The last time I saw Bobstar he was weeble-wobbling and falling down on the Cap stage floor. I assumed that was the last time I'd attend a concert with Bob Weir on the bill but here we are.
Although I'm a Bobby fluffer, I'm also a realist. I had pretty low expectations for last night and was very pleasantly surprised. The show was upbeat and up-tempo, and damn, that Wolf Pack can play. Setlists are subjective, and I really liked last night's. It was great to get an Esau, as well as the Odessa. Set II was stellar. The Bombs Away made me smile, and there was one fiddle jam in Franklins that was sick. The full Terrapin Cycle was a treat. Just a fun show.
again, stoked for barry. getting to hang with willie and meet and play with other outlaw types...hope it leads to better gigs. there's not a ton of pedal guys running around and hopefully after getting some exposure he can get some other cool opportunitites.
I'm listening to the show and it holds up on tape.
One thing you can say about Bobby, like it or not, is that he does something very different with a lot of the songs than just rehashing ther GD sound. I felt the same way about RatDog.
The hurrry up Shatner phrasing and dragging tempos seem to be pretty well absent the last couple years and I really enjoy the textures that this band weaves, weirs tone seems to be a lot less grating also, more in line with his GD era tones vs the harsh brittle of a few years ago. At first I thought it was the volume but he is still up in the mix but it blends a lot better nowadays.
Yea the sparse Willie band is nice, his son was sick recently and Sister passed away so not sure he uses keys at all anymore...didn't last year either...reminds me of the sparse arrangements on alot of his greatest work. He is a master of open spaces
I saw Wolf Pack last night, 9/26 at Mershon Auditorium in Columbus, OH. GD played there on 9/30/76 and Bobby started the show by saying he vaguely remembered standing on the stage and at that time there were only a few hundred people in there, which surprises me for '76, but could be true. The acoustics were great, Come Together was strong and the horns added a bit of Eleanor Rigby in the jam, nice touch. Birdsong had a beautiful flute jam, sounds of a bird, and GDTRFB had a fun discordant jam, everyone play crazy for a few seconds. Bobby playing all those complicated chords is impressive, Barry is so tasteful and plays beautifully, and I love how Bobby's always barefoot or in berks.

To my knowledge Bob Weir and/or any of the band incarnations he's played in for 50+ years have NEVER done a NYE show outside of the Bay Area, CA.
Odd choice to me still. Very.
thank you.

Between DeadCo and Wolf Bros Bobby has played about 65 shows this year, most over 3 hours. Not too shabby for an old guy.
