Thanks for posting this. A fine show and I was fortunate enough to be standing in front of Mr Lesh for the 2nd set. Seems that the band frequently played well at Cal Expo.

But 31 years ago. Yikes

Road Trips Vol. 2 No. 4 for those keeping track

I remember thinking after the HCS that if they are still able to open a show with Samson>HCS... that there is hope.

and any show with a Crazy Fingers always brings me joy.

One of my fave playin's was Cal Expo 84, epic jam!  Went into China Doll, more epic jam, into a rare Phil / Brent jam!!!

Very windy show, we lost power in Winters that night, the bar we were at stayed open until 4am since the clock was stopped.  Big group from Oregon drove down and stayed with friends there

Thanks for the post JP......I remember this one; it Was a monster Playin'.

Thankful to be on the rail between Weir and Garcia, the last GA venue in CA....

It was also the 20th anniversary of the killer '73 Kezar show....

And then the next night, the first set had about 4 of my favorite Jerry songs, then in the

second set they did that weird Picasso Moon-> Fire on the Mountain and Cassidy-Uncle John's-Cassidy,

then a Gloria encore to end the run.

I saw a bunch of strong shows that late Spring/Summer.

Beverly Garland...

I have good memories of that mid-week run.

I had begun substitute teaching that year so I was free when I wanted to be. The band had just finished a weekend run at Shoreline that had been a personal rager for me and I was still buzzing from the experience a couple of days later, so despite my general lack of overt interest in the band at that time I figured what the hell, jumped in my car the afternoon of the first Cal Expo show and blazed up by myself to Sac without tickets or any plan.

I went straight to the venue, figuring I'd find a hotel room after the show. Because of my rising position in the company tickets weren't a problem, but I'd never been to that venue and didn't know Sacramento at all, so this off-the-cuff experience was all a bit of an adventure for this generally non-adventurous person.

After the show I began aimlessly driving around looking for a motel and ended up in a sketchy downtown Travelodge with locked gates restricting access to the rooms. Around 2:00am my room phone rang, which was completely bizarre since not a soul in the world knew where I was.

When I answered some guy says, "Bob! It's me Danny! I'm here, let me up to your room man!" I told him my name wasn't Bob and I didn't know anyone named Danny. He said, "Common' Bob! Room 204, right? You said I could crash in your room!"

Even after multiple clear explanations Danny refused to believe me and continued to repeatedly call my room for over an hour...... "Common' Bob! Quit fuckin' around man, I KNOW it's you! You promised!!!"

I felt like I was in a Cheech & Chong routine, and because of the goodies I had enjoyed at the show I was wide awake and found the whole thing hysterical.

All these years later my memories about those shows are of feeling good about doing something spontaneous with no plan, which was/is not my usual style, being completely unimpressed with the venue but thinking that the shows were pretty good for that era and having a real good time overall.

But my main memory of that time has always been of denying poor Danny and the desperate, teary sound of his voice as he realized he had been ditched.

Friggin' wooks.

(Addendum - The next day I told a couple of friends about poor Danny, and to this day those guys will call me Bob. Also, when first registering for the Philzone I almost used Bob as my handle, specifically because of my experience with good ol' Danny)

Yikes IWT too, w/ Seattle taper friends.

One of my fave venues.

I drove out from Maine for these Cal Expo also Shoreline, and Laguna Seca Daze.

Cal Expo was a brain changer for me. The only outdoor GD this 22yo kid had seen, were giant shows back east.
These shows were so lovely, nothing but good vibes at this venue.
West Coast eye-opener.
The Playin' was inspired, like a step back in time. All 3 shows had their special moments.
So glad I made the trek.

The 86 Cal Epo shows were super fun as well.

Thanks to those CO freaks in front of me for an "electrifying" experience!

86 Cal Expo? Do mean the Sunday Gimme some Lovin, Playin, drums, Playin, Space, Playin, Good Lovin? That was a great fun afternoon
