As a huge Neil fan and an admitted outsider (but also possessing just a little inside knowledge as well) I'd say that observing the way Neil has conducted his career and his life it's not a reach to think Cros is correct.
Also, that statement in print is basic and very inflammatory, I'm assuming that if pushed deeper on it Crosby would be a little more detailed on exactly what he meant.
Still, Neil always has done exactly what Neil wants, and Neil gets exactly what Neil wants. Nothing necessarily wrong with that, he's earned everything he's gotten, but he is pretty self-focused.
I've often thought his actions suggest a touch of the autistic, which would explain many things.
>>>Farm Aid...Bridge School<<<
Wonderful events, but all Neil has ever done for either of those is show up and play.
And as soon as he moved to SoCal and it got sticky with his ex-wife (who always was the mover on the Bridge School & the benefits) the Bridge shows ended and the school had to find other funding.
No criticism to any of that, just the way it went.
Maybe this is some of the selfish Crosby's referring to,,, (from Nash's recent book) -
After the Gold Rush
Nash captured this photo of Neil Young when CSNY was rehearsing for Déjà Vu at Stills’ home in Los Angeles. “It wasn’t until many years later that I found out that Neil would come to Stephen’s house, we’d rehearse for three or four hours, he would leave, and he would go to the studio and start making After the Gold Rush,” Nash says. “I have a feeling that in that shot, Neil is rehearsing a song he is going to record later for [that album].”
>>>>Wonderful events, but all Neil has ever done for either of those is show up and play<<<<
He is on the Board of Directors for Farm Aid and is listed, along with Peggy Young, as the organizer of the bridge school benefit concerts. So you're saying that he is just a figurehead?
Never saw CSNY. The Stills Young tour was fucking fantastic, but that was many years ago. The Blue Notes was also pretty damn good,,, but that solo acoustic tour was rough, thank God Dick Dale played later that night at Toads to get me back to normal. Since then if it ain't Crazy Horse, I have no need of Neil. And with Poncho's retirement I'll probably never see Neil again. Poncho was The Man.
The Horse Bridgeport with Patty Smith 2012 was the last time I saw Neil, phenomenal. Before that SPAC + Hartford Greendale, also superb. Nothing he's done since excites me enough to go see him.
Bless that Crosby, I've always had an affinity towards magnificent fuck ups,, you can include Brent in there too.
I'm saying that he's the star, so he generates the interest and gets all the credit while others do all the work.
Elliott Roberts did all the legwork on booking the acts for the Bridge School Benefits, a staff hired by Peggy did all the legwork on logistics (hotels, travel, etc.) BGP/Live Nation/Shoreline did all the operational legwork, Bridge School staff did all the advertising.
Neil made a few phone calls and played brilliant music at the shows.
The school itself was Peggy's idea, the shows were her idea, her passion for the school kept it all going.
Hell, even the big party they always had at their ranch the Friday night before the events was Peggy's idea (I was so close to being invited once or twice... damn you fate!)
It WAS Neil's idea to make the shows all acoustic. Atta' boy Neil.
Don't get me wrong, I love Neil, I love David Crosby on his own, I love CSN, I love CSN&Y. I've seen them all multiple times and would see any grouping of those guys again.
However, with a few notable exceptions, the best shows of any grouping of those guys I've seen have been the Crosby/Nash bands.
A bit more spare but more focused, and still very rockin' on most of the same songs.
Stills is good and he brings something unique to the party as well, but it's really Crosby & Nash that have the magical harmony.

Not that anyone cares Cept old man l l t d but there's some pretty interesting history
On April Fools Day, 1917, a hold-up was staged on an employee who was working alone. The lodge burned to the ground, but was rebuilt the next year (possibly using insurance money). Legend has it that Cavalli operated Bonzagni’s not only as a bordello and speakeasy, but that there were various tunnels connected to an underground storage for whiskey, used by other speakeasies all over the San Francisco peninsula during Prohibition.
The property changed hands several times before Tony Fodera took over in 1931. He ran the place for a short time and then planted three dozen sticks of dynamite to blow it up and collect insurance. The dynamite failed to go off. Somehow he got caught and spent some time in prison.
Sometime around 1945, Grace and Mac McCarty took over and erected a sign out front: Boots and Saddle. From the late 1940s to the early 1960s Boots was known for Saturday afternoon jazz concerts. Live music continued in the following two decades, local Neil Young would play unannounced often during the 1970s.
I didn't get around to seeing the full lineup till 74. Can't recall seeing Nash solo ever? Have seen Cros plenty of times, saw Neil the most and the one Stills solo was 77 and it was an impeccable performance, stunning truth be told.
Cameras where rolling and Cros has an ego, he can also be a shit stirrer diva etc. I have been around Neil, I think strong-willed and lacks patience at times should be footnotes to selfish.
Bottom line is we are lucky they put out what they did, individually and collectively.

Crosby has put out five quality records in seven years.
Young has established himself as an important musician but he never joined a band he couldn't wait to quit.

Not that anyone cares Cept

Croz keeps making music I like. What I've heard of the most recent, I've liked before recognizing it as Croz.

I didn't get around to seeing
I didn't get around to seeing the full lineup till 74. Can't recall seeing Nash solo ever? Have seen Cros plenty of times, saw Neil the most and the one Stills solo was 77 and it was an impeccable performance, stunning truth be told.
Cameras where rolling and Cros has an ego, he can also be a shit stirrer diva etc. I have been around Neil, I think strong-willed and lacks patience at times should be footnotes to selfish.
Bottom line is we are lucky they put out what they did, individually and collectively.
