I liked hearing Was during setbreak.

Still waiting for that first Oteil ballad vocal. China Doll, Comes a Time, etc. It’s a crucial element. Fire on the Mountain is great, but we need more OB vocals. Best singer in the band.

Anything that keeps Mayer off the mic

Listened to some of the first set and it just dragged for me.   Seems like the playing is passable (no major train wrecks) but there is no life in Mayer's vocals to push or drive the band.  Plus the 1/2 speed on everything is painful.   I'll listen again to see if something grabs me.

Listened to the sneak peaks and was unmoved. My personal experience with D&C is that most nights there is a window on either side of drums  where I really enjoy the music. The rest is just OK. YMMV.

Does syncopation "count" as a faster tempo?

Heard JM pushing in that direction briefly at times during Cold Rain, but he pulled back from all out deployment (which I've heard in the past).

Slowest cold rain ever.  But yes there was a brief moment where he started to push and then just said fuck it.   Maybe the band wasn't joining him. maybe he's just enjoying the ride.   Not sure.

I streamed the audio for both nights, heard maybe 80% of the shows;

1.  I like Mayers new cleaner, more reverby tone...  fits the music nicely (a bit closer to that artificial Garcia sound)

2.  Mayers been busting out some new licks that are pretty impressive to this old player... may not be Steve Vai, but instead of noodling along with the music, he's been driving parts of it, which Dead music requires, pushing the improv envelope at every opportunity, which has led to

3.  The space(s) keeps getting better and better, as I agree the time before and after drums has been quite excellent, so much so that

4.  This band is playing better these first two shows (sans the first song or 2 of the sets) than most of what's come before (IMHO)

5.  Things are still slow, but not everything...  but there's been some great improv / interplay compared to previous tours, and I've been loving that!

Hopefully more shows up on youtube, because those first 2 seconds sets have been pretty kick ass, all considered

Meh

Desperate deadheads Eating crumbs off the ground

^ Desperate deadheads Eating crumbs off the ground

Such a sad commentary to make...

Since everyone seems to overwhelmingly hate this band, I'm going to stop wasting my time w/ concert posts...   thought folks would enjoy it (a few obviously do), and to them, I hope they had a real good time with the streams i've been able to share...   time to go back to my life, good luck everyone!

>> Desperate deadheads Eating crumbs off the ground

That's beyond sad.  Absolutely pathetic 'deader than thou' gatekeeping should have no place in the deadhead community, but it is of course always there and should be called out for the bullshit it is.

Not content to simply make his views about the band/music known he goes on to attack and belittle everyone who happens to enjoy the music being made today by those who gave us so much.

It's pretty obvious who the desperate deadhead is in this equation and it ain't the folks enjoying the music with smiles on their faces.

Get a grip, dude.  You aren't a gatekeeper who determines what is worthy of deadhead attention, you're just being an asshole.

Believe it if you need it, otherwise fuck off quietly.

<time to go back to my life, good luck everyone! >

Oh Jezuz, Did Noodler just pull a JayBud on us?  Over criticism of Dead music?  I go away for a little while and come back and the black screen is like a hot sidewalk. Is Mercury in retrograde or something?

>> Over criticism of Dead music?

I won't speak for Noodler but what was offensive to me about (love matters) post is that he wasn't critiquing the music but disparaging the fans who dare to enjoy it.

Which is a pathetic, immature way of being a deadhead in my opinion.  Certainly less kind than enjoying the guitar playing of Mayer or the drummers tempos or whatever the main offense thousands of happy DeadCo deadheads are committing to (love matters) point of view.

Some people really like licorice.  Some assholes think those people are "desperate" and eating off of the ground.

Keep up the posts, Noodler! I really appreciate the quick links, artwork, and set lists - and, man, that FreakFlagFlyer stream last night was most excellent!! Thank You - forget the haters. DeadCo is what it is but I like the Gary/David banter & guests as well which I am happy to see without paying for the official HD stream too.

Well, I think we can all agree on one thing -- that these three guys should be heard and not seen.

It looks like a Zoom call between a Mexican bandit, a kidnaped hippy, and the rich uncle that won't pay ransom.

Or, maybe like the three cool teachers in junior high school that let you sneak out and smoke cigs in the parking lot if you brought them back lunch from Arby's.

239749095_10219686073255064_5003924030909000411_n_0.jpg

I hope criticizing those guys is ok

That's funny Alan!

For me, it has nothing to due with insults nor criticism, i've been an outspoken gay man for 40 something years, have had more death threats than I could possibly even begin to remember...  had a lover who was murdered, I know the dark side very well, kind of an old friend anymore, because it seems to be the most consistent thing in my life.

But I love this music, have played on stage my entire adult life, and appreciate how difficult it is to pull off playing a dead tune and giving it life.

Putting these threads together takes work, and sacrifice...  and it's a lot more enjoyable to kick my feet up, and enjoy the music, than search for links, take screen shots, keep up with the songs, yada yada...  there's lots of folks here that can take over for me, not like i'm going anywhere, but it's time for a break, thanks for helping me make up my mind!

I hope this doesn't affect cool volcano pics and knowledgeable weather reports. I kinda depend on those Noodler.

I've thoroughly enjoyed every DeadCo show I've seen live, and based on the faces of the others in attendance, so have the other 15,000 - 60,000 people there. Okay, maybe 8-10% of it isn't fantastic but the other 90% is. Still though, people love to focus on the negative.

I've also enjoyed all the shows I've watched, and it has been quite a few.

It is pretty sad that people come on these threads to put down not only the band, but also the hundreds of thousands of people who are enjoying the shit out of it. What's even sadder is that most of the time they haven't actually listened to more than a few minutes of it, if at all.

Hey Noodler - thanks for taking the time to build a thread. I appreciate that you took the initiative. I'm sorry that you feel burned or feel that your efforts are wasted. They're not. Viva La Zone!

Appreciate your efforts Druba, I always check these threads, kinda like a box score in sports. You can get a good feel of the game from the written page. I also like the one Dead & Co. show I seen, it was fun, young and old. JM is alright, nothing earth shakin, but fun is good in my book. I would go back. If Phil, Bob or Billy is playing Fl. I m usually there

Thanks for your efforts to shine a little light, Noodler, you're aces in my book.

Just ignore LLTD, he's a crusty old fahrt and is essentially the derp yang to Bryen's derp ying, and should be treated with the same indifference.

Don Was seems like a cool cat.  Enjoyed the HCS set opener.  Glad people are getting out and finding joy.

Mick is starting to look a bit like Paul Simon (but just a bit I guess, since I spent about 10 seconds wondering, "Hmm, Mick is starting to look like someone . . ."). wink

I too appreciate the effort Noodler.

I'll be sorry if you don't carry on with these D$C threads. I don't pay enough attention to know when they're playing, so it's cool to have these threads show up, and I enjoy checking in and watching the sneak peeks, just to keep up with those old & not quite so old road dogs.

And I'll chime in to say again that despite initially being absolutely convinced that the band and Mayer in particular would be terrible, I have only seen one show of the eleven D$C shows I've seen that I thought was a dud, and that was mostly due to the 2nd set song choices.

They played that one about growing into their shoes and telling them where to go.

Sheesh, and people think Phish lyrics are bad.

Not a DeadCo fan, but I enjoy reading reports about it. Keep on Noodlin'!

They played that one about growing into their shoes and telling them where to go.

Sheesh, and people think Phish lyrics are bad.<<<<

You're going compare Hunter's transcendental Days Between passages to Phish? I'd recommend taking a nice walk and think about what you've done here. A small time-out for self reflection and a perhaps a retraction.

Of course DeadCo butchers it. They are a slaughterhouse of the divine.

>>>>>They played that one about growing into their shoes and telling them where to go.

One of RH and the GD's most powerful and transcendent songs, IMO.

Dif. strokes.

I still don't like Days Between. I have, however, learned to appreciate Victim which I never thought would happen.

>  gatekeeping should have no place in the deadhead community

Gatekeeping the gatekeepers. How meta of you, Terry Taquito.

I've always like the harmonic progression of Days Between. Very Grateful Dead.

So much suck.

That fucking hat.

That meme where Garcia is slugging Trey?  Needs to be updated to pop tart cougar bait.

I have had more fun than not at their shows, but the last two I went to where so frustrating that I've decided to stay away. Especially because as people here have said the pre and post drums was actually really good, but the molasses you have to slog through to get there just put me in a bad mood.

That said I love these posts. Like checking out the box scores and I do want to be drawn back in. Also in my experience the zone is the only place this debate even exists. My friends, from people who occasionally play with Stu to random old Dead Heads I meet at the dog park all love this band.

I had the D&C tour opener playing while working last night.  Busy, involved high-concentration job, so it was pretty much background music.  As I came up for air the band was in a jam and brought it back to the Playin' theme.

But it was so slow and clunky, for a second, I thought it was Ballad of A Thin Man.

Ultimately I never really care much about lyrics, but transcendental?

I think you're on a phantom ship with phantom sails, set to sea on phantom tides.

To me, the lyrics are hammy and saccharinely sentimental.

I do really like the, "There are days, and there are days between" idea. There's a gravitas to that, and I figure if Hunter had come up with that thread 20 years earlier he would have come up with something truly great.

Whatever, it's just my take, but I don't think it's Hunter's best work by a long shot, and again...

Once we grew into our shoes, we told them where to go?

That just makes me laugh.

(My minimal trolling for the month is now officially done)

Dear Noodler, I am so sorry. I don't even know what to say (yes, rare) that might feel better about the situation for you here. It's easy to hold you in high esteem, very high esteem, and I do.

Thank you for everything you've done at Viva; music, cartoons, memes, things that tie us together, entertain, and make us think.

Hope to see you soon, and hope you're able to get back to what you've done here.

druba, my crush on you still stands, and that is because who you are here seems very genuine, you always post kindly, and you post fab pix taboot.

if you had an email addy in your profile i would have privately offered you a reading. if you would like one on the house, please feel free to get in touch

>  I don't think it's Hunter's best work by a long shot

I'm a big fan of Day's Between, even though those three phantoms in a row in the second stanza grate on me. They just seem lazy. Like the kind of thing you'd see in a first draft.

So what do you think Hunter's best work is, Lance?

Do what you have to do do to take care of yourself, Noodler. Speaking for myself, I'll say that your contributions are appreciated even if D&C isn't.

>>>So what do you think Hunter's best work is, Lance<<<

Pretty much everything else he wrote.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I've been promised a glow.

I must go learn and love and grow.

>>>Pretty much everything else he wrote<<<

I actually believe that, but I realize it's also a bit of a cop-out.

As I said, I don't spend much time with lyrics. I don't go to musical events to hear messages in the words, but just about everything he wrote from the American Beauty/Workingman's Dead period through In The Dark is all pretty stellar.

But after actually thinking about it for a moment, what came to my mind as amazing writing is his eulogy to Jerry, as well as his "letter to Jerry" that he put out a year after Garcia died.

Dude had a way with words for sure.

I don't know if your answer was a cop-out, Lance, but the question's not really a fair one. As far as Hunter's lyrics are concerned, there are a number of different kinds (e.g. the psychedelic imagery of China Cat vs. the tales of the wild west in Jack Straw vs. the existential yearning of Days Between), and they have different appeals at different times in life.

I was listening to a JGB show the other day (2/28/80), and the Mission in the Rain from the late show hit me like I was hearing it for the first time all over again, and especially the lines but everything you gather /  is just more that you can lose. Simple language, but it digs real deep.

>>> Dude had a way with words for sure. <<<

When I read that I immediately thought of this, recorded by many people, the first one I heard was A.J. Croce. Clever.

He's got a way with women
And he just got away with mine
