Apparently he died of drowning in his jacuzzi, and no drugs were found at the scene. Sounds like it may have been a heart attack.
He was the only one of the three male leads I could even stand on that show. David Schwimmer's Ross character was a milquetoast, and the Joey character was just a dumbass.
