Dave Alvin

Forums:

Dave Alvin's music is new to me and I have been hearing a bunch of catchy blues/western tunes of his lately.

Dave is playing a small theater my me in Bayshore, NY in April that I want to go to.

Just found this video:

Dave Alvin, David Hidalgo, Los Cenzontles, Max Baca, Pete Sears - Ashgrove, 2/16/2017

one of the best guitar players in the country, and an underrated song writer.

i try to catch him one a year, which is easy because he plays a ton here.

go to the show, it will not suck

Thank you very much Turtle.

Just grabbed tickets to the 4/21/17 Boulton Center, Bayshore NY show. (900 seat theater with 25 seats left)

I busted a move right away realizing Dave Alvin never plays around here and love every thing I have heard of his the last few months.

right on!

he's one smooth cool cat.

thanks for that killer video! shit was HOT

he is amazing in ANY of his incarnations.

These guy are great! Thank you!

yeah i reeeeeallly hope that los cenzontles configuration tours, and put pete on bass!

I love Dave he plays around here often in all types of bands.

Last time I saw him he was with his brother.

Enjoy the show.

^Amazing. Love that they're playing in someone's house.

He's fucking great.

"Great" is used a lot, and a lot by me, but really...

Dave Alvin is fucking GREAT.

I try hard to see him any/every time he comes to my region and am almost never disappointed.

I actually don't care much for the deal he's been doing lately with his brother, but if that's what you're seeing it will still be damn good. I just prefer Dave with his own band playing his own songs.

I'm actually curious what configuration you'll be seeing. He plays solo shows as well, and while he doesn't rip on electric guitar at those shows they are a great way to see what a talented and very cool cat he is.

Hi Lance. Thanks for the tipper.

It's Dave Alvin & the Guilty Ones (with special guest Carloyn Wonderland) 4/21/17 Bayshore, NY

i concur

Sorry if you object Tom, but you spoke my words perfectly. So I will just repeat them.

He's fucking great.

Perfect.     And GO TO THE SHOW!           Yeah, The Guilty Ones is the shit.

I feel so used.

He's in the lineup for Wilco's Solid Sound Fest:

I concur Dave Alvin is fucking great ... I also loved the two shows I've seen with his brother fairly recently . The drummer from the Guilty Men years, Bobby Lloyd Hicks , recently passed . I saw him a couple of years ago drumming with the New NRBQ - he was a huge fan and loved being able to play w/Terry Adams . Seriously considering going to see DA a couple hours away midweek next month (Iron Horse in Northampton, Ma. ) . First saw Dave at the Paradise in Boston supporting his first solo album , Romeo's Escape . '87 ish ...

I liked the show I saw with his brother, but wouldn't trade that for his work on his own. Have a great time!

He should do a Christmas album with the Chipmunks, his deep vocals would contrast nicely with their falsetto style, plus the name thing of course.

I've seen Dave with The Original Blasters (minus Lee Allen, RIP), with The Knitters (basically X, with Dave subbing for Billy Zoom, John Doe on acoustic rhythm guitar, and an upright bassist), and solo (a gig at McCabe's with the I See Hawks In L.A. guys backing him up).  They were all excellent.  The man is a player.

He also can tell some pretty funny stories.  At the McCabe's show, a bunch of ladies that knew him and Phil from their childhood days in Downey showed up and got him talking.  This was when things were a little icy between the brothers.  After a while, he said, "alright, I should probably shut up, don't want to get Phil mad at me.  Geez, this is turning into a Greg Brown show."

Never seen a bad Dave show.  I usually prefer the electric stuff but I once caught a great acoustic show with him and Cindy Cashdollar at the local library.

Thanks everybody. I'm psyched!  Row P Seat 1.

hes takin hildago's place for a few shows in los lobos

Any favorite studio Dave Alvin album/Cds anyone recommend?

His new CD with his brother Phil is getting some airplay and sounds very good.

Dave & Phil Alvin's Lost Time is a fantastic album.

I was super fortunate to be able to do sound for him at a rare (for Dave) house concert late last year...in a 2 car garage in SB.  Nice guy with a dry wit.

Cools stuff John. That was electric?

Just scored a Blaster's Live in London LP in the Amoeba dollar bin...

always hit their sets at the HSBGF

Absolutely fantastic show tonight with Carolyn Wonderland opening for Dave Alvin tonight in Bayshore, NY

Carolyn Wonderland totally blew me away. Easley one of the best guitar players I have seen in my life. See her if you can.

She does a killer version of The Band's "Don't Do It" and closed the show with Freddie King's "Palace of the King".

Dave Alvin and the Guilty Ones put on a superb show and I'm now a huge fan!!

Thanks to everyone on this thread for the Dave Alvin input and stories.

The guy brings it. Great story teller too. Love the song Ashgrove!

A great comeback to a great thread.

There's nothin' like a little rock 'n roll!

It's all we ask.

Thanks Lance.
