Amazing news from California Kind and David Nelson.
The recent fires that have ravaged our area have touched us all. This event, with California Kind, is going to provide another opportunity to benefit the fire victims. There will be some very special guests joining us to help raise funds for the cause including David Nelson, who has been dealing with his own serious health issues. This will be David's first performance in over a year and likely his only one for quite some time, as he continues to focus on his recovery. We hope you’ll join us for this special event, show some love for David, and for all of our friends and family that have been affected by the fires. A percentage of the door will be going to help our northern California musicians affected by the tragedy.

Great to hear he is well enough to play, even just this one show for now.

((( David )))

Great to hear he's at least feeling well enough to play one show. Keep healing Mr. Nelson.

Good news I guess, but personally I'd prefer he just deal with his health right now. I for one can wait for the triumphant and 100 % healthy return of the DNB.

I'm gonna be at Hangtown on the 28th, otherwise I'd be at this gig

I agree w/ Hounder... it's GREAT that David feels well enough to make an appearance, but I'd rather have him focus on his recovery for the time being

I'll be seeing California Kind -- without David, of course -- on Nov. 7 at Humbrews in Arcata

 CA Kind poster_Oct.-Nov. 2017_incl. Humbrews 11-7-17.jpg

I bet this show will raise David's spirits and all the hugs will give him healing benefits!

Wish we could be there.... only going to Portland show right now.

Speaking of Portland show, the way the theater advertised it in the local weekly, it looks like GBB is headliner.... anyone got info on this? They're a nice little local cover band, but was thinking that they would be openingfor California Kind....

David.PNG

I guess I thought GBB would be opening for CK, too.

Right, Judit? Did you see the Star Theater's ad in the latest Willamette Week? California Kind's name is so tiny, below GBB, it's hard to read!

According to the venue's website, California Kind is indeed opening up for GBB.  However, when GBB has played with Sless, Molo, etc. in the past (either with DNB or Moonalice) there were plenty of sit ins as if there was one big mixed band all night.

That show is the same night as the second annual Gram Parsons tribute at the Mission Theater.  Would like to try and hit both.

yay, our leader.

Thanks, Ken. Now I really want to go to the Eugene show!

Soon Come !! Freak Freely Everybody !!!

Good news. Happy to hear David is feeling well enough to perform. Hopefully the first of many DNB gigs in the near future...

FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

what is GBB?

going to buy tix 2morrow, cant wait! was thinking about heading up to the crazy horse but im for sure going to hit the SR show if it means i get sol food and david nelson

Fantastic News !!

Bravo,  Mr. Nelson.

Nice to hear you're healing up Well.

>>>>What is GBB

>>>>Garcia Birthday Band

Yeah.   The McMenamins throw a Jerry Garcia birthday bash out at the Edgefield every year, which has featured the Freak Mountain Ramblers, March 4 Marching Band, and a rotating collection of local musicians playing Grateful Dead music.   Eventually, some of those musicians formed the Garcia Birthday Band as a full time, GD cover band.   They are now sort of the McMenamins house GD band and play their various pubs, hotels, and venues pretty frequently.  The band features former Kingfish/NRPS drummer Arthur Steinhorn and bass player and former Zoner Scotty G, who I don't think made the transition to Viva  (I assume will chime in if he did and is just lurking).

Also former Zoner (reviews) Peter Bach has been on GBB guitar for awhile. They also play in Eugene every so often. Peter Bach used to play in the very good Eugene band, 9 Days Wonder.

Miss 9 Days Wonder soooo much!

California Kind wrote me via FB and said that they are indeed the opening band in Portland on Nov. 4, and they will play a 90-minute set beginning at 9 p.m...

LLOLLO, I love your follow-through. Thanks for the info

LOL, thanks Judit! I will still go to the Portland show (likely for the first act) but may just surprise you at the Eugene show.... you're going, I hope?

I Said Months Ago Nelson Would Play In October.... I Was Right ! yes

Wish I could go!  Just yesterday I got a Fillmore poster for New Riders from back in the day(71). Jerry was on pedal steel I think. Everything is coming up David!  Healing wishes for the MAN.

Yes, I'm going to the Eugene show, still planning on Portland depending on the weather. I want to see my grandkids.

So is this Garcia Birthday Band playing the show in Marin on Saturday, or is it just the Kind band w/ a Nelson sit-in that night?

Thinking about coming down for this. Any Zoner meet-up in the works?

^Let's do it, Surfdead!

I wish. Not in the cards.

I was only talking about the Eugene show. Sorry.

Haven't heard or made any plans for a meet-up, but I'd like to at least spend a little time with you.

>>>GBB is just in Portland, I think.

great news! thanks for doing the detective work on that, zooey! here's hoping the full DNB contingent comes out of the woodwork for this one, its been awhile.

So cool.

Why cant my JCC have great events like this?

http://www.marinjcc.org/index.php?src=events&category=Performing%20Arts&...

I've never been to the Kanbar Center.

The notice says that reserved seats are being assigned in order of purchase.  Is this just for the tables, or is the entire show seated?

I'm kinda hoping to dance around like a... well, like a Maniac.

Reserved seats are just for the tables. There are 2 price levels. The lower price is standing GA.

I think you can dance like a Maniac no matter which ticket you buy, though smiley

Glad Mr Nelson is feeling up to giggin again!

Won't be able to make that show, but will hopefully see some of yas at moldy DonQ's the next night.

When does MDQ's change over to classy steakhouse?

After. 3-4 cocktails

Wowser!

Holy F*#K BALLS!!!

Should be a special night.

I'm not as big a DNB fan as others but I have a ticket to this and am expecting a good time to be had.

David Nelson is a very cool dude, a local legend (even if almost nobody knows who he is) and I'm happy to support him now.

Don't steal my costume, Woz.

LOL Zooey!

I'll be going as a '70s dead head.

Jeans & a shirt, with normal shoes.

well, we are out, the daughter just informed us she will be having a Halloween get together at out house on Saturday night, so no rock & roll music for us old folks:(...Kids today just don't understand......and I had the same costume as Lance planned:)

Seeing a (Doug Clifton) video on Facebook of Nelson singing Garden of Eden tonight - he looks and sounds great! I'm looking forward to reports from folks who were there tonight.

The show was fantastic!

That was a top dollar DNB set for sure.

Lots of great people and lots of fun had all around.

David looks REAL good.

And he sounded great too.

And how cool is that?

It's really amazing how much better those other players are when they're playing behind David Nelson.

It's a trippy thing.

That was a little rock 'n roll tonight.

And a little bit more.

Far out!

so nice to hear.Positive Irations ye-ah!

unrelated, but does McMenamins still sell Terminator Stout?

Go David!

Wish he was in for the OR shows  sad

But yes, go David!  smiley

Great show. First it was California Kind who were very strong. Then Mookie joined them & as much as I like Rob, I felt he was sort of overpowering Mookie & I would have preferred Mookie alone.

Then David joined them & the fun began.

Intermission & Murphy spoke & then Wavy Gravy spoke.

Then it was a full set of the David Nelson band. Happiness all around.

Then everyone was on stage, except Wavy, & David spoke positively about his disease process & the gave Tribute to Fats Domino & the band, with Katie singing the lead, performed "Walking To New Orleans" with Rob, Mookie, David, Pete, & Katie all singing the chorus.

3 full sets.

I am happy & I buzzed home without incident.

DAVID IS BACK

Like a Phoenix arising from the ashes.

Glory be.

Hi crabneesh, thanks for the review.  Sounds like a great way to start David's comeback! How is Wavy doing these days?

Awesome!  thanks for filling us in crabneesh

He left out quite a few technical glitches and an exploding sound system, but other than that it was all good.

Sweet venue and excellent show - But  damn, there were a few buzz killing moments with the sound system.

A mighty fine time at the JCC.

Venue was a bit odd but accomodating.

The outside patio was refreshing, and the bar was pouring stiff drinks.

CA Kind was potent and offered both concise and jammed out explorations.

The Nelson Band was at full strength and sounded great - especially Nelson!

The only detractor at this great party was that the PA was terrible - constant glitches, drop outs and late in the show, a horrendous full system (loud and obnoxious) audible crash mid-song.

The crowd was joyous, costumed and having a blast - I just wonder why there was no costume contest?

Here's a few I capped - more to follow!

heart Words can't express ....

so much joy and palpable love on  that stage

within the David Nelson band

spilling over the audience and washing over us like a warm blanket of comfort and love   The disciples were rapturous and glowing

David makes them 10x better (more, than 10 and mookie to these ears way better)

close to tears many times, and on my knees occasionally,  stunned by how much this experience means to me, and cherishing every second one more time because we know that anytime it could be the last.   Live to the fullest and squeeze every drop out of every second

That Magic twinkle in Davids eye erupted several times. The B bender blasting it's sweet gooeyness is in perfect intonation and syncopation.  He was home and he was with his family the Ohana

the sound was pretty sweet for the hoodie  Mafia

I wouldn't of missed it for anything in the world

we are so fucking blessed to be so connected and part of something that is bigger than all of us and bigger than all of us combined

Totally went to church last night in the Jewish Community Center, God bless rock 'n' roll God bless David Nelson and together for a split second in eternity  we were indeed in the garden of Eden , yea

That was the embodiment of what a rock 'n' roll experience can be

I am so happy to read everything about last night (except the sound system) - I know it meant so much to be there, but second best is reading about it and hearing and seeing it through the videos. There are some great pics on Facebook, too.

I was at Jerry's first comeback show at the Stone in 1986 and I will never forget my emotions welling up when he walked on stage. I imagine it must have been similar to see David.

Long live David, long live the music!

killer!

nice to hear!

Great review LLTD!

So wish I could have been there.

But just knowing that it happened - almost as good as being there.

Tell budgirl we saved her a suite spot :-)

fucking awesome.

goosebumps. thanks for the videos.

Thanks for the videos.

David's solo in Walking to New Orleans really got to me.

Powerful stuff.

> Totally went to church last night in the Jewish Community Center, God bless rock 'n' roll God bless David Nelson and together for a split second in eternity  we were indeed in the garden of Eden , yea  <

Well said Joel!

I think Joel liked the show.

And I sort of enjoyed that epic PA explosion near the end. It was a wall of sound meltdown that stopped the band for just a second, and then they just started back into the song. A David Nelson bomb.

The venue was cool and very nice, but the room itself had such a high ceiling that along with the funky little PA the sound was boomy, but it got better the closer I got to the stage, and overall the event had that low-key, sort of amateurish but very friendly small show energy that's nice in this corporate venue era.

How long has it been since Nelson has been on a stage? He sure seemed happy to be up there. He was as animated as I can remember seeing him. It was fun.

Ultimately I went in wondering if this was going to be a triumphant return to the stage or a sad farewell performance/living tribute type deal that happens sometimes with folks who are sick.

Last night was absolutely the former, and that made it a celebration.

Thoroughly concur Lance!
Cool to hang for a few and viva DNB!

It is so wonderful to see David singing and playing great

Yeah Treble, I enjoyed our set break hang, and that conversation we had with that 24-year-old chickie was a hoot.

Much of the fun for me was seeing so many people I know, and I was thinking of & missing a few who weren't there but should have been, not the least of which was Eddieboy, who certainly would have been there with tears in his eyes.

I kept thinking I saw him. Who knows, maybe I did.

GLAD It Was A FUN Time !   thanks For The Vids !yes

"thanks for the party dad"

Nice review, LLTD.

I was in tears throughout Rocky Road Blues.

thanks so much for capturing and sharing the videos treble!

Saw a few familiar faces in the audience.

I LIKE TO SHARE....
I make zero money at this.
This music is not mine to profit from.
(I'd love some free tickets but otherwise - it's a community minded gift on my part to cap vids...)
~Enjoy!~

Treble's videos are the best because he actually knows which guitar player is playing a solo and focuses on the correct players at the correct times.

Plus he avoids the nose-hair closeups that virtually all amateur & professional camera operators & directors always think is the constant money shot.

Good work as usual Ted.

Gracias Lance!

I have no skills - I just love witnessing great shows and jams and I try to be steady....

Capping vids allows me to lmore deeply absorb the essence of jams after they happen.
(It's also not a bad way to cop licks!)

Sharing this stuff is just the gravy of passing on to my community -  great musician's making great music!

Bump for the the return of David Nelson! FUCK YEAH ZONAHS!

Treb

You copping from that sears fellow?

wear black!
