Days Between

Forums:

I'm kind of lukewarm to the song. I don't listen to shows from that era, and I didn't see too many shows then either.

So, what are some of the stellar ones that I should listen to?

The last great Hunter/Garcia ballad...  only saw one live, at Autzen Stadium (Eugene) in 93;

I  love this tune. Even post Jerry- though not as good naturally.  2003 "the Dead" at Red Rocks was when I realized the tune stood the test of time.  When Jerry played it, the guitar solo could express a lot of emotion, almost more than the vocals. Powerful tune if you listen good. Love the way it creeped into and out of a set.

Stark and beautiful Hunter Garcia ballad. It spoke to me.

I'm listening to the one from the new movie soundtrack now.  10/18/94

Sounds pretty good!

I actually enjoyed Bob doing it with Furthur. Got pretty heavy, lot of emotion.

My fave version is by Who Knows?

Not kidding.

This thread needs lyrics.

There were days, and there were days
And there were days between
Summer flies and August dies
The world grows dark and mean
Comes the shimmer of the moon
On black infested trees
The singing man is at his song
The holy on their knees
The reckless are out wrecking
The timid plead their pleas
No one knows much more of this
Than anyone can see
Anyone can see

There were days, and there were days
And there were days besides
When phantom ships with phantom sails
Set to sea on phantom tides
Comes the lightning of the sun
On bright unfocused eyes
The blue of yet another day
A springtime wet with sighs
A hopeful candle lingers
In the land of lullabies
Where headless horsemen vanish
With wild and lonely cries
Lonely cries

There were days, and there were days
And there were days I know
When all we ever wanted
Was to learn and love and grow
Once we grew into our shoes
We told them where to go
Walked halfway around the world
On promise of the glow
Stood upon a mountain top
Walked barefoot in the snow
Gave the best we had to give
How much we'll never know
We'll never know

There were days, and there were days
And there were days between
Polished like a golden bowl
The finest ever seen
Hearts of Summer held in trust
Still tender young and green
Left on shelves collecting dust
Not knowing what they mean
Valentines of flesh and blood
As soft as velveteen
Hoping love would not forsake
The days that lie between
Lie between

i can't stand it.

I'm trying. It's pretty slow and plodding. I think I like Thom's version a bit better than the Autzen.

>>>>>The last great Hunter/Garcia ballad...

meh, it may be the last but for my money the last great one was Standing On The Moon.

I saw these.

I like the song and enjoyed both performances.

You decide which you like the best.

I'll stay steadfast in my stance that this song blows. I particularly can't take the repeated theme at the end of every verse.  It's almost that in the end that they, Garcia and Hunter, were writing/arranging to each others weaknesses.

#dirge

I'm also a big fan of the song both pre and post Jerry. Here's one I caught in San Diego before I knew I would end up living in SD. Traveled from Manila PI's to this and the first night as well as the LA shows Dec 93

Feel Like A Stranger, Ramble On Rose, The Same Thing, Brown Eyed Women, Broken Arrow, Easy Answers, Mississippi Half Step Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds, Woman Are Smarter, Way To Go Home, Eyes Of The World, Drums-> Space-> The Last Time-> The Days Between-> Throwing Stones, E: Liberty

It was heavy and gloomy.  I preferred So Many Roads, Lazy River Road and Liberty of the new Hunter/Garcia tunes, in that order.

If you don't like this song then you don't have the ability to go deep.

Because Days Between is the #1 exemplar of depth...

>>If you don't like this song then you don't have the ability to go deep.

I would agree completely with that, Thom.

Thom survived the days between W and Trump.

So Days Between would be the deepest of all songs? Even though you may love other deep ones, from Dylan to 2Pac, and anything in between, not liking Days Between shows that you're just not that deep?

I like it as a poem. After listening to 4-5 lyrical versions I think that it may need a side of ketchup.

Why, good sir, I would sooner put ketchup on a steak!

lol x2

I've listened to a bunch of Jerry versions, but I think that I like the Bobby one from Dear Jerry. That one came with a side of cheese.

First Turtle hurts my feelings - and now he laughs at my posts. He is so mean. I'm surprised no one has ever thrown coins at him.

He probably just wrote "lol" because the notion of someone's subjective opinion dictating the taste or depth of music fans at large is laughable.

Just my $0.02, which I would probably also throw at Thom.

"Scratch a liberal and get a fascist, every time."

I have a hard time accepting a definition of "deep" from someone who puts shit like that out there.

It's never a good idea to accept posts (anywhere, not just here) at face value - but that does not stop people from doing it time and time again.

Covfefe Emptor

I just like the Haunting words and the music Garcia wrote to go with them

When Bobby plays it he seems to take it very personally and put a lot of emotion into it.

you're not going to let the coin thing go, are you?

>>I just like the Haunting words

No matter who is singing it or where or when they are singing it - Hunter's lyrics to The Days Between ring very true concerning mankind's fleeting moment of existence.

>>you're not going to let the coin thing go, are you?

Never. I think about it with every breath I take.

However, in order to throw them - I guess you do have to let the coins go...

>and the music Garcia wrote

Yeah....

The lyrics suck.  The music sucks.  The whole thing sucks.  No worries though for anyone that is concerned. I get it.

different strokes for different folks as they say, Jonas

Exactly Mark.  I can only express my feeling on the subject.

Some here may be interested in Phil's feelings about Days  Between.

From the TXR 94 recreation show; 10/17/16

"That song is about our whole lives...  It covers everything.

I can't play it without being completely overwhelmed by how it captures the essence of what we were trying to do.

Jerry told me that the songs were ours once it left the band.  I'm taking that to heart.  Phil's wrong, the song still blows.

Celebrating Freedom of Expression. yes

Viva La Zone Rocks. cool

i like playing it on the bass with the band in my head ....i really like the chord choices ....and it lends its self nicely to hypnotic jamming ...jam in and jam out
