GQ Dead and Company Fashion. Fashion?!

https://www.gq.com/story/dead-and-company-fall-tour-msg-deadhead-style-m...

The Grateful Dead subculture has one of the most unique styles in music fandom. And on Sunday, Deadheads from all corners of the country proved it at Madison Square Garden, where Dead & Company kicked off their fall tour. Dead & Co., led by John Mayer and Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir, attracts OG Deadheads who have attended countless shows since the 1970s—one guy, who wore a custom Grateful Dead leather vest under his Dead & Co. varsity jacket, said he had attended upwards of 150 Jerry Garcia sets. For them, Sunday night was a reunion of sorts, and they pulled out gear from their collections of bootleg T-shirts and custom jackets. But Dead & Co. also turns out a new generation of fans who have been initiated into the culture (we did just experience the Summer of Grateful Dead, after all). These kids have embraced a different side of the Deadhead DIY world, and rocked up in their rare T-shirts from the likes of WOBF and From The Lot. Naturally, we had to send Mordechai Rubinstein—AKA Mister Mort, expert chronicler of subcultural style–to hang out and snap the most epic tie-dye T-shirts and stealie patches that he could find throughout the day and night.

Much prefer tonights show. Pacing and song cadence so much better. And JM has great tone tonight compared to yesterday.

I agree. Band is tighter tonight and song selection played well. Band and Bobby really letting JM lead the charge.

One of the things I like about Phils playing, is how many different ways he manages to play the lines between chord changes (in any given song at that), rare to ever repeat.  I really appreciate the way Billy's been doing that on the drums...  sure a couple of misses (just like Phil), but there's been several occasions where he's just killing it, even if a slow tempo...   can't remember the song last show, but he did at least 5 different patterns in just a very short amount of time, very dynamic and quite brilliant!  I'm surprised Mickey didn't throw a boot at him in celebration

Nice set.

Jeezus some of you are cranky old fucks (or trolling little boys).  I hope I don't get so bitter and mentally incontinent in extreme old age.  Many arguments I hear relating to Dead and Company resemble the remarks I would hear from non-Deadheads in the time of Grateful Dead.  Tempo...vocals...diddling... Try some Kendrick Lamar or something...country music might work for y'all...Glen Miller...I don't know.  I'm looking forward to seeing a couple shows from these guys.  All due respect to Herring, Mayer is the most talented and adventurous guitarist I've heard with Dead members since Jerry passed.  Music is in the ear of the beholder.  There's no "right" or "wrong."  Some people listen to Rod Stewart, Cher, early Beatles, The Hollies, ELO for Chrissake.  Love it or shove it but whichever, it will always only be rock and roll.

Some people listen to the same songs all day everyday.

its like eating oatmeal for every meal

<<<>>>>All due respect to Herring, Mayer is the most talented and adventurous guitarist I've heard with Dead members since Jerry passed.

wow. most adventurous? this entire band takes zero chances. that's what i don't get-i understand everyone like different shit; but you hear mayer taking chances to explore, you hear mayer being adventurous to take the music to unknown places? i disagree. i hear a band that has no chemistry, and all the parts are just there, on stage, playing at the same time. its quite noisy.

"All due respect to Herring, Mayer is the most talented and adventurous guitarist I've heard with Dead members since Jerry passed."

You need to get out more.  There is absolutely nothing "adventurous" about his playing.  He usually plays over the rest of the band and to my ears isn't listening to what the others are doing.  There's no meshing going on.  I tried to take in some of the stream last night but had to turn it off during Bird Song.  He's a talented guitarist in some ways but completely unsuited for this music.

John Scofield is adventurous.

Very 'safe' song selection as well.yawn

Big Dead & Company fan, I've liked every show I've seen. Tempos are a little slow and the show with Metallica last week was a big disappointment...

But besides that, I think they're great!

Mickey Hart is the weakest link, no surprise there wink

I just can't get behind this band.  Sterile, lifeless performances of the music I love.  Feel the same way about Phil and the family band too.

^^  Yeah, I hear ya. It makes me miss Garcia even more, thinking back about his guitar playing and voice in the songs. Impossible to beat Jerry, on the good versions at least angel

>>>You need to get out more...<<<

I get out plenty, pops.  And, I enjoy Scofield. He's no Al Dimiola but fair to moderate. We'll disagree.  Mayer has brought me out of Dead retirement.  He's the first guitarist whose playing doesn't make me miss Jerry during Dead people shows.  (Of course, I miss Garcia, I mean musically speaking in the course of a performance.)  Others seemed to be soloists under the direction of whichever Dead member(s) was present.  To each his/her own.   (Scofield is, like Mayer, a Connecticut-raised kid who went on to attend Berkeley College of Music.)

nice! smiley

52 years and still killing it!!!

Maybe scofield gained momentum the longer he was on tour with Phil, but imo Boca was the best show of that tour and Scofield never stepped up that night. Larry carried the show all night and especially in that smoking second set. I will say Scofield did step up a bit more in Orlando, but still nothing ground breaking. Jimmy Herring is miles beyond Scofield in this style of music.

"Scofield is, like Mayer, a Connecticut-raised kid who went on to attend Berkeley College of Music.)"

Lol, is that anything like the Berklee College of music.

For my ears Mayer is beyond awful. I truly did not think it could be worse than JK and Furthur, but boom there the doofus Mayer is, up on stage. Interminable playing, no swagger, no interesting new covers or originals, just awful to listen too. It truly is the opposite of the Garcia era. Someone really should have sat down Bob Bill and Mick and explained to them that money is not worth what they are doing.

In my heart of heart i believe this to be Bobs revenge for 30 years of being shit on by Deadheads. The joke really is on us.

He's no Al Dimiola<<

HAHAHAHA.

>>Someone really should have sat down Bob Bill and Mick and explained to them that money is not worth what they are doing.

Money is pretty much 90% of the reason they are doing it.

John Mclaughlin and Jimmy Herring  $39

King Crimson $49

Dead and Company $150

^^^^^

There’s some pricing perspective that exposes the value/cost equation.

Great pricing comparison - that explains the popularity of American Idol.

Seen the first 2 bands in the past 10 days, worth every penny. $150 to see Mickey McMallet, I don't think so.

Listening through some of this show now.  Just prior to this I listened to 3/27/88.  Maybe it would be better if I had just listed to this show on its own, but I don’t know.  Painfully slow tempos to the point where familiar songs seem disjointed and forced.  Saw the last year at the SPAC, thought the same.  I for one am done, too much other music out there.

Pretty spot on assessment of the burning tire fire that is DeadCo. Although I do believe Weir actually considers himself a bit of a shaman, traversing the land to extend the love, legacy and gospel of the Grateful Dead. The end result is terrible but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt that his heart is in the right place.

Where did Mayer buy that sweater, Dress Barn or Anthropologie?

I've tried to stay away from this Dumpstah Fiya but just thought of something marginally Witty (even a blind Nut occasionally finds a Squirrel).  Background:  Since this tour began, I've been deluged w/emails, calls, texts, from friends Imploring me to go see DeadCo, saying how great it is and what a fun time it is.  This reminds me of last year when I was similar-ly Deluged about Bernie Sanders, how I should vote for him, how great his policies are, etc, etc.  So I thought of a Couplet that actually rhymes, here goes:

"In 2016 they tried to Convince me Bernie's the Man;

In 2017 they tried to Convince me DeadCo's the Band"

nut is still blind....;)

Yeah I know but I got to laugh, that's all that matters to me ;)

so for those who think Dead & co. has it going on-would you rather hear Mayer or Sless play the music? to my ears Barry explores the songs at a much higher level byt Mayer is not awful as some say.
