“The Castro Theatre is a wonderful building that we will upgrade for more use in the future,” says Gregg Perloff, Another Planet Entertainment, CEO and Co-Founder. “We want to activate and re-energize the building, making improvements to the customer and artist experience, including dressing room upgrades, restoring the marquee and blade and expanding food and beverage service. We want to present all sorts of programming in the theater – comedy, music, film, community and private events and more. We look forward to further contributing to the culture and economy of this vibrant neighborhood.”
The families of Bay Properties Inc. have been the sole owner of the Castro Theatre since it was built in 1922 — this institution has stood the test of time as a multi-generational family-run business and beloved San Francisco venue.
“After operating the Castro Theatre for nearly a hundred years, we have chosen to partner with Another Planet Entertainment for the next evolution of our historic theatre,” said Chris Nasser Padian, Bay Properties Vice-President. “Another Planet is an ideal partner, as they have a rich history with the City and in rehabilitating historic venues. Bay Properties is excited that the partnership with APE will continue the legacy of the Castro Theatre and Castro neighborhood.”

Saw the Last Waltz there and it was loud.
It's definitely been under utilized over the years. This should hopefully open up the programming.

Ah, Greg & Sherry are always
Ah, Greg & Sherry are always thinking, always a step ahead.
Another Planet will once again cut into and do a better job in another's territory, getting into the big city again with a venue that can compete with not only the Warfield and Masonic, but also the Fillmore & Regency, and with more versatility. In SF they'll now have the BG Civic, the Castro and the small club Independent, as well as Golden Gate Park with Outside Lands.
They were trying to get a theater in SF long before they settled on the Fox in Oakland and worked out a sweetheart deal to rebuild that place, I have no doubt they'll do a first class job upgrading & running the Castro.
The Castro is smaller than those other theaters, but it's a cool old venue with much better sound for live music than the Fox. I seriously doubt they'll gut the seats so it will be good for comedy, jazz, acoustic and other sitdown type events and it's in a fun neighborhood in the heart of the city. The only issues with it are that there is very little public space - the lobby is tiny and the bathrooms are small & difficult to access, and there is absolutely NO WHERE to park anywhere near it, but I love the idea of getting that classic old hall back on the map.
I just saw The Residents there a few months ago and had a great time (after driving around the neighborhood for an hour looking for a place to park).
If the corporate promoters were taking this on it would be just another venue in a crowded landscape, but with Another Planet behind this, it's going to be a good & different thing.
Now, if only the damned plague would go away.

Interesting thread!
Interesting thread!
Also noticed that APE needs a marketing manager for all of their venues, that's going on my application list.
Anyone got connections with APE?
