Could you help save a life?

Forums:

I've known this young woman's mother for many years and she is absolutely amazing. Now her daughter needs help a match from a Japanese/Caucasian donor.

If you could help spread the word, or if you know of a candidate, please help. Thank you.

Anyone know any Japanese / Caucasians who might fit the bill? Can you help spread on social media?  Thank you.

I e-mailed with the mom and found out there's a big effort going on for Kaiya in California and especially in the Bay area, and the University of Utah is doing a donor registry drive here soon as well.

Fingers crossed, eh?

(((((((((((( Kaiya and Family )))))))))))))))    Very nice of you, Slickrock.  Fingers crossed.

Thanks Joe, but I just posted a jpg. Not much effort in that.

Update:

Happy to report she got hooked up with a reporter for the mormon-owned media giant with big outreach and this story went out December 8th. With links! Damn, with all those missionaries, hopefully SOMEONE will match.

"Whether Endo can get a donation or not, she is hoping good for others can come from her situation. She is seeing a lot of friends and family join the registry, which will potentially help others in need of stem cells."

I was really pleased with this comment to the story: "I am the same ethnic background and I have been registered on be the match for over a decade. I would love to match her. Sending hope!"

Wow, wouldn't THAT be great.

I hope they find a match for her. Kind of you to help spread the word, Slick. heart

>>>Thanks Joe, but I just posted a jpg. Not much effort in that.

No, but it's the thought and effort that both matter :)

Story on today's TV news. And a somewhat hopeful but still very cautious e-mail accompanied that link. Fingers crossed.

It's a CBS affiliate, so maybe some other stations will pick the story up.

Great news, Slickrock. Thanks.

Yes Judit, great to have some good news in our lives! The amazing thing to me - only 3 matches in a 9 million person database

For anyone who would like to promote this life-saving database for potential donors 18 to 40, here's the link:

Here's the good news update that went out last night:

Excuse the cross-posting as many of you heard earlier this evening via text, but we are eager to share the good news far and wide: Out of 9 million people in the international stem cell donor registry, there were 3 matching donor options for Kaiya, and the doctors selected one of those people a couple weeks ago to be Kaiya's donor.  Kaiya will receive her bone marrow transplant on FEB 08, from an amazing 22-year old male donor.  She'll be admitted to Primary Children's on Feb 02 to begin the preparation for her new stem cells.  We are so incredibly relieved to finally, finally have this set in stone, and have a date. We are more or less on lock down until then, to make sure she remains 100% healthy and safe before the procedure.

Thanks everyone for the love and support these past couple of months.  We will keep you posted in the weeks and months to come, as Kaiya's journey is far, far, from over.  Our greatest hope (along with the transplant being 100% successful/no rejection, etc). is that the doctors will let her go back to college next Sept to start over as a freshman again at Cal Poly.  Though it sounds like a long way off, with the immune system of a baby that Kaiya will have for most, well really all, of 2024, going back to school in the Fall is by no means guaranteed.

((((((((((((((((((((((((( Feb. 8th )))))))))))))))))))))))))))

(((((((Slickrock.)))))))))  Thanks for the attentiveness and the updates.  What great news!  And I've been in that database since '04 when a coworker needed a bone marrow transplant. Most of the factory went in and had blood drawn to see if we could be a match. It's a simple thing to do, and the professionals take care of the rest. Easy-peasy.

>>>only 3 matches in a 9 million person database.

It's not narcissistic to know that we truly are unique.

Thanks so much for the update. Great news for sure.

And I've been in that database since '04 when a coworker needed a bone marrow transplant. <<

Sitting here looking at a "Happy Birthday" (give or take four months) letter/notice informing me that I've aged out (61) of a bone marrow donor registry.  If one you young'uns wants to take my place:

Nice work, Joe and Bluestnote. People really helping. Right on!

Bluest, I thought it went to only 40? When I looked into it years ago they told me I was already too old.

^I was 39 in October of '04.  Didn't think about an age limit. ( and can't do simple math today either...lol)

wishing the best for this young lady

Might be different registries, Slick.

"You may recall from your initial registration...removed...upon turning 61."

I don't recall, but I take their word for it, and my "registrant record has been deactivated permanently."

Update:

I e-mailed mom and Kaiya last night to send vibes and let them know we were thinking of them as Kaiya was supposed head into the hospital today to prep for Feb 8th and I got this back:

"Long story - but her admission date was pushed back some.  We should hopefully know the new admit date early next week.  We'll keep you posted."
