Connections or knowledge of staff at Internet Archive / Live Music Archive?

Forums:

Hey all,

The job I moved down here for sucks, so I'm job hunting again for media relations manager positions.

Send me good vibes today at 5pm PST for a round 1 interview with the Internet Archive!

If anyone has intel on this organization's work culture, would love to hear.  Have no idea what the salary range is, unfortunately.

The job is 100% remote, but they do house all their servers and have conference rooms in an old library on Funston Ave in SF.

... and if you have any headhunter friends, looking for one.

also expecting to get interviews w/ Sonoma County soon and maybe with a cool organization in Marin called Fibershed.

thanks and happy friday

Good Luck! Internet Archive is one of the world's great organizations. So you know, their amazing building at Funston and Clement was not previously a library, rather, the former Fourth Church of Christ, Scientist.

I only know that Brewster Kahle is the founder.  (from the annual fund raising drives)

Thanks Roarschock for the correct info about the building -- the photo looked like an old library to me...

Seems as though the founder still runs the office, which is a concern.... there's a thing called "founderism" when the founder can't let go of the organization they founded, which conflicts with the leadership abiliities of the executive director... so I'll ask questions about that...

They are hosting a patio BBQ / party next week at their HQ w/ a band called San Francisco Airship (?) that includes tours of their building ... maybe I'll register for that and get a tour...they posted it to Twitter, so looks like anyone can go...

Sending vibes now,, I'll forget by then,, plus from the east coast they may take that long to get there, depending on the weather.

What a great gig, sorry about your present one.

Best Of Luck Heading Your Way !!@@!!

Ha I saw the acoustic duo  version of that band yesterday in the backyard of the Winter's Tavern in Pacifica after a hike in San Pedro Park.

If you become an employee they'll make an effigy of you. Kinda weird.  Brewster is smart, intense and committed. Good luck

I made a reservation for the event...

Good luck with the interview!  Sounds like a great career opportunity.

Thanks Ras for the good vibes...

Walstib, Funny that you saw that band...  I'll find you at the event... want to hear more about your effigy comment.

... and thanks Ken, too -- I almost went for a masters at UW in digital library science... if only I would've followed throught w/ that!

I'm sure the effigies will be on display inside the auditorium....

Seems like an amazing opportunity,  hope the salary matches with you.

Best o' luck.

^^ oh you meant LITERAL effigies, eek.
Sounds like something from Portland or Eugene, LOL
I'll tell them I already have one, no need for more.

Thanks Jazfish, yup, fortunately while at City of Portland I pitched and placed a story in Wired and worked on a Digital Divide project and for ACLU, so hoping that combo of experience will make an impression.

Bummer about the sucky job, LLOLLO, but working at the Archive sounds pretty darn cool. I hope this works out for you. Vibes headed your way.

Too bad that your new job sucks. There was an excellent PBS thing called the Book Makers, that included a great segment about the physical setup and workings of the Internet Archive - it was wonderful. The whole thing was lovely, I think you'd like it a lot, and then there's this new connection.

Judit! Thanks for sharing that, I'll look it up this weekend... sounds like something I'd enjoy regardless of the interview.

The story of Marygrove College Library.       https://youtu.be/GmgLwryYGl4

^^^ That was beautiful and inspiring, thanks CR!

great link china-rider

Sweet link, C>R

Phew,  interview done!  I'm competing against 15 other first round candidates.

If I make it to the next round, it will be a panel interview w/ the founder, the legal counsel and their outside PR agency, eek.

I also told them that I'll be at their event on Tuesday eve... they were encouraging about that and the person who interviewed me said she would be there.

Thanks for your ears and the good vibes, all -- we'll see...

Good luck to you with this. What a cool place to work that would be!

That was the organization that bought the entire stock of Bop Street Records in Ballard when the owner decided to retire last summer.  At the time, they said they were going to digitize the collection for the archive.  I'm curious what they are going to do with those records after they've been archived.

Good luck, Llollo.

Thanks Herbal!   If the records were 78s, maybe they are part of this Internet Archive project: http://great78.archive.org/

I still have a box of jazz and classical 78s that belonged to my mom, they are the first and only records I listened to as a child... going to check out this project to see if they'd like to digitize them.

Bop Street had 78's but the bulk of his collection were 33 1/3 rpm 12" LPs, and the owner had a pretty insane stash of 45 rpm Blues 7" records he was sitting on.  There was lots of speculation up here among the heavy collectors over just what the Internet Archive had bought, as many felt he had too many bad condition records in his store and that he would never let go of his choice nuggets.

Geez, threads and with opportunities like this are rare. If I may ask, did you feel confident after the interview?

I did.... but I don't know who the competition is and I was brain dead from the work week.

I'll feel more confident if I make a good connection with the woman I interviewed with and the founder on Tuesday eve.

F the competition,, you so got this man

Fingers crossed!!

I'm already thinking on strategy for next round... Though I'm not writing up notes yet... wish I could just wire in to my brain and have it dump thoughts to a Word doc.

Is there an app for that? LOL

Elon Musk is working on it, LLOLLO.

https://neuralink.com/

So,  good luck with that! Now can someone tell me how to acess the Jerry shows hidden on the archive?thanks

Mike: whoa.

Thomas: I'll add that to my list of interview questions, ;)

Wow I had a great time last night at the Internet Archive event -- it had the feeling of an old-school SF neighborhood party - band outdoors on the patio playing Jefferson Airplane songs with a certain sweet smoke in the air, the founder, Brewster, was leading the dancing looking dapper in a linen suit and fedora.

It is clearly an organization that values individuality, unlike my current workplace. I would love to work there if I got the right offer... so many stories that I could pitch to media.
It was awkward when I met certain staff members, as I haven't been invited back yet for round 2.

I got to meet Jason, who wrote the IOS Live Music Archive app, and told him thank you and how much I listen to LMA shows.

The founder gave a tour of the building, which used to be a church (white building in photos). On the second floor there is a large room with pews and all the effigies that Walstib mentioned earlier (see album)... the artist who makes them was there, and she says that all employees get an effigy after working there for 2 years.  Look for the one of John Perry Barlow!

I liked how the Petabyte servers are on prominent display in that room, as they are constantly flashing from download activity.  A Petabyte = 1 million gigabytes!

The ground floor features a large community room and office / work area, with digital scanners for their book scanning work, which supports Wikipedia pages as source reference information.  All sorts of nooks and crannies to explore.

I also learned that they are establishing duplicate digital libraries in Amsterdam, Alexandria, Egypt and Vancouver, BC --- because as the Brewster said, "...because governments burn libraries."  They are in the middle of a lawsuit right now, as major publishers want them to stop their work.

We learned that Brewster is far more interested in preserving dying ethnic music, like Cuban Son....  I stumped him with a question about the Catalan music that accompanies their national dance, the Sardana -- and he suggested I dance it, LOL.  (Sardana is a difficult dance to learn because the timing is complicated, like some GD songs) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sardana

Herbal, Walstib asked about that Seattle record collection, maybe he can post with that update.

Since I hear that so many of you like post-event photo essays, here is mine > https://photos.app.goo.gl/4NNCU4XwKrKZkDCZ6

Twas a cool event!

The Bop Street 78 collection was purchased pretty much site unseen and no inventory accompanied the collection. According to Brewster they still have to complete the digitization of the Boston Library donation before work begins on Bop Street. That turntable designed by George Blood is radical, 4 tonearms with 4 different stylus widths to best capture the grooves of the 78s.

They also just purchased a collection from Bowling Green U (Brewster leak)

In that effigy of Barlow he holds a manuscript of the memoir "Mother American Night" released posthumously.

A good read i might add. Barlow was a Renaissance Man...

Very cool photos!

I've noticed that building for years and always check it out on my drives up to TxR, often wondering what the place was/is. I always figured it's used by some wealthy, boring company or religion. How great that such a cool old building is being used for something that's actually cool.

But that chapel room with all the effigies seems a bit creepy. I wouldn't want to be alone in that place at night!

There's a good horror story in there though.

Good luck!

<<I'm curious what they are going to do with those records after they've been archived>>

per Brewster: They house the records in a climate controlled warehouse  (no location divulged) and most importantly, the collections are kept intact.

No yard sale at the LMA...

Nice pics, LLOLLO. Are those servers behind glass? I'm wondering about climate control.

Walstib got closer to the servers than I did, but pretty sure there was no glass enclosure.

Agree, those effigies are creepy and cool at the same time!

Update: Yesterday I received the nicest, most complimentary regret letter ever from Internet Archive that acknowledged my attendance at the event.
Maybe the founder didn't like that I stumped him w/ my question about Catalan music, LOL.  Oops.
Since they have a PR agency on contract, I would imagine that the winning applicant was somehow connected to their universe.

Leaving that one in the dust, as I have an interview w/ Sonoma County today at 1:40PM PST, so any Zoner vibes at that time will be appreciated!

you don't have to live like an effigy

Good luck with your quest, Llollo.

Thanks Herbal!  ...good reminder about the creepy effigy factor.

ONWARD through the fog!

Sonoma County - wishing you a good interview. And then a great one for the second one, and so on. If you want the job I hope it happens.

Buena Suerte, LLOLLO (or should I say Bona sort?), with job vibes now recalibrated for Sonoma County.

Digui Digui Mike, bona sort!  :)

Thanks all for the good vibes.

Still would love to live in the city, but maybe that won't happen til a future year.

My current manager has been creeping me out recently, she's constantly complimenting me on my excellent radio DJ voice... but it's actually sort of nasal-toned, I think.

Good luck with the Sonoma County interview.   There are worse places to live and work.

Wow it's over, had a more confident interview than w/ Internet Archive, and I have a good feeling about it!

If I'm invited back, next interview is next Thursday.
Off to write thank you notes...

Confidence is cool, and next Thursday's not too long of a wait too. Continued job vibes headed your way.

> wish I could just wire in to my brain and have it dump thoughts to a Word doc.

Bump for LLOLLO.
