Chris Thile/Billy Strings NYC

Forums:

This was sweet!  And a long time coming, IMO.

More later.  Meanwhile, Relix was there.  I haven't seen any of the videos yet.  Don't know if they're worthwhile or will give you motion sickness.

Lily remarked that she'd never seen musicians having a better time on stage.

glued to the tv tomorrow morning

CBS

Thanks Mikey Minerals for sharing this link! It's an audience recording so not pristine sound by any measure, but still nice if you want to give a listen

That was fun.  Did they do an interview too or just the three musical numbers?

I didn't catch the broadcast, Ken. Just found the links on Reddit.

Someone needs to tell Chris Bill Cosby is out of style.

Otherwise, very good fun.

I never did circle back here...

What a fun night. We didn't know about Cory until the previous day's "Info about your show" email.  Changed expectations a bit, as I'd only seen Cory in some Snarky Puppy videos.  The whole Billy/Chris section mirrored my initial expectations in the end.  The rest was gravy.  Good gravy.

FIRST TIME: Seeing Billy or Cory in person.

FIRST TIME, LONG TIME:

1. Being on an NYC bus. If memory serves, 1998, on my way to the first film junket I worked (Ronin).

2. Being in that hall. Last time being '83 for a double bill of The Jazz Messengers and The David Sanborn Band (Letterman band minus Paul).  When it was Avery Fisher Hall.  With Lily.  So early on it wasn't even a "date."  It was the first time I'd seen a wireless guitar set-up.  At one point, Hiram Bullock jumped off the stage and soloed his way up the aisle and out into the lobby.  Came down the other aisle quite a while later. Never paused.

3. Post-show, deciding cab or bus, we headed south and stopped at the next bus stop.  Lily looks around and says, "I spent half my life a this bus stop."  (She earned her Master's at Fordham Lincoln Center/Rose Hill after her day job w/NYC BoE).

HILLBILLY OR HIPSTER?  Booklyn?  'Bama?  Some serious beards.

WTF? MOMENT:  This may not speak well of my powers of observation.  Checking out the stage after settling in. Shared mic center stage. Individual mics farther out. B3/Leslie stage-left.  Piano stage-right.  The keys being separated made me think there might be another guest (maybe Brad Mehldau, with whom Thile has performed/recorded).  Cut to Cory's solo section.  A few latecomers arrive in front of us as my pregame (gummy/lager/one-hits) comes together.  My view is temporarily blocked as Cory shifts into Love's In Need Of Love Today.  I close my eyes and and absentmindedly start dropping my heel on the "one". Heel-droppin'. Head-boppin'. Then the "one" comes back at me through the PA. Wait...what?  That's when I noticed Cory's kick-drum under the piano.surprise

VERY LINCOLN CENTER:  From the outside balcony at theater level, watching a blinged-out octogenarian in a full-length, fur-trimmed coat gingerly make her way across the plaza.

NOT SO MUCH:  Post show, 10-12 balloon dealers outside.
