<< Captain Sully — a lifelong Republican — just penned an op-ed encouraging everyone to vote against the GOP in order to save our democracy and restore civility:

“For the first 85 percent of my adult life, I was a registered Republican. But I have always voted as an American. And this critical Election Day, I will do so by voting for leaders committed to rebuilding our common values and not pandering to our basest impulses.”

Captain Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger in the Washington Post:

"I am often told how calm I sounded speaking to passengers, crew and air traffic control during the emergency. In every situation, but especially challenging ones, a leader sets the tone and must create an environment in which all can do their best. You get what you project. Whether it is calm and confidence — or fear, anger and hatred — people will respond in kind. Courage can be contagious.

"Today, tragically, too many people in power are projecting the worst. Many are cowardly, complicit enablers, acting against the interests of the United States, our allies and democracy; encouraging extremists at home and emboldening our adversaries abroad; and threatening the livability of our planet. Many do not respect the offices they hold; they lack — or disregard — a basic knowledge of history, science and leadership; and they act impulsively, worsening a toxic political environment.
* * *

"We cannot wait for someone to save us. We must do it ourselves. This Election Day is a crucial opportunity to again demonstrate the best in each of us by doing our duty and voting for leaders who are committed to the values that will unite and protect us. Years from now, when our grandchildren learn about this critical time in our nation’s history, they may ask if we got involved, if we made our voices heard. I know what my answer will be. I hope yours will be 'yes.'"

Bryen, does Trump bragging about assaulting women and his lust for his own daughter excite you?

How about sending the Army to the border to shoot brown kids in the face—is that what gets you hot?

You guys are sick, literally.  I hope the best for each and every one of you...but you're sick.

If you subscribe to the notion most things happen for a reason, that on occasion you are tested, that there's nowhere you can be that isn't where you're meant to be, maybe my disillusion with certain characters is the universe trying to tell me something, like anyone can wear a tie dye, anyone can claim to be a part of this scene, the Philzone...what is the Philzone?  What is Grateful Dead Family?  I can guarantee you I've spent more of my life doing whatever I could to improve this scene than most, it's discouraging to see it's current state if some of the people on this message board are any metric.  In the same breath I'd say there are many here that I think highly of, maybe that's just how life is...I realize these are difficult times to discuss religion or politics.  I do believe it can happen respectfully, but maybe that's an old fashioned mindset.  There's still a place for etiquette and common decency, it's the structure that allows intelligent discourse, without discussion there is no advancement of thoughts or ideas.  Undoubtedly I'll get a barrage of negativity, I suppose I should embrace it, but for the sake of all that's good in this world, how about doing so with a base level of etiquette?  That would be refreshing, in the meantime I will strive to be the change I wish to see in others.

I wish our president felt that way, and more importantly, acted that way, with etiquette and common decency

I admire Bryen's ability to keep it civil and respectful- that says a lot about the guy.

Agreed, Bryen has always been respectful with me during our debates...

Sure, Brayin' is always respectful as he spews lies and misinformation in an attempt  to defend the racist POS he supports.

Funny, I asked the dude a stupid and very non-personal question, and he responded with a slew of personal attacks. He did not, however, respond to any of my posts directly related to policy.

A pseudo-intellectual and veiled slam is still a slam. I’ve seen it from the guy from the time he got here. He’s never been truly civil. In my mind he can no longer claim higher ground when he’s the one calling names, and over what, a silly question?

Alas, Poor Bryen, we hardly knew ye...

"...Alas Poor Yorick” Monologue in modern English...

Hamlet is in a graveyard, where some gravediggers are digging Ophelia’s grave. He has found what he takes to be the skull of a court jester, Yorick, who had befriended him as a child. Here, again, Hamlet is reflecting heavily on life and death. His friend, Horatio, is with him and he’s talking to him.

Alas, poor Yorick, I actually knew him, Horatio. He was brimming with jokes and he was wonderfully creative. He carried me on his back a thousand times, and now, when I think about it it’s horrible, it makes me angry. Here were the lips that I kissed I don’t know how many times. Where are your barbed jokes now? Your high-jinx? Your songs?

Your moments of jesting that used to set all those at the table roaring with laughter? Not one left to mock that grin you have. Sad? Now go to my lady’s room and tell her to plaster herself with makeup because she has to come to this function. Make her laugh at that...."

It's his only partially veiled air of superiority that's annoying. Especially when his information is so obviously one-sided..

As it always is.

What change would that be?

And inaccurate

At the end of the day, white nationalists, Nazis and the KKK supports Trump. Why? They agree with his politics.

One can be as intellectual and “civil” as they want, but they are still supporting the platforms that racists and hate groups love. Trump is a disgusting dirtbag, all on his own, without Hillary or Obama. I have no problem calling Trump supporters what they are. Sorry, you can’t support a racist, repressive president and then claim that you’re not that.

What if I were to say that all politicians are absolute Filth ?

Maybe it's OK if we have a few County Alder-persons or even Mayors.
Maybe not.  They all slurp up money at gunpoint and make legislation to slurp up even more money.

I agree with filling Potholes and even maintaining Public Schools,  although my taxes need not go toward schools if I've no kids there.

I'm totally in favor of maintaining our Beautiful National Park System,  and paying the Park Rangers to keep a watchful eye, preventing vandalism.

But every politician sees the Public Land as a place to loot  & burn,  selling Timber,  Minerals and Petrol to foreign interests.

They babble and moan at each election cycle,  getting the taxpayers all excited over nothing,  and then raise taxes,  steal more Loot,  and pass laws making various facets of Life illegal or mandatory.

Politicians are a Curse upon the working class.

Unfortunate as it may seem,  I am stuck in the working class for the rest of my life.

Politicians have never helped in any way,  shape or form,  but get tons of attention and money for fucking over the taxpayers.

Oh and T.Od. what cute little candies you have.  I bet that must be a big hit at Family Gatherings.

"What cute little Penoid Candies T.O.D. brought !!  Share with the whole Family !!"

i'm cool with bryen.

and yes, people that disagree need to be able to hold a conversation.

Settle down dog boy.

Go split some wood, you'll feel much better I'm sure.

I realize these are difficult times to discuss religion or politics<<<

If it were only about "politics"; unless, a backslide into an authoritarian oligarchy is deemed to be "political"?

I deem "it" to be nothing short of CRIMINAL in light of any notion of the self evident truths our nation was founded upon.

While certainly a virtue, civility is may have to be temporarily discarded in the days to come; was Grant "civil" to Lee?

And Turtle’s horrible, historic fall from grace continues unabated...

Turtle remains a beloved member of the zoner community, 6ravy.

Sadly, I can't say the same for you & your pals over on the garbage zone.

I’d beg to differ if I thought your opinion mattered but I don’t so here we are. Now what?

How about you post to Bryen instead?

>>>>was Grant "civil" to Lee?

While Grant was a hard-nosed son of bitch on the battlefield, he was very gracious and civil when it came time for Lee to surrender.   That civility, respect, and graciousness in the treatment of the former rivals was key to the reunification of the nation.

Stop mentioning me g-stain. I have not addressed you.

Creep.

Why is gravystain so bitchy today?  Are you viva's self-appointed hall monitor?

Graivy is running out of friends on viva. He lost me after his narc thread a month ago.

adios, loser.

>>>>was Grant "civil" to Lee?

While Grant was a hard-nosed son of bitch on the battlefield, he was very gracious and civil when it came time for Lee to surrender.   That civility, respect, and graciousness in the treatment of the former rivals was key to the reunification of the nation.<<<

You're absolutely right.   After the war ended and in everyday life Grant was apparently very unassuming, fair minded, and civil.  I was referring to battlefield in particular; and perhaps how it contrasted to how he carried himself otherwise.

What I was trying to get at:  I believe we're on the cusp (if not there already) of having to discard a reliance upon engaging ideological political arguments period; let alone with civil nicety.   It's almost like any given issue is a distraction from the massive corruption - if not outright criminal component - at the core of Trump's presidency.   Make no mistake, this is not an argument to be won; it is a war.  It's almost like there's a world of words; and then, there's a world of how "reality unfolds" and power is transferred, retained, etc.   When truth has been thrown out the window, how can a war of words be "won" anyhow?

>>>>When truth has been thrown out the window, how can a war of words be "won" anyhow?

62,984,828 people voted for Trump in the 2016 general election.   Many of these people are surely the ugly racists and whack jobs you see at the rallies.  You will never be able to talk reason or otherwise "win" a debate with those folks.  But some of those 62 million, "I assume, are good people."   I personally know people who voted for Trump who are kind, intelligent, and decent.   Its those people who might be moved by reason not to repeat the same mistake in 2020.

Heard this Ted Talk about having better political debates by identifying the core values of the "other" and directing the conversation towards those core values:

https://www.ted.com/talks/robb_willer_how_to_have_better_political_conve...

And back to Grant and Lee - when they were finalizing the surrender details at Appomattox, Lee learned that Grant's adjutant, Ely S. Parker, was from the Seneca tribe, which prompted Lee to remark "It is good to have one real American here." Parker replied, "Sir, we are all Americans."

The dark forces of divisiveness in this country are strong but the common ties we share with (most) of our political rivals are even stronger.

 >But some of those 62 million, "I assume, are good people."   I personally know people who voted for Trump who are kind, intelligent, and decent<

Kind and decent people do not vote for an overt racist.

But some of those 62 million, "I assume, are good people."   I personally know people who voted for Trump who are kind, intelligent, and decent.   Its those people who might be moved by reason not to repeat the same mistake in 2020<<<

I agree with your general approach; and likewise, try to listen and engage in thoughtful debate where possible ... each and every vote counts, and even one "conversion" may go a long way.

However, among those 62 million, I suspect the vast majority are not ugly racists and whack jobs, but are mostly just stubborn with deaf ears to words; and to them, this is nothing short of war.   They've been conditioned to look upon at as such by a giant megaphone (funded by special interests) that is always "on" and turned up to 11.

I'm certainly not looking to make matters worse by stirring the pot unnecessarily, but I can't help but wonder if it's necessary to let those with deaf ears know that unless they start to listen, many of us will be compelled to engage in something along the lines of total economic warfare to deprive the Trump movement the "oxygen" it requires to survive ... call it a form of "fair warning" that many creatures exhibit who don't really want a fight.   However, I'm not oblivious to the distinct possibility that even said warnings will go in one ear and out the other (at best), and perhaps even incite greater entrenchment.  It's an awful spot for our country to be in, but I retain some hope the election will at least provide the acquisition of at least some oversight power if the GOP majority can be toppled in at least one of the chambers .

Here's what almost all of you do not get...this movement we all are a part of or we would never be on this message board in the first place, is basically the front line of the revolution of consciousness, there was a thread a few days ago in regards to Kesey's speech at the Oakland Coliseum on the occasion of Bill Graham's passing, I'm perhaps paraphrasing but it was something along the lines of "we are few", we are the song that the morning brings and to whom much is given much is expected, the reason LSD was gifted to humanity through divine intervention was to provide an anecdote to nuclear annihilation, which was a very real scenario not that long ago...it still is.

Hillary Clinton was an extension of the neoconservative foreign policy that started with Bush/Cheney, if there was a political figure that had the very real potential to bring about the end of civilization it was her.

     People don't get that.

What's there to "get"?  Hillary is not POTUS.

^Brayin' is just rationalizing his racism

From that post Bryen doesn't get a lot of things.

.>>>>>this movement we all are a part of or we would never be on this message board in the first place,

I think you'll find that's not the case. Most folks here would deny they are part of a "movement".

>>>>>if there was a political figure that had the very real potential to bring about the end of civilization it was her

Putin has stolen your brain..

LSD was brought about by divine intervention and Hillary would have ended civilization. Got it.

Bucky is that you??

Great idea.  Let's see if we can get it to show up in search suggestions by the time you type the "M".

It's odd how every "Bryen" post starts on the second line with an indent--maybe it's a sign of his Russian troll farm roots. It's abnormal for sure.

It's just style.  That is all.

     New York City Dave,

     I just now got it...funny!

My favorite Little Feet story is getting backstage in Colorado Springs 1991[?], they somehow had the same tour bus with the picture of the California sunset decorating the side that the Grateful Dead had on Summer Tour earlier that year, anyways...long story short, I end up drinking beer on the same bus the Grateful Dead used a few months prior.

Little Feet and their personnel couldn't have been nicer, it was interesting...I definitely got a gauge on how it may have been stylin' up the street in one of these mansions :)

[Verse 1]
We're playing those mind games together
Pushing the barrier, planting seed
Playing the mind guerilla
Chanting the mantra, "peace on Earth"
We all be playing those mind games forever
Some kind of Druid dude, lifting the veil
Doing the mind guerilla
Some call it magic, the search for the grail

[Chorus]
Love is the answer
And you know that, for sure
Love is the flower
You gotta let it, gotta let it grow

[Verse 2]
So keep on playing those mind games together
Faith in the future, out of the now
You just can't beat on those mind guerillas
Absolute elsewhere, in the stones of your mind

[Bridge]
Yeah, we're playing those mind games forever Projecting our images in space and in time

[Chorus]
Yes is the answer And you know that for sure Yes is surrender You gotta let it, you gotta let it go

[Verse 3]
So keep on playing those mind games together
Doing the ritual, dancing the sun
Millions of mind guerillas
Putting their soul power to the karmic wheel

[Bridge]
Keep on playing those mind games forever
Raising the spirit of peace and love
Love!

[Outro]
I want you to make love, not war
I know you've heard it before
