Can You "See" Through Your Fingertips?

Forums:

Can you visualize a situation using only your sense of touch? Background: I work on some complex electro mechanical machines and sometime I have to connect a cable or loosen a screw or a fastener in a blind situation, reaching up and behind a larger item blocking my view from the actual task at hand. I have developed the ability to "see" the situation by turning my tactile sensations and an acquired visual rolodex of parts to create a "mind map" of the unvisable space and work in it.

I imagine a former sighted person would develop this, not sure if the same would happen if someone was blind from birth.

What are your experiences and memories and thoughts on this? Has it happened to you? Did you even think it was unusual or extraordinary?

Super rad

No

And

Yes!

Thank god for all the cool new ratcheting, and jointed tools. I used to install low voltage items and have done repair on cars. I can remember trying to to line up a screwdriver and having to turn it with pliers and doing it not only blind but contorting my body like plastic man in some situations. Not to mention crawling around tight attics running cables in 160 degree heat with a face full of installation feeling around for a truss, wall or wire blind.

With those innate skills, if you ever wanted to pursue a career in medicine, I'd recommend the field of proctology... if dentistry doesn't suit ya.

Never thought about it! Would strong hands make me a meaty urologist?

Hey Fabes, this little tool kit is a lifesaver. The little red ratchet set:
