Dark Star N.Y. Time's

Cool thnx

Went to at least two of those top 10 performances

it kind of changed my life       No not being on tour or a big druggie just kind of a nice form of enlightenment and belonging

star Stephen eleven Lovelight = mind blown

Nice article.  Took me 18 years to get my first Dark Star.  Started at Baltimore1972 and it took until RFK 1990 (79 shows later) to hear Dark Star live.

But, I got some grate Other Ones and the only Dew of 1978 (William and Mary) and 1979 (Cap Centre).

I never saw the dead do dark star. I've seen Phil do it once or twice, and maybe furthur. Like those old 70's jams, anything from Fillmore west .

Eddie

My first Dark Star as well.... long wait as  got on the bus in 1980 on the east coast

I saw 2: Deer Creek 6-23-93 & MSG 9-22-93. They were both one verse darkstars, although the one in nyc teased verse 2 coming out of space going into wharf rat. Neither had the traditional intro instead arriving at the song coming out of a jam. 9-22 was less a surprise. ..the Deer Creek was shorter but coming out of space after a really long intense terrapin jam.

I also saw 9-6-91 Richfield there was a more developed darkstar jam no lyrics but full instrumental verse.

A couple I just missed were 3-20-92, darkstar jam 6-22-91 Chicago,  6-8-92 Richfield and 3-16-94 Rosemont darkstar.

I chased the darkstar during my early phil years..seeming to just miss...I had to drive out to denver/vail spring 02 finally got it 4-4-02 sweet shows.

The only one I saw by the actual GD that I remember was 7.13.84 @ the Greek.

BTW Eddie-I was at William and Mary for that show. Good times. We had a big jam going on the steps outside in the afternoon.

It was a slow winter day, and I had just left the Anthology Film Archives in New York after a screening of “Andy Warhol’s Frankenstein.” It had seemed like a long afternoon, what with the beheadings and the orgies and whatnot. Curiously, Baron von Frankenstein insisted on calling his creature’s nose its “nasum.” Also, he observed that “in order to know death, you have to” — let’s paraphrase here — “know life in the gallbladder.”

I stood there on Second Avenue, more than a little discombobulated.

-------

That's terrible writing.

Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of the Fillmore West performance of Dark Star and Stephen that are on the Live Dead album.

Finally got one at the Nightfall of Diamonds 10/16/89 and 5 more.

RFK '90 was my favorite of those, probably the best I've heard since 10/18/74 at Winterland.

Wow, 22 years after Jerry passed, The New York Times permits an Opinion Piece truly capturing the essence of the improvisational masterpiece known as Dark Star. Gotta love it! The only thing I would add to it if I could would be to describe the amazing 1990 Summer Tour in which Dark Star cropped up and percolated over the course of a dozen different shows across the landscape of the American continent, driving touring fans to unprecented levels of delight, confusion and even consternation, as the band teased the tune and closing 2nd verse ad infinitum until they finally closed it out at Shoreline Ampitheatre, having begun the epic journey back at Giants Stadium a couple of weeks earlier.
What a fuckin’ band!!!

...

The 10-9-89 return of Dark Star in Hampton has to make any top 10 list. It's impossible for me not to get a bit of a chill hearing the crowd reaction after the opening notes, and I've heard that version countless times.

And what that list fails to mention about the 10-26-89 Dark Star in Miami is that it's most fucked up, scariest music the Dead ever played. Years ago someone on the Archive compared it to being trapped inside a pinball machine on acid. Seems like a pretty apt comparison, imo.

My first was The Warlocks one at Hampton, and I think I ended up seeing a dozen or so.  It became almost commonplace.

That was 1991 ezwind...but the shoreline,  8-16-91 was verse one only. Plus they kept teasing it fall 91e.g 9-6-91, 9-8-91...

Ha ha, oops, g-reg! Ah well, never let the truth get in the way of a good story ! laugh

Damn fried synapses!  devil

>RFK '90 was my favorite of those<

that one was killer in the pouring rain.

That one went on and on and on.

I remember a Dark Star fakeout in Cleveland.

They played it too much.  It stopped being that special.

7-12-90 is my favorite late era version. .

10/26/1989

WOW

Fish and I were deciding to dose or go booming

I suggested both that night

Wise move

I would have traded 5 Dark Stars for 1 St. Stephen>The Eleven with Jerry.

Darkstar basher :)

Only saw two.  Both with Branford.

12/31/81 was fun...not only did they play a 4th set, but opened it with Dark Star...smiles all around!!

10/16/89 was my first dark star, amazing second set, Bobs bday, and both a playing and a dark star sandwich.  Also Attics was making a comeback, crowd went wild.

Enjoy your next dose with (nearly) every Dark Star jam from 1972 melded into one 10-hour song.

Grateful Dead - 30 Dark Star performances from 1972 mixed into a single recording!

Length: 11hrs 42min

My goal was to merge all Dark Star performances from 1972 as if it was one very long performance with a marathon jam in the middle. For many Grateful Dead fans, experiencing a near 12hr jam like this would be a dream come true.

My process:

Drop all Dark Star recordings into software

Locate all vocal sections and remove them - except the first 1st verse vocal section and the last 2nd verse vocal section

Taking all jam parts and mixing them together - in some cases minutes were cut to get to a location that would cross fade well

Keep it as pure as possible - no remixing/re-arrangements

The band rarely sang the 2nd verse in 1972, and the last performance of the year did not include a 2nd verse. In order to close out the recording as I planned, I used the last 2nd verse at the end, which is from 7/26/1972.

I left one Dark Star out, which is from 10/23/1972. The quality was very poor. It was a boomy audience recording. If anyone can find a good recording of this Dark Star, please let me know, and I'll update the mix

Version 2:  This is V2 of the 1972 Dark Star mix. It has the following benefits over the V1 mix:

better mixing - I reviewed every cross fade and adjusted many

correct order - a listener pointed out that the V1 had some out of order

added missing Dark Stars - added 4 of the 5, one was very poor in quality and not included

includes Verse 2 vocals

1hr 42min longer!

I only got through about half of it and plan to finish later.  Digging it thus far.

Who considers St Stephen a ballad though?
