so very refreshing to see jammed psychedelia in a new band. they do covers mostly, but obscure...
i mean other than DNB, I have not seen any "jamband" come close to getting where you know you want to go.
dave blew a fuse on the 1st song.
did i mention that mark karan was off bobby's leash. the dude is WAY better than you thought.

Bobby wanted the spotlight to
Bobby wanted the spotlight to himself. First time I saw Karan w/o Ratdog, was a sit in with Phil at the Greek and he blew me away. He continues that brilliance with Dave Alvin and The Third Mind. This band is really, really good.

Well, Karan was good in
Well, Karan was really good in Ratdog (he was the only thing about that band that I liked) and over the years he's been a lot of other places besides "Bobby's leash"; a lot of people have known for a long time how good he is.
Going through an epic cancer battle a number of years ago definitely jammed up his career and probably kept him close to home after his recovery, but he's been firing on all cylinders again for quite a while now.
If I remember correctly, he wasn't the original 2nd guitar player in The Third Mind but was just a one-off substitute for their show at HSBG. A very wise move to make him a permanent member, as beyond being a ripping rock guitarist he also really knows the open improv genre and style that the band is based on (learned while on Bob's leash?).
As much as I love Dave Alvin, open psychedelic improv is not his forte so IMO it was imperative for them to have a guitar player who really knows how to get outside the walls, and Mark Karan was the perfect choice.
Hopefully they catch on with the jamband scene. I doubt they'll ever get farther than the club/theater circuit, but it would be great if Dave picked up some jamband fans who may have not been aware of him, and Karan would get some good exposure as well.
Just a little rock 'n roll, that's all we ask.

BTW, here's a cool story Dave
BTW, here's a cool story Dave posted on Facebook yesterday. From the show you saw T?
How can you not love this guy?
"There’s an old cowboy superstition that says it’s bad luck to put your hat on a bed. I don’t know whether it’s true or not but I’ve always lived by that rule just to be safe.
I checked into a motel room in San Juan Capistrano and without thinking laid my hat on the bed. Instantly realizing my error, I quickly took my hat off the bed while praying that there must be a five second grace period for first time offenders. A half hour later, though, at soundcheck for @thethirdmind show at The Coach House, my amplifier blew a fuse and died. A new fuse fixed my amp problem but an hour later, when I got back to the motel room, the entire motel had no power after their circuits blew. I started thinking there may not be a five second grace period with the don’t put your hat on a bed rule (especially for guitar bashers).
After showering for the show in total darkness, I went to the gig and . . my amp blew the new fuse that we’d just put in and . .it died again, this time in the middle of my first solo on the first song. Embarrassed and humbled, I hastily borrowed a questionable, beat up amplifier that the club had and played the rest of what turned out to be a fine show while, not so under my breath, cursing fate, amplifiers, myself and the damn don’t put your hat on the bed rule.
After the show, though, my luck changed. One of my childhood friends, Joe Cencak, shocked the Hell out of me by walking into the dressing room. I hadn’t seen or heard from Joe since the 70s, but back when we were in grammar school, Joe and I were close pals who shared a lot of adventures, laughs and growing pains and it did my spirit good to finally see him again. It was especially nice to reminisce about the times my patient mother would drive Joe, Greg Truesdale and me to see Jimi Hendrix play live when we were just 12 year old kids. We were bonded forever by those life changing experiences.
So, all in all, perhaps there is something to that don't put your hat on the bed stuff BUT, as powerful as that bad luck may be, it damn sure can't stop a Third Mind show and it definitely can't stop two old Downey boys from smiling, laughing and getting a little misty eyed after all these years apart."

That's been my take as well, but those who have seen them live say that in the room she blends in more (kind of like what people/I have said about Donna Jean).
Still, I'd probably be more interested in this band if they lost her. Both Dave & Karan sing just fine, and at least for me less singing is more filling.

I gotta mostly agree on Jesse
I gotta mostly agree on Jesse. She makes some of the album cuts unlistenable (I have all their albums) but once I saw them live the first time, I started to come around a little bit. And hey, she's a deadhead.

i initially also did not care
i initially also did not care for her vocals on the 1st album.
LIVE she is great. she has an ethereal mesmerizing voice and when it's time to play, she steps aside and gets out of the way. i like her.
i took 3 Dave Alvin rookies. never heard of him. all 3 got their socks knocked off and also liked jessie.
i did not understand the ratdog band so only saw him like twice. i believe i saw him with phil and in some other incarnations, and thought he was really enjoyable. i had no idea he's on that level...he went toe-toe with dave all night and the interaction among the 2 was amazing. dave deferred a lot and mark just fucking exploded. dave of course was dave, and i feel that he is really getting it on the exploratory level. of course with his strength, it was a perfect foil for mark's jam playing.
Lance, indeed the post Dave made was the san juan show i saw. i kinda noticed or saw some kind of interaction during the 1st song...which was like 15mins long. being the pro he is, it really wasn't obvious.
this is a part time gig for all of them.
i believe Karan initially was hired because the european guy doesn't like to fly/travel? or something like that. Mr. Jerome drums for Richard Thompson and is one of the best live ones I've seen. He's phenomenal.
they won't get off the small theater circuit. this is part time and Dave also being a cancer survivor doesn't stray too far from home. think you'll have to travel trailhead.
anyways, if their new song selections are in the real of the creator has a master plan, I mean...the stratosphere is the limit. the other electric flag and butterfield material suits dave well.
ps, show was $35 w/ a $5 fee...being this level of musicians traveling in a van and playing for that....brother needs to charge more.

So the message here seems to be GTTS. Where have I heard that before? I wish I caught them in Ventura a couple of weeks ago, but the stars just didn't align.

Dave comes East when he's playing with Jimmie Dale Gilmore. Jimmie Dale is a favorite and a beautiful person.
It might not be news to some of you but Victor Krummenacher was the bass player for Camper Van Beethoven also an eternal favorite of mine.

victor, as I understand it, is the mastermind behind the band.
saw jimmie/dave a while back. jimmie walked through the crowd to the stage and patted me on the shoulder when he walked by. he had a really beautiful vibe about him.
maybe i should go to the fillmore.

one of my favorite things about the zone is getting turned on to new (to me) music/bands, so thanks for that and your exuberance, T
always enjoyed Karan and hoped he would have a bigger roll in PLF
looking forward to checking these guys out, but I don't see any shows listed for Third Mind... am I missing something? (I did see shows for Dave Alvin)
