Curveball canceled

Forums:

Bad news. Water isn’t safe.

http://phish.com/news/curveball-forced-to-cancel/

Due to the severe flooding that occurred in Schuyler County over the past week, the local water treatment plant that services water to the Village of Watkins Glen, including the Curveball site has been contaminated and the water supply is not safe for human consumption. The New York State Department of Health has issued a statement here.

Sadly, Curveball has been cancelled.

Fans currently onsite are welcome to stay overnight; campgrounds will close at noon tomorrow.

Information on refunds will be forthcoming, and additional information will be posted as it becomes available.

A STATEMENT FROM PHISH

Dear friends, our Phish family..

The four of us are writing this from directly behind the stage at Watkins Glen. We were about to walk onstage only moments ago for our traditional soundcheck jam for Curveball when we were told the heartbreaking news that due to the unsafe water conditions in the Village of Watkins Glen, our beloved festival is being canceled.

We are still in shock. The entire site is already set up and ready to go after literally months of work by our beloved hardworking crew, many of whom have been here for weeks. Our families are here, our gear is set, our tents are up. We keep waiting for someone to come over and tell us that there is a solution, and that the festival can go on.  Unfortunately, it is not possible.

We are so terribly sorry for the inconvenience that this is causing so many of you. We hope from the bottoms of our hearts that at the very least this news will reach you before too much disruption takes place in your personal lives. We know that people traveled far, at great expense. We understand that people are missing work, and changing their schedules around.. we wish so much that there was some way that this wasn’t happening.

This summer has been absolutely joyous, with each gig building on the previous one, and we were all buzzing with excitement about Curveball. Please accept our deepest apologies for the disruption that this has caused all of you.. We wish there was something else we could say.

Thank you all from the depths of our souls for the joy that you continue to share with us every night. This has been the greatest summer we can remember.

Travel safe and know that we are as heartbroken as all of you. We are standing back here behind the stage, at our party that we’ve been planning for over a year, and we have just told that it won’t happen.  There’s just nothing we can do.

Thank you all for your understanding.

With Love,
Phish

Damn

Damn!

They were expecting a curveball but got k'd by a spitball.

I wonder why they REALLY canceled. I’m sure it has something to do with Trey again.

Thanks Obama

Bucky,

Bryen will tell us it's the deep state conspiracy.

I’m hearing the blame for the flooding is being laid directly at the feet of environmentalists. So yeah, “Thanks”, Obama indeed.

Now how am I supposed to waste my time all weekend?

everyone (well, most everyone) survived the Phish shows in Mexico... no way this is any worse.

Should have had the fest in Flint they don’t let poisoned water stop them

"the state Department of Health and Schuyler County canceled this weekend's Phish's Curveball festival at Watkins Glen."

https://www.democratandchronicle.com/story/news/2018/08/16/phish-festiva...

I just hope this makes all invloved stronger and more resolved to create joy.

I think it will make most involved react like the Dawson’s creek dude up there

Meanwhile 70,000 thousand people will be gathering for that thing in the desert in a few weeks with no water

Why?

harsh

Down With The Dysentery

Burning Man/Techie's no thanks!

Hardly Strictly will go on as scheduled.

guess thats what they meant by curveball

No, that would be pulling a fast one.

think of all of the unsold drugs sad

my friend started driving across the country already....

oh well.

Unbelievable!  Why can’t the truck in good water or tell everyone to bring their own water, I have everything packed and ready to head out early tomorrow.  WTF!!!

Sucks bad for everyone that flew in already, crap.

Aint that some bullshit. I remember this didnt stop them from doing Coventry.... when there was literal shit all over the grounds. That was a fun weekend indeed..

Different deal Ned.  I am fascinated how this all turns out $$$$ wise.  Insurance?  Where's Tony Saddler?

They should have trucked in some fresh Canadian water for everyone and had row after row of high end shitter and shower trailers for the whole bougie fucking festival crowd that is Phish. It's like a Burning Man trade show. REI/LL Bean will cosponsor the next one so this doesn't happen again.

Attention to all local promoters WAKE UP THE TIME IS NOW.  Make something happen.

This has really thrown a curveball to folks that planned to attend.

>>>This has really thrown a curveball to folks that planned to attend.

ha nice I guess it wasn’t false advertising

Money wise - the vendors will be fucked over and have the most at stake. The Phish crew will get paid. The Phish org will take a hit as those policies carry large deductibles - prob 100k.  The Tix will be refunded. People that purchased on the secondary market will be fucked.

Kids in Africa will be wearing curveball stuff soon

Phish cancelled by water??

Just not right....

WC Fields comes to mind....

some funny stuff up in this thread.

but I do feel bad for  Voodoo and others folks here that aint gonna get to go.

Jonas. Why do people who purchased in 2ndary market get screwed? They wont be able to get a refund at face?

>> I wonder why they REALLY canceled. I’m sure it has something to do with Trey again.

Are you really an asshole or just playing like one here?

Kerrville would have kept on kerrving. Rain schmain....

They can make it up to the fans by playing 15 nights at the Garden general admission!

I Find Phish Pedestrian .. Way Down On My List as Listenable

Is D Stu In A Wall Of  Shedding Tears ?

It wasn't Phish's call. When the authorities say no go, it means no go. Sounds like they conferred with the band but nobody could come up with the magic solution.

It will certainly be interesting to see how this all plays out regarding refunds and finances. Your next festival ticket will go up $3 to cover increase in cost of purchasing insurance.

Scott - the refund goes to the original purchaser of the tix.  There will no doubt be lots of unhappy people.

What a cluster fuck People came from all over

I keep thinking of the dudes in the air on their airplane on way to JFK

Uggg

((((((((((((((Vibes for jet setting custies and glampers)))))))))))))))

Right Jonas..but in a perfect world the seller would make the secondary purchase whole and then get refunded themselves no?

I just put on 12/5/99 (cranking loud), a great local show that I have fond memories of, and started drinking the kind beers that I had packed for this weekend.

Right Jonas..but in a perfect world the seller would make the secondary purchase whole and then get refunded themselves no?

Thunder calls through waterfalls
Rising tides and ocean walls
I can hear you when you sigh

Sucks for the phans, maybe they'll have an action-packed winter. Since they've already booked the venues through the end of year it prob won't change.

Phans now complaining that Trey was already seen back in NYC eating a fancy dinner at a restaurant. LOL

Fool me once...   won't bore you all with my Coventry tales.  Needless to say, it was my LAST "festival".  I even missed the lovely 8 in the desert with Sharon Jones.  I'll own that one.

Guess I'll still give the guys credit for attempting these events. Attendance and $ shows it may be worth it.

I'll stick with Tahoe, Bill Graham and my couch.

Vibes to those impacted.  I FEEL you.

Complaining? What the fuck do they expect him to do, sit around the

campground all night and cry with them?

Sorry to China and the other Zoners that got shut down.

what a bummer ...would be very upset if there (or on way) right now

>>>>Are you really an asshole or just playing like one here?

Can it be both?

You must be a big Trey fan. I’m sorry that you were offended by my speculation about him. I can’t guarantee that it won’t happen again and again though.

As a vendor that paid for a space at the Ill fated ‘shakedown fest’

i can tell you the vendors get fucked over the worst when a festival gets canceled  last minute.

feel for everyone who drove from every corner of the country for this.

what they *should* have done is moved the festival.. although I know that’s very short notice, it’s not impossible.

These guys aren't as hungry as carnies.

I'm sorry but I just understand any adult over the age of 40 who still thinks this type of thing is fun. One night in and out sure, but a whole multi night weekend?

That’s very understanding of you.

You know what I mean Bucky.  I'm too old for that shit.

Gutterball.

I was at Summer Jam 1973 at the Glen. GD, ABB, The Band. 600,000 people. No water, torrential downpours, no porta-potties, blazing hot temps, no food.

We survived somehow.

A LOT of anger out there on social media directed towards the northeast of our country right now and frankly I can see their point. The volatile summer weather plus bad karma in general has turned the northeast into an awful choice for any outdoor festival or frankly any outdoor activity in general.

We survived somehow>>>>

this.

i think there’s more to the story than we’re hearing. Potentially some hate for the phish on a local government level?

Your generation had a lot of Vietnam War veterans, Surfdead, the Phish kids are veterans of World Of Warcraft.

Advantage: Boomers

Junkball methfest.

What back water state is this in?

>>I'm sorry but I just understand any adult over the age of 40 who still thinks this type of thing is fun. One night in and out sure, but a whole multi night weekend?

Yes.   Camden x2 > DSO Atlantic City > MPP x2 was a blast.

I must have said "I'm getting to old for this shit" to myself at least 10 times in the last week.  I was bailing out on Blueball due to being tired and not looking forward to the muddy chore it would have been all weekend... 10 years ago I wouldn't have thought twice about some mud but I guess that means I'm getting old.

I still felt the pull and a friend twisted my arm last night after buying tickets on CashorTrade.   Car was packed and we were 5 mins from hitting the road.

Yooooge bummer.

>>>I was at Summer Jam 1973 at the Glen. GD, ABB, The Band. 600,000 people. No water, torrential downpours, no porta-potties, blazing hot temps, no food

Sounds like a well organized event.

The world probably should have noticed that the Boomers couldn't even manage the basics at a music festival before handing them the keys to the future. Just sayin'.

 Fly thanks for the sentiment

it’s been a fucked up night for a lot of people here

some put the whole year into this

others like me made this is their festival destination with the crew for the year

I feel for the sense of loss, there were real tears shed

Let's regroup manãna...

Molly futures are down. Buy, buy, buy!

>>>feel for the sense of loss, there were real tears shed

lol.  Pathetic.

>>I'm sorry but I just understand any adult over the age of 40 who still thinks this type of thing is fun. One night in and out sure, but a whole multi night weekend?

Just for a point of reference, do you understand it more or less than, say, a dude in his 40s who has and uses multiple socks on a dbmb?

Too bad this went down like this. I know a lot of people had planned their year around it. I am also glad that I declined an invitation earlier this week. The logistics of all the people who were traveling from points unknown and now having to rebook air, find places to stay, etc is mind-boggling as well as the extra costs involved being substantial. I am sure a good percentage are maxed out on credit cards and such and no longer have the credit to pay for rooms and such.

Got there with my crew on Thursday at noon. Was well settled in for the weekend when we got the word. Initially planned on spending the night but with the approaching weather and the number of cars leaving that were getting stuck in the mud, we broke camp in under an hour and got the hell out around 8pm. Campsite was a shit show, every other car needed a push to get out of there and total mudfest from the minute we pulled in.

Not much you can do about it but I am seriously disappointed. My friends flew in from Hawaii and North Carolina for this, so although we still get to hang for the weekend, it's a serious pisser.

interesting tweet, but not a shocking development at all. The replies to the President are great.

^ Dude thats not even the presidents real twitter handle 2. Bad karma on the East, only when people like you shit talk this side of the country, i live in an outdoor rec area that needs tourism for money, Get bent with your bullshit.

"Different deal Ned.  I am fascinated how this all turns out $$$$ wise.  Insurance?  Where's Tony Saddler?"

Not really. They had potable water, but the festival grounds had to be closed to campers because of the terrible flooding. Didnt stop the show, but certainly swallowed a lot of cars in mud. THey had to stop the stage from sinking too. I would have figured they could have fixed this by now.

Sorry about all the folks who got shut down. BIG bummer.

I have a ticket to Friday Dicks. This should be a very good show.

I just keep thinking of all the RVs loaded with drugs aimlessly driving around the country side.

Righteous post from Phish.net

”I would like to share an idea and hopefully some of you will like the idea and join me. To anyone who has flown in to this area and has to wait until Monday or Tuesday I want to open up my home to you and allow you to stay here in my house for the next few days, free of charge. I have 2 or 3 bedrooms available and am in a beautiful town just outside the city of Rochester. I know if it were me I would be struggling to figure out what to do. Hopefully others who read this will do the same to offer whatever space you have available and we can help some phans through this next few days. Even if you cant offer any space if you like this idea please share this post and put it out there in any other way you can. To the band and crew: if you happen to see this post and if you think it is a good idea please post it on your site as well as social media and hopefully it will really get the Curveball rolling and reach more and more people who can offer up some hospitality and help these folks out. Anyone needing a place please message me for more details and I will get a few of you out of the weather and out of the financial burden of being blindsided by this and suddenly having to find a hotel and pay for 4 or 5 nights. If you have just read this please make the same offer and/or share it. THANK YOU!!!”

Dick's should be insane. Back in 1992 the Variety Playhouse flooded during the show and Trey says "we're gonna make it up to you, we're gonna make it up to you"

They come back to the Roxy in Atlanta the next year and play the first ever 3 night run on tour which is one of the greatest runs they ever did. There's always hope I guess.

Trey hates you...

This^^^^

People that bought on the secondary market definitely get their money back. Stubhub for instance immediately credits you back. I do feel bad for the vendors and the people that laid out a lot to attend

Hahahaha here’s Hitler finding out that curveball was canceled https://www.captiongenerator.com/1068502/Adolf-reacts-to-Curveball-cance...

LOL spoken like a true shithead! Congratulations!

I hope you don't think the Grateful Dead liked deadheads because it's pretty clear they came to loathe them.

Time to move on people

Watkins Glenn was probably just looking for any reason to cancel a three day festival of bumdrubk drugbandwagoners and bumhippies fymbling around town.

they much prefer a bunch of bumass drunk rednecks who like racing there.

Hey, Slack. What’s whiter, a three day phish Festival or three days of nascar racing?

Bump for answers

absolutely!

onward and upward to Dicks and Hampton!

100.

We were there.  We arrived mid day on Thursday and got fully set up in the RV section before news spread through the campsite.  Pretty unbelievable.  I've never been part of  a bigger collective group disappointment in my life.  I feel bad for the folks who flew in and/or drove many many miles to get there.  Crushing.  We drove about 9 hours each way.  Also feel bad for all the vendors and the loss they must be taking from food prep going to waste.

That sucks.  How did your hear the news?   Did they kick you out?   How did the crowd react?

Think of all the unused glowsticks.

Hi Ken.

>>How did your hear the news?

My friends and I were going to check out the soundcheck and I realized I didn't have my shoes on so I peeled back to camp and was told the news by my friend Heather.  At first I thought she was joking but the look on her friend's face said it all.

>> Did they kick you out?

They let us camp for the night... had to be out by noon the next day.

>>How did the crowd react?

I think everyone was just so blown away.  I ended up sleeping all night so I could be in shape to drive but from what I gathered it was still a party for the night; often times folks forgetting that there were, in fact, no festivities the next day.  No one was being malicious or anything really.  In the am, though, a group of folks thought it would be funny to shit ON the toilet seats of every portapotty in our section.  That just doesn't make sense to me..ya know, stickin' it to the MAN by ruining the PEOPLES toilets.  YEA!

What a crazy happening that was. Everyone was equally shocked and dismayed for sure. They key seemed to be how you handled it and what you did. Fortunately, we were already in the campground so could experience the scene. After the initial shock, the vibe in the campground began to swell and before long, the party began. By nightfall the campground we were in was in full party mode and was quite electric. Before long, some people were up in the common area near the entrance to the concert venue, DJ set up and a full-on party and gigfest ensued for most of the night!  It was a great vibe and major party with security and cops letting it all go down.  Our crew never gave up and we all ripped well pastdaybreak.  As Friday morning dawned, there was an incredibly somber vibe throughout the entire campground. It was eerily quiet, people slept in and slowly got up and broke down camp with very little conversation. The night party was over and the full reality set in. People steadily left the campgrounds.

We made the decision to not go home and instead find a scene as we knew plenty of people would not give up. Sure enough, before long we got word of a pop-up festival about an hour away they were calling Knuckleball. (Perfect name!)  Without many details, people slowly began to decide to check it out. As people arrived at the venue, word trickled out that it was a really nice venue and scene and incredibly, it appeared there would be some good music, there was infrastructure, portapotties, etc.  It was truly amazing that someone could pull such a thing together in such a short amount of time. All said and done, I'm guessing almost 1,000 people were there. Bands played until about 2am, the vibe was fantastic, people were gigging and partying and hanging, etc. The venue was grass with very little mud or wet ground, was surrounded by trees with a super cool scene going on in the woods next to the barn where the stage was, a campfire blazed all night, and the vibe was 100% positive and kinde!  This was a very unique experience and while it certainly did not make up for the canceling of Curveball, it saved the weekend from being a 100% disaster ad provided a truly memorable experience. Anyone who didn't "quit" was rewarded. Sunday we drove the near Cooperstown and camped in a nice State Park on a lake and wound things down on night 4 after 3 raging nights with a nice mellow night of camping and eating but still filled with gut-wrenching laughter and tour silliness.

Just thought I'd share our experience.

>>they were calling Knuckleball

My friends in Electro Politics played and had a great time.

More glass half full...

“Dick’s Webcasts: Starting tomorrow, all Curveball ticket holders will be able to redeem the code on their wristbands at livephish.com/redeem to watch the webcast of all three shows at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO over Labor Day Weekend.”

I got a refund, so that’s good.

Same.  Went to fixing the damage some inbred did to my car last week via hit and run.
