Burning Man?

Forums:

Anyone going this year? I'm thinking of going next year for my 60th, I have never been.

If you have gone, what did you think? Would you go again?

It's happening this year August 27th to September 4th.

Lots of dust. Unbearable heat. Loud shitty music everywhere ya go.

What's not to love?

I've been about 8 times between 99 and 08 hard to know for sure as they tend to blend together. I still have friends that go -  some who go every year and haven't missed one since the early 2000's. The biggest difference from when I went is that it has doubled in size in both area and people. So for instance the city is laid out as a giant U when I went the furthest distance from one side of the U to the other was a mile and now it is 2 miles. That is a huge difference in the ability to navigate the city. It's 100,000 people now and the area is vast. If I went I would have an electric bike and a way to charge it.

It is the biggest craziest 24 hour a day - one week party on earth thrown on the most inhospitable stretch of land you can find which just adds to the surreal nature of the whole thing. If you don't prepare you will not have a good time and since the party mostly happens at night that means above all being able to catch some sleep during the day when it can hit 100 degrees, but it's at 5000 feet so it can also get very cold at night so you have to be prepared for both.

What you are camping on is what they mine down the road to make dry wall and with all those people out there it turns into a 6 inch layer of dry wall dust. Combine that with the probability of 40 to 60 mile an hour winds and you get an idea of what the dust storms out there are like. There is no escaping the dust.

It isn't a festival and it isn't a concert. Think of it as a competition between 100,000 people to see who can build the coolest thing to attract a crowd. The budget for our camp in 2000 was $10,000 to bring out a full sound system, decks, a fully built out public dome with couches rugs and fountains, some black lights and a 50 foot projection screen 20 feet in the air. That budget today would be laughed at. There are full blown out door clubs out there now with lighting and sound systems that rival most clubs in big cities by 2004 I was loosely affiliated with a camp that had a full circus trapeze set up next to the dance floor with Cirque level people doing what they do.

The music is predominantly electronica and the sound systems are bigger and they are on mobile art cars so if you can't take a week of electronica it probably isn't for you, but I did find a dead music camp one year as well as funk as well as a person playing piano at sunrise while her friend sang opera. If you poke around you will find what you are looking for because it is 10,000 parties at once. It is everything from kids camp to Jiffy Lube the gay mens sex club camp to a hand cranked roller coaster run by wasted people.

If you can afford it an RV is the way to go and you can sign up to have it pumped now. The porta potties are well maintained now not like they were in the early days and are mostly fine and plentiful. Police is out there even undercover so be aware and the res you have to drive through to get there has been picking people off on the way in for a few years now. Be sober driving in and out and always go 5 miles under the speed limit until you hit 80. It's a 2 lane road and only one way out so the traffic jams getting in and out now are epic.

I wouldn't go again unless I came into unlimited time and money but I think everyone should go once. If you have more specific questions let me know.

Good post.

Yeah. I couldn't take an hour of that electronica crap.  I know many folks have a great time and can't wait till the next one. Just not for me.

I've never been, but I did have a gig one year driving RV's down to Reno that were rented out for Burning Man.  The trips down were fun!  Driving those filthy dust blasted RV's home was toxic.  Always thick layers of white talcum powder like dust on EVERYTHING.   Otherwise, always cool to see 60 something nerds with purple hair / beards...   and at the airport, the flights coming down from Portland were full of manbuns (I almost wrote a song about it, instead, wrote a song "I'm driving down to Reno in the Morning").

It's the biggest RV rental event in the country now. Bigger than the Daytona 500. When I went it was about $3,000 for the week and you had to not tell them where you were going which meant days of cleaning the thing. Now it's $10,000 for the week and they tell you not to even bother cleaning it since they know how to get the dust out. It's a science. My friends who still go every year have an airstream so that makes a big difference.

Not for me. My youngest brother went a few years back, and that's the closest I'll ever get to a week on the playa.

It's the next level of evolution of the psychedelic scene. It makes a dead show seem quaint, from a psychedelic drugs (and people who can handle their drugs) perspective. It's the future of the counterculture, and it's pretty Mad Max /apocalyptic in its aesthetic. It will test your energy, your endurance, your comfort zone, but it's just so big in scope, it's a once in a lifetime experience (that you can have every year, if you want). Whether it's your thing or not, it's something to behold and something to be proud of, that it happens in our country (and my state), and that it happens it all. If you can find a ticket and an experienced group of people to go with, I say go!

Showing up in your car with a tent by yourself is just not recommended. Find a scene, spend time in the online forums looking for camps who want volunteers, etc. And heed the advice above about traffic, and not looking like you're holding, on the drive in and out. And drink lots, and lots, of water, get some sleep, and don't forget to eat food.

Expect to spend 5x the ticket price (at LEAST) to outfit your situation. For those with the money, and the time (before, during, and after), I highly recommend it. Bring earlplugs.

burning man was cool in the drag racing and drive by shooting gallery days

now it costs like a thousand bucks or more just to go make your own scene, and be seen

the real beauty of desert living is it's already it's own year round psychedelic experience

There is nothing about that "event" that has ever appealed to me, but I have always respected it and admired its intent, especially the original and early years.

I know quite a few people who were participating from the first years and would tell of their often hard to believe adventures.

If I understand it all correctly, in its earlier years it was a completely off the grid, purely organic counter culture experience, with no fences, no tickets, no advertising, no real plans, just a wide open human experiment and free-form living art exhibit in the most inhospitable environment possible, attended by those fully invested and totally hip to it, while virtually no one else in the world had any idea it was happening or even existed.

It sounds like in these later years with its ever growing popularity it has become a bit homogenized and been forced to become much more organized, which is probably good in some ways but sounds sort of against the original intent. Many, many more sightseers not really invested or prepared but just looking for a party, rich people helicoptering in with upscale VIP living conditions, lots of people looking to profit off it.

The way my friends talk about it now sounds similar to how the original Haight Ashbury folks talk about the Summer of Love in 1967, which is generally the time the media and common culture uses to talk about that scene, while the originals will tell you that '67 was when the real scene was over.

Also a bit like what the Shakedown scene turned into from its humble honest beginnings.

Anyway, I suppose that's what happens to most anything that's good, over time it becomes more & more popular, more controlled, more diluted and it changes from its beginnings. Most of the people I know who went in the past don't go anymore, but some do and they all still speak highly, even reverently about it.

It sure sounds like a hell of a thing. If you go enjoy it, and report back.

GO TO THE BRUTALITY BLAZING HOT, FREEZING COLD, DUSTY, WINDY, INSANE HUMAN ART EXHIBIT!!!

I was invited to play guitar for the gospel choir one year, but I couldn't afford the near $1,000 in fees (let alone driving down, etc).  I'll stick w/ the Oregon Country Fair!

>>>>Lots of dust. Unbearable heat. Loud shitty music everywhere ya go.

If you've driven through western oklahoma, that's an accurate summary.

A huge line of cars is seen following last year's festival, when some Burners said they had to wait up to 12 hours to exit.

From today's Dailymail.com...

Burning Man tickets flood the market for LESS than $575 face value after nightmarish 2022 conditions. Tickets normally cost $575, on top of the $150 parking pass.  But as of Friday, resellers were offering tickets as cheap as $139, with parking passes marked down to $105, as an apparent glut of unwanted tickets hit the market.  Longtime 'Burners,' as participants are known, told the outlet that a number of factors are discouraging attendance this year, including weather concerns.  As well, last year was the first Burning Man after a two-year pandemic hiatus, and attendance surged to a record high as fans flocked back to the event.  Since many Burners like to take years off between attending, the pandemic pause may have reset the cycle and teed up 2023 as an off-year.  Several Burners also cited weather concerns, after last year's event suffered through temperatures as high as 103F, and strong winds blasted the festival, piling up dunes that made travel by bike difficult.

According to the San Francisco Standard, Burners who are selling their tickets also cited financial concerns as a reason for backing out this year. Burning Man has longstanding ties to the Bay Area and its tech industry -- in fact, the event was first held on a San Francisco beach in the 1980s, when it originated as a small bonfire ceremony for the summer solstice. The tech industry has been hard-hit by layoffs in recent months, with more than 227,000 technology sector workers laid off globally this year, according to tracking site Layoffs.fyi.  Other Burner complaints include an influx of social media influencers at the event, which some might argue goes against Burning Man's 'no spectators' mandate, which requires all who attend to participate and contribute in some way.  As well, some are annoyed with the proliferation of loud, pulsating electronic music at Burning Man, turning the experiential art encounter into something more like a rave.

Talk about "Jumping the F'n. Shark".... Paris Hilton is seen at Burning Man last year.

Never been but know some local burners who throw local events that emphasize the "burn" element, like giant x-mas tree bonfires on the beach.  I saw a video of one of the local events on some private land out in the mountains where they had a full size medieval catapult launching flaming projectiles at the structure they built.

Wow, thanks for all the insights and advice. I'm of the mind that what you put into an experience has a lot to do with it's resultant satisfaction, be it prep, logistics, travel, and hardships. Some of my best experiences were due to extreme conditions, so this might fit right in.

To those that have gone several times, were tickets difficult to get? Any insider tips on how to up my chances?

Having said the above, I will confess to watching the live videos many times(with the sound off). I am always impressed with the undertaking. And the "hot" ladies. Just not interested in going.  However, if I was rich, helicoptering in to VIP setup sounds doable. Just with good ear plugs.

Video of how the cops dealt with the protestors is pretty crazy.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8fDM60MS84&t=575s

Jumped the shark back in 91 (semi-joking).

Used to be the only sand you had to deal with was the sand from Baker beach.

My girlfriend and I are in these pictures. We lived nearby on 28th and CA at the time and my buddy from the Cacophony Society told us about it (in 89). So we went down there to party and watch some crazy guy burn a sculpture.  And help raise the Man, which didn't go smoothly that year.

Another friend was on the early construction crews and occasionally we attended various ravelike functions with this ever expanding  group of freaks. There was a lot of alternative culture going on in San Francisco at the time and the growing Burning Man activities were only a small part of the fun.

Most people don't know that in 91 the Man was raised at Fort Mason on a barge as an art installation (after its first desert foray).. I have a better picture somewhere showing me hauling on a rope to help raise it up. It wasn't supposed to burn there but I sorta remember a ballast in a blacklight did catch on fire. I do remember the barge starting to float away while everyone was distracted drinking beer. Good times.

91_barge.jpg

Holy shit, Mike. I guess that sensitivity training didn't take. LOL  What a bunch of dicks. Why am I picturing salivating lawyers?

Tribal police have no love for outsiders!

Nice pictures of the early days Alan. BTW for all the people clamoring for the early days it happens every year over July 4th weekend. No fences, no tickets, lots of guns, and the hot springs are open just drive out to Gerlach NV. Drive through town and take a right turn out to the desert and the join the few thousand other people out there having fun.

As for that video the cops are assholes but I really have to question your ability to function if you took a look around at the world in 2023, and said to yourself Burningman is the thing that needs to be shut down to right this ship.

I'm not fan at all of police and authority at all but it's even a bigger dick move to BLOCK TRAFFIC to try and prove your point.

I think they did the right thing moving those assholes out of the way, perhaps that's just me.

From the traffic alone Burning Man looks like hell to me.

Nothing worse than waiting for someone else to move out the way!

Peace and love (in ringo's voice) to you all.

Definitely not my cup of tea.  Sounds more like a burning drag.

Most of the "burners" I've met seem like they're a few french fries short of a happy meal.

Hijacking native land in order to stage a political protest. Wow.

I mean, that takes some serious chutzpah

also unsurprising to see how completely dangerous and untrained the Paiute tribal rangers (still) are

The Paiute rangers seemed happy to see us over Labor Day weekend in 1986 when Ranch Rock was held at Pyramid Lake.

A few years back, I was in touch with a woman who was on the production team for the festival and she told me that the money the Pauite made that weekend helped them win a court battle that had been going on for years about their water rights. She said that members of the tribe still talked about the time the hippies came and danced and helped save their lake.

The location of the protest was not on tribal land, the tribal cops are just assisting as part of a mutual assistance thing, with just about every other cop in northern Nevada. Most are actually pretty cool, they enjoy the field trip. They give more hugs than tickets, most of them.

Blocking a two-lane highway like that is a serious safety issue and was not a good move. I wouldn't have crashed my patrol vehicle into the blockade, nor pulled a gun, but hey, it got the job done.

According to the Pyramid Lake Paiute tribe's own press release, the location of the protest (mm 34 on state route 447) is located squarely on pyramid tribal land.

are you a cop, jackohearts?

humans ruin everything

Lol

They are in for it this year after mostly 100 plus temps all of last year, but not this year. It is such a shit show when it rains hard out there. The surface you are camping on turns to a soupy mud that sticks to the bottom of your shoes creating platform shoes pretty quickly. If you let it dry it sets like cement.

In 2000 we had sustained 60 mph winds and a lot of rain. The peaks were dusted in snow the next day. It was brutal - a lot of the camps were just tangled metal. If I were out there I would leave today.

Live video stream...

https://burningman.org/live-webcast/

Maybe when I was 21 this would have been appealing.

Then again, maybe not.

Wow, nearly 2 decades on this ol' DBMB and I'm finally outed as a cop... Was bound to happen sooner or later, I guess. I have files on all of you, but don't worry, if you cooperate you'll get off easy.

From the video it looked to me like the protest was on the county road between Gerlach and the playa. If it was on 447, I stand corrected.

Heading out there tomorrow for a very short trip this year. Hope it does rain, just for the novelty, but only a very little bit... wish me luck. El Nino's opinion is probably the objectively smarter one, but sometimes you gotta learn the hard way, right?

Well, I must say, checking into the small view from the stream for a moment at 12:30am, it looks much cooler and more alive than the grey dust bowl view of this afternoon.

I suppose not surprisingly, this is more a nocturnal event than a daytime one, which would make sense.

Ah, to be young.

But wait, I was young and had my share then, they're having theirs now.

As it should be.

Yeah that live stream especially during the day is like showing the plaza in front of an arena and saying you are live streaming a concert. Check it out at night and particularly tomorrow night during the burn. It's the only time during the week when everyone gets together in one place, but it's best to keep one person back at your camp because that is when the thieving happens too.

Thieving?

Whoa, sick burn, brah.

Can't help thinking "Mad Max."  Have fun.

>>>Thieving?

100,000 people most of them on drugs you better believe there is thieving and all the other bad things that go with a city. Someone hung themselves in my friends open to the public big circus tent like thing. My other friend used to camp with a bunch of EMT's who would stay late and go out into the deep desert to find the bodies after the event. There are almost always bodies. People get fucked up and wander into the desert. They also said most years someone runs into the massive fire when they burn the man. Not sure if that is true but it wouldn't surprise me. I know for a fact around the time I quit going it had become a magnet for sexual assaulters and the rapes were kept out of the press. I will give the organizers the benefit of the doubt on that one since listing all the assaults would probably have just attracted more assaulters, but from the outside looking in it seemed like they just wanted to protect what has become of very lucrative lifestyle for a bunch of people that decided to throw a party in the worst place on earth and became millionaires doing it.

>>>madmax

Thunderdome is one of the original camps.

Thunder.jpg

It is an actual shit show this year. Rain and more rain coming the playa is completely shut down and they are telling people to ration supplies until Tuesday. The trucks servicing the porta potties and RV's can't get in. The people in tents are not having a good time.

Tickets for next year will be super easy to get. The sparkle ponies will all head back to Coachella.

Real Nice Photo:  Can I get one of those please.

That rainbow farting girl just screams Meme me!

Gold at the end of the rainbow?

Looks like hell on earth, but it seems to me that the true burners would embrace the challenges and make it all "living art at the end of the world".

Isn't that the original idea of the whole thing?

Just clicked on the stream. Looks like people were walking their bikes, not riding them. Didn't seem like it was raining at the moment.

Looks pretty deserted.

Screenshot_20230902_133334.png

There are 70K+ people there. This is a good link to see what the city looks like and where all the people are. That picture above is from the center of the playa.

https://www.skypixel.com/photo360s/burning-man-2023-10-10-would-shelter-...

They got just under an inch of rain, but the ground was already saturated from rain they got from Hillary. The bad part is they are expecting just under an inch tonight. They will cope most are prepared, but looking like Tuesday/Wednesday before people can get out. Another cold wet night and I doubt they burn the man tonight or the temple on Sunday. First time for everything.

Raining Man

Wow, cool panorama El Nino.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/burning-man-festival-goers-trapped-in-the...

"Tens of thousands of Burning Man festival-goers have been given a shelter-in-place order and advised to conserve supplies after rainstorms reduced the Nevada desert to an enormous, impassable mud pit.

The U.S. Bureau of Land Management made the call to stop “Burners” from going in or out of the federally protected Black Rock Desert for the remainder of the weeklong event, which began Aug. 27, The Associated Press reported. Anyone en route to Burning Man is advised to turn around before they are forced to.

Organizers announced on social media that the Black Rock airport had been closed, and only emergency vehicles would be permitted to drive on the playa or festival grounds."

Wow, what a mess.

Good one Woz.

Well, that site use to be a lake...   and after 0.80" of rain last night thru this morning, it's becoming one again (let alone the up to 3" in the mountains last few days).  The forecast is for more rain too...

Bring on the mudshark!

Wow, almost an inch of rain? Those poor people

And a Boom !

Well played fine sir well played

heady

should give Chris some good new material to work with for his stand up comedy

Lots of rain moving through that area today.  Mixed messages from folks on FB, lol, some say the press is exaggerating, others sick of the muck.

I would think he could get at least five minutes just out of the name Black Rock City.

Checking on the stream periodically.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/thousands-stranded-burning-man-plan-cerem...

“We plan to burn the Man at 9:30 pm tonight, weather permitting. We will share additional information by noon today,” an account run by the festival’s organizers initially posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

But, the weather thwarted the plans to “burn the Man.”

“Due to rain & muddy conditions Sunday & an inability to move heavy equipment & fire safety onsite, the Man Burn will not happen tonight, Sunday,” the account posted in an update on Sunday evening. “It is now scheduled for Monday 9/4, at 9pm. Chapel of Babel is scheduled to burn at midnight, Tuesday 9/5 (i.e. Monday night 9/4).”

The area is under a flood watch until noon on Monday, the day the festival was scheduled to end, according to the National Weather Service."

Report today from an acquaintance:

I have good news to report!

The sun is out! The portos have been maintained! And I got a very good night’s sleep.

What national reports I have seen are accurate, but perhaps emphasizing the shit show at the expense of the resiliency that I am witnessing as I wander around.

Grateful for the frontline reports.  What would we do without?

Be good custie.

Stream shows a lot of people out and about and vehicles driving across the playa. Wondering about the two cranes by "The Man." Setting it up for a burn tonight?

The stream link Lance posted above is  https://burningman.org/live-webcast/  Glad things turned around a bit for these folks.

Wacken Open Air.

yes the report is the burn is planned for tonight, and people are supposed to be able  to start leaving at noon.

there are pictures of a fair number of vehicles that tried to drive out after being told not to, and they are stuck but good.

If only the din would remain within your noisy noggin.

Is Wacken Open Air where you would choose to be, Racket? You're a traveler, are you there?

Hi Mike.  Do you have any reports from acquaintances?

I don't believe we have any, but I'll ask: Which acquaintances?

Friend in Reno left Burning Man 9am.  Just got to Reno 1:30pm, only 4-1/2 hours.  Not toooooo shabby.

Who th fuck let him back in?  What a POS.

I'm going to guess that that's a rhetorical question, Mark.

What's not to love?

So much, if you look around, but who's got time for that?

People At Burning Man Punished By Being At Burning Man

Sep 3, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

BLACK ROCK CITY, NV — People who chose to attend the infamous Burning Man Festival have been punished by being at the Burning Man Festival.

"If you're the sort of person who goes to Burning Man, you deserve to be at Burning Man," said local man Bob Stallings. "The horror."

Long known as a haven for the very depths of human depravity, the Burning Man Festival grounds have become cut off by floodwaters, trapping attendees. "Due to deteriorating road conditions, the people at Burning Man will have to be at Burning Man," said Police Chief Reggie Thompson. "They will face terrors few of us can imagine. There will be violent criminals strung out on meth, sex offenders lurking around every corner, all among the stench of human waste - also known as the Burning Man Festival."

As relief efforts stalled, the muddy roads trapping attendees have shown no signs of drying out. "It's looking dire," said local reporter Alicia Mills. "They're running out of shrooms, and fast. The LSD is already gone. We estimate that by this point, every attendee now has seventeen STDs. If they don't get out quick and get treated, well - it's going to burn for a long time."

At publishing time, theologians were speculating whether the Lord had sent rainwaters as a simple way of granting mankind the evil desires of his heart.

Biden Approves $40 Billion Worth Of Drugs To Be Airdropped To Burning Man

Sep 4, 2023 · BabylonBee.com

BLACK ROCK CITY, NV — President Biden has approved an emergency shipment of $40 billion worth of drugs be airdropped to stranded revelers at the Burning Man Festival.

"Look, Jack, we have 70,000 hippies stranded in tents in the middle of the desert with no uppers, downers, OR psychedelics," he noted from his beach chair in Delaware. "That's why I've asked Congress to declare a state of emergency and rush these much-needed drugs to Nevada immediately!"

Sources noted that supplies of illicit substances had been running low after heavy rains stranded attendees in the desert for several days. "Many of these folks only brought enough drugs for two days," a source at the festival noted. "As they remain stranded for the fourth day, people are beginning to reach critical levels of sobriety!"

A White House spokesman said President Biden has appointed his son Hunter to lead the operation. "Nobody knows more about obtaining and distributing drugs than the president's son," the spokesman said.

At publishing time, festival attendees complained that the emergency airdrop only seemed to contain $30 billion worth of drugs and that Hunter Biden was nowhere to be seen.

Sen. Mike Lee says Burning Man flooding is ‘God’s judgment’

https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2023/09/04/sen-mike-lee-says-burnin...      Not sure about a paywall so here's some text.

Sen. Mike Lee suggested the flooding that has trapped thousands of Burning Man attendees in the Nevada desert was “God’s judgment” for engaging in lewd and sexually charged events at the festival.

Burning Man attendees were told to shelter in place Saturday evening because heavy rain, lasting for several hours, made it virtually impossible for vehicles to travel in and out. Some attendees, including celebrity DJ Diplo and comedian Chris Rock, walked to safety despite warnings. Thousands of people remained stranded as of Monday. At least one person has died.

In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Lee linked to a provocative story headlined, “Wildest Burning Man events - orgasm hypnosis, whippings and naked oil wrestling.”

“This isn’t healthy. God’s judgment is real,” Lee commented.

Mr. Lee, of course, didn't comment about all those years when the weather was fine, nor did he bring up the lascivious acts of the perverse Warren Jeffs clan that took place for years in southern Utah.

3 of the 4 people I know that were out there have reported in. They are all fine and had a good time. Mostly they enjoyed being able to catch up on sleep. The worst thing that happened is that clean up is going to be much more difficult this year.

Saw I guy interviewed that was there for the first two times in the desert and went back this year for the first time. He said once the rain came it reminded him of the early days. All the lights and people whizzing around on E bikes earlier in the week was a little overwhelming for him.

I have to say most of the people commenting on social media and the actual media is like listening to Republicans talk about socialism. So much righteous commentary that has absolutely nothing to do with the actual event.

Senator Lee pontificating on the mind of God.  Rich!

>>>> "As they remain stranded for the fourth day, people are beginning to reach critical levels of sobriety!"

LOL......we've all been there and it's a serious condition. If i were looking for a good source, i would definitely ask the gal who can generate a rainbow from her butt. She looks happy and obviously has super powers.

MTG on Burning Man:

"There are 73,000 or 75,000 people in the Nevada desert now at this Burning Man. They're locked in. They're not allowed to leave. And they're basically, probably being brainwashed that climate change is the cause of all of it, it's the root of all evil and it's going to destroy the earth and they’re feeling the panic.”

Somebody needs to dose MTG.

The women complained that Biden's economic plan has created too many jobs in her district and the carpet mills now have to pay their employees more. The horror.

Nice of you to think that she deserves the opportunity to be dosed. I think she should just disappear.

The webcam has gone severely downhill. Used to have cameras on the ground showing the people and the parties.  Now it is pretty boring.

Parallels with the arc of the Dead, once their popularity increased, attracted more people, the word got out, and the scene changed. Nothing stays the same forever but too many micro-dosing techies, and rich and famous people there to be seen, not to be part of the scene. And, way, way to much media coverage of this.
