Cubensis

Forums:

I think I have heard SoCal zoners mention Cubensis.  Dead cover band.  Playing for $12 at the venue closest to house.  Is thsi something that should drag me out of the house on a Sunday night?

Yes

How about Tauk?  Same scenario but on a Thursday.

Granted, I haven't lived in So Cal in decades but in the early 90s, Cubensis was our local GD band.  And they ripped.

Assuming the vibe and music are still close...  yes, well worth a night out.

I was turned on to this band by SDhead. They were real good. Go for it.

The harder you dose , the better they sound.

fun but you've heard it. if  you wanna go to phils and see a good dead band, go for it fun. but i wouldn't go too far outta my way...

This is a lots closer than Phil's, turts.  10 min pleasant bike ride. Part of the draw.

bike ride, then sure.

Haven't seen Cubensis in almost 10 years but it was a good time for a bar show. They would play Vegas a few times a year, even had some weird urban clothes fashion show break out during a setbreak at one show. One time I chatted to the lead guitarist about Marc Ford and Eddie Harsch of the Crowes sitting in with Cubensis back in the mid nineties which he seemed to appreciate the reminiscing. Nothing out of the ordinary for a gd coverband but solid.

I'm pretty sure I caught Tauk at a Hangtown Fest (smaller outer stage that is no longer starting this year) and they were a four piece funk-jamband that were pretty fun. I think they did a nice I'm So Heavy cover to close their set. I'd go to a bar show of theirs, probably pretty cheap tickets.

Speaking of Hangtown, are you guys going this year?

Cubensis - yes!

A super fun party last night at TXR with Cubensis and several guests sitting in (Barry Sless, Alex Jordan, Stu Allen, Scott Guberman, Roger McNamee).  Some entertaining guitar "dueling" (not sure what you call it when 3 or more are doing it).  Last two songs (TOO and NFA) had 9, then 10 musicians onstage (5 guitars, 2 keys, 2 drummers, and 1 bass) - totally over the top.

Cubensis also played at least a few tunes without sit-ins and had a chance to show some jamming chemistry (enjoyed Lonely and a Long Way from Home jam).

This was the first time I had seen them.

I like that they don't seem to ape the Grateful Dead, but carry the spirit.

Fantastic to reunite with dear friends in the Grate Room.  Was also cool to be able to bounce between this show and the Tom Petty tribute with Stu Allen & Friends in the bar.  As one attendee noted, "One was a dance party and the other was a wake."

Good times.

"I'd like 3 'Jerries', please..."

Yeah Johnny, I like a "cover band" better than a "tribute act".

Across......YES.  Youse guys?

Did you guys end up checking Cubensis out?

And yes, we will be back out in Mystery Meadows for more Hangtown fun Fri-Sat. Looking forward to catching up on the last year with you two.
