. But like I’ve said before “a BMW

is like having a smoking hot high maintenance girlfriend. Expensive but

its worth it.

Ill keep my Volvo and just smile politley when everyone I work with puffs their chest about their new BMW.

Citroen hatchback. Base package.

That makes sense, but I was thinking maybe a bicycle or a modified veggie oil burning compact.

Every 18 year old student in our university town whose the child of an apparatchik in China drives a BMW.

I got a Mercedes.

I also tried out a used Mercedes when I bought the BMW. I think it was a C 300. It drove somewhat like a tank. Very safe, though.

Here in my area of NJ, I would say that BMWs are more numerous than any other brand of car. Plenty of times if 10 cars go by, 6 of them are BMWs. The #1 model, by far, is the X5.

6 - Is your 328 an X Drive?

Yessir. Has to be up here. You most likely already knew that.

yup, they are vanilla these days for sure, sorta the same thing that happened to Harley.

Still way more Subaru Foresters and Outbacks, Honda CRVs and Toyota Rav4s on the road up here in Vermont than BMW X1-5s, but that's up here.

thats cuz folks sensibly dont want to replace tires and rims every winter when their low-profiles hit the potholes and frost heaves. Here in the Finger Lakes folks arent that smart and just lineup at the shop each winter with their checkbooks out

But driving around potholes and frost heaves is part of the fun   lol

You are now on list.

I figured that was the case but didn't want to assume. I get in trouble that way. I previously drove a 325i rear drive and although it was a beast on dry pavement, it may have been the worst car ever in snow and that includes a Chrysler New Yorker with almost bald tires. If one wasn't fully engaged and have a good winter driving skills with the 325i, you would get stuck on a mild driveway incline.

My dad had one, we loved it.yes

Lance - Ive driven both Lexus and BMW - both are great cars, but Lexus gives you more bang for your buck, and seem to be more reliable, and repairs are a lot more reasonable,

I bought a 97 540i couple years ago- the car was a tank- very solid and great power with a monstrous 4.4 liter V-8. I sold it after a year and a half because  I didn't want to deal with maintenance issues, which are too expensive on BMW.

A BMW thread on Viva seems like the proper progression before a grateful dead message board dies. I've seen it before.

>>>The idea that BMW drivers are worse than drivers of other vehicles is faulty

Never heard a thing about them being bad drivers.....although I have read articles on them being douchier than thou.

As a side note, I had an 8 yr old make of my car yesterday (not a bmw).

You mean I'm the harbinger of death?

TOTALLY BADASS!!!
