`Tis the season (in Guatemala).
Many thanks to the hardworking farmers in Central America providing great cantaloupes this winter. I opened a nice one this week. Hard to gauge sometimes. I like to cut them right before they start to decompose. They are the sweetest in that moment.
This very old joke... on a very old postcard. This pic is a download but I have this one and others in a produce series published in maybe the '30s. I wish I could find the things I have around here.
^there are a lotta white grapefruit out here in SoCA, Jaz, but I mostly prefer the sweeter ruby reds, usually from FL or TX. I have been eating/drinking at least 1 every morning with fresh-squeezed oranges for decades now. Yum.
Nothing better than the very elusive, perfectly vine ripened cantaloupe. "Why is is elusive?" you may ask. Well, the critters, moles, coons, and groundhogs can smell the moment that they are perfect and they attack them before sunrise, leaving gobbled fruit. Thus, I always have to pick them early.

My favorite.
It's hard to find a good one, especially in a store, but every summer I'm on a quest.
Farmers markets and roadside stands, if they got 'em I stop.
Hauled a couple cantalopue back to the room from Nashville Farmers Market when Phil played last July.

From the store or salad bar, out of the question. Pointless really.
But a good cantaloupe is something I can't shake.
Never could.
I'm not big on honeydew yet.
