Dead and Company: "It's Not the Final Anything

Forums:

“Who knows what the next page is, we’re just turning the page,” Mickey Hart explained to ABC Audio. “It’s not final anything. We never said we’ll never play again, but we’ll never tour again.”

Okay, so no "Tour". Just a few shows in this City and that City. LOL.

Saw part of a story on the TV yesterday, just a quick blip, that showed how a guy paid over half a million dollars for the ball Tom Brady threw for his last touchdown. A few days later, Brady "unretired" and came back for another year. Value dropped by about half and the auction house ended up voiding the sale. Never say never, I guess.

Artists who do things for a lifetime have a fire in them and it's probably not going out until they quit breathing. Be interesting to see what evolves.

I get that, and plenty of musicians do farewell tours repeatedly. timing seems odd though on the statement

My prediction is Dylan and the Dead Tour 2024.
I'm Trailhead, and approve of this message.

Yawn.

But did you see that drone show?!  ;)

You mean the Dave Matthews sit-in?

Since he won the it's him or me showdown and wedged Billy out, now Mayer is having a change of heart?

Bay Area and L.A. holidays run in 3, 2, 1

If Mayer is out it will be better.

If Mayer is out I'd be open to the idea.

dolan and the msg thing

count on it

dead and company will be passing the torch to phil's new band, which will be the reformed PLQ playing grateful dead music at the same time as the DNB plays nelson tunes. the audience will all have headphones, with one band on the right ear and the other band on the left ear. phil has promised to beam more than ever, and to buy a ticket you must sign a contract that states you find this band better than the grateful dead with jerry garcia, and each audience member will be required to write a scathing review of each show they attend on the philzone, while working in some way to make fun of ryan adams in a different way in each review

Stake my future on a hell of a past
Looks like tomorrow is coming on fast
Ain't complaining 'bout what I got
Seen better times, but who has not?

Silvio
Silver and gold
Won't buy back the beat of a heart grown cold
Silvio
I gotta go
Find out something only dead men know

Honest as the next jade rolling that stone
When I come knocking don't throw me no bone
I'm an old boll weevil looking for a home
If you don't like it you can leave me alone

I can snap my fingers and require the rain
From a clear blue sky and turn it off again
I can stroke your body and relieve your pain
And charm the whistle off an evening train

I give what I got until I got no more
I take what I get until I even the score
You know I love you and furthermore
When it's time to go you got an open door

I can tell you fancy, I can tell you plain
You give something up for everything you gain
Since every pleasure's got an edge of pain
Pay for your ticket and don't complain

One of these days and it won't be long
Going down in the valley and sing my song
I will sing it loud and sing it strong
Let the echo decide if I was right or wrong

Silver and gold
Won't buy back the beat of a heart grown cold
Silvio
I gotta go
Find out something only dead men know

Thanks so much for the post Nancy... I was just about to buy the single row 1 center seat still remaining for the Gorge but given what Mickey said and the fact there will be a rapper I'm not dropping the $1,500 they want for THE SEAT.

Maybe they can bring in Adele or Celine Dion to sing the Donna parts. Or Katy Perry.

hope so ^

slots of fun

Wasn't the torch just passed to Dave?   lol

I found the article and Mickey's words a bit confusing.   So what I think I understand is that this version of post dead will not tour any more but they will/could do shows together - like new years or Mexico or something of the sort. Is that accurate?

Or was Mickey saying that he and booby won't being doing a tour together ever again?   Which is kind of weird because at this point it's just the two of them holding down what's left.

Let's face it, these guys like to play with our heads, they always have. It wouldn't be the Dead if they weren't being cryptic or confusing. They just did it when Kreutzman left.

Does anyone know what really happened there? Of course not.

You just have to look on the cover of Mars Hotel. "Ugly rumours". They love it.

It's still a long strange trip, and these guys are pros.

It's like Neil Young or Dylan, the moment you think you have them figured out, you don't. But it's still fun to watch.

FWIW

Pranksters till the end!

I think adding a yearly 3 night run in Boulder to the Mexico,NYE, Vegas shows around the fourth of July would be a good thing

But that's a lot of gear to sit around doing nothing most of the year

It's not over until Dewit says it's over.

Re: Does anyone know what really happened here regarding Billy.

Based on my conversation with someone who has inside knowledge of the workings of tours, because he manages money for top current touring artists (without naming names), it was most likely an insurance issue based on Billy's health condition. While he can probably get coverage for these one or two gigs such as he's doing in August with the "Kids", getting insurance for an entire tour is probably not feasible.

zang, your comment inspired me

https://old.reddit.com/r/gratefuldead/comments/14tcv1x/passing_of_the_to...

^^^^^ that above link to reddit was eye poping to me.  That there are folks out there that think Bobby literally passed the Grateful Dead torch to Dave Mathews at Folsom field on July 3rd, 2023. Wow, just wow.  I really enjoy The Dave Mathews Band, but I read Dave himself say they aren't really a "Jam" band.  And isn't it obvious that there is no need to pass any type of metaphysical musical 'Torch' to any band or person.  The grateful Dead created what they created.  Those that want to be influenced by them can be.  All art is like this. Who did Picasso pass his torch to?  Just seems like a silly question in its very nature.

Did you write that first post?

Holy F.   Love the first comment.

"Top tier shit post."

Fuck the torch. Quit yer blabbering and pass the goddam joint.

Residency at the new MSG dome could be interesting...............

With the sphere already providing a 4D experience, add in the fact that we already go to different dimensions and hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

yeah zang i posted that. its from a thread on phantasytour about trey and GD50, i just swapped out trey/phish for dave/dave matthews band and changed a few minor details

Now I understand that reddit link. Nice swap out Daylight by switching up trey/phish for dave/dave mathews band. Even to think that some thought a torch was being passed to Trey/Phish back at the GD50 shows is kinda crazy, but subbing in Dave Mathews to that original post is very sweet humor indeed.  Glad I finally got the joke. great shit.

,phil_19.jpg

So....Daylight:...you would know.

Is it true what I'm reading online, that all of this stuff that was worked out/workshopped at GD50 (Bobby set up a bunch of white boards with big markers and planners) is now happening?? It's exciting, right... A little nervous about it. Complicated plans! Apparently, Matt Busch has been carrying around these plans all those years...That's why he's got that sly smile...he knows. Shapiro is in on it too.

Here's what I'm reading, and according to Reddit and this YouTuber I follow, it's legit. and from people on the inside/in the know:

Dave backed out and Billy & The Kids are now playin' Saratoga on the 14th and 15th. Billy (not Bill the drummer, but that other one--the younger guy picking up his own torch) backed out of his gigs and Phil & Friends are now playin' North Carolina on the 14th and 15th.

Billy shelved the D&C tour to come out when the torch was passed! Phil never joined D&C -- same reason!  To make the grand ending/transition possible...

That all frees up the torch procession at the final D&C shows in SF (it's gonna be kinda like the Olympics) as the torch is carried from Boulder to SF (not sure why it skipped The Gorge--somebody said it was wildfire fears and insurance).

So, Dave comes out for the final D&C shows. Billy Strings is the opener. Because if there's anything about a torch being passed...we def. need him in there somehow.

The first finale' is Trey joining Jay Blakesberg for that post encore photo shot from the drumkit. That goes straight into a Phish set with Blakesberg sitting in (he's been taking Harp lessons from Mikaela Davis). There's a second finale' but it's still a secret.
