Agree 100% Although Bobby is dictating  a plodding pace at times and on many tunes.... it is JM stepping up and letting loose on the jam.  Bobby not stepping in and cutting jams like he did before.

Time will tell on the passing the torch thing but the "Core 3" of this band is John, Jeff and Oteil.

I don't want to sell Weir short though. He is definitely in fine form and I appreciate his dramatic readings of the lyrics.

Only reason that China Doll and Black Peter in the same set is okay is that Oteil's China Doll is cool as shit

Just back home from a nice night with good people listening to songs that I like. Danced, sat. People all seemed to be happy to be there.

Will leave the music reviews to others.

LOVE the set lists by CornBread ... it was like a game of GD Jeopardy trying to figure out song titles.  Bonus for the GDTRFB encore, where the lyric is from a verse that Mayer sings but Jerry didn't.

That was the Daily Double.

Isn't it feed me on cornbread and beans?

Warren sang that line in the ABB,

but I've heard it in early versions as well.

Peas or beans, that's folk.

"First set Lost Sailor?"

That song was always first set material, just a waste of precious real estate in the second set.

I listened to the first half of Set II. The jam in Deal was pretty sick, and the vocal shit at the end was kind of cool. I really liked the China Doll, maybe more than any I've heard without Jerry. The Terrapin was well played, and I think that Mayer does a good job with the first verses.

Hi Floops. I know you gave Deadco some mixed reviews the other day.  Hope you did not give up on the band? Did not see you on the Fenway Threads.  Were you able to check out the 6/18 fathers day show?  Really was top notch.

Hi Don.....Must be nice to have shows practically in your back yard?   Set lists look good.  But You did  not provide a review or any commentary regarding the band, music or individual performances?   sad

Super fun night as always. Lawn at SPAC as per usual WAAAAAY over sold.  Too many distractions to really hear or feel to music but def a fun time.

>>>.its johns band now

This has always been Mayo's band. He arranged the bank roll and publicity. He wanted to play in the Dead so badly that he hired 3 of the former members as sidemen and paid for the rights to call this something it just isn't.

Don't think anyone had to pay anybody to use "Dead and Company".

image_612.jpg

i listened to half step and thought mayer had no idea how to play it.

zero build up, no substance or character given to ge song....besides that, bobby was doing his weird ratdog repeat phrasing bs.

his guitars look nice tho.

KK

Did not review the music on purpose.  Keeping everything positive and happy on the thread.

lol

>>>Don't think anyone had to pay anybody to use "Dead and Company".

Tell that to Universal.

Add loose lucy after next time you see me^^^^^^

Jambone thanks

I blame Cornbread

That's not fair, Nod. Loose Lucy is clearly included in my set list. I did, however, miss the Chinacat. I had to run to the store during intermission to pick up more beer, smokes, a frozen pizza, and my blood pressure medication and did not return until the Deal was going down.

Cornbread, the community needs you to understand that posting DeadCo setlists is a sacred responsibility; please stay focused and purchase your convenience store items, blood pressure meds, etc. before the band begins performing.

You're doing great work, and I still believe in you. Thanks.

So OK my review of my Journey to the venerated venue of SPAC.  So I thought leaving @ 2 pm would be plenty early enuff, boyyyyyy was that wrong - Mass Pike was down to 1 lane for construction about half the distance, plodding along @ 20 mph behind trucks climbing the grade into the Berkshires.  Then I hit Albany right @ 5pm rush hr peak - something like 20 different ramps all converge on the 3 lanes of I-87 north - so add another hour plus, I get to near the venue after 6:30, all the lots are full, relying on instinct I managed to squeeze my way into the area just behind the old spa buildings, about as close as you can get while being parked on that "maze" east side of the venue.  At this point really second guessing my decision to make this trek "what the F was I thinking?"  But maintained my calm, retirement has it's benefits, not getting stressed or excited about it - so what?  It's just DeadCo!

So make my way in just after 7, at this point way too late to try to find anyone else I may have been in contact with, I'm flying solo tonite.  Find a nice spot in between older folks w/rows of chairs in front & behind me, pretty well protected from interlopers, but it gets pretty crowded pretty fast, oh this is fun, just like the old days!

Show starts, and boy the 1st set is just downright BRUTAL - Bucket, Loose Lucy, LL Rain, Sailor-Saint all in 1 set is more Punishment than any sane person should be subject to.  Next Time You See Me, 1/2 Step, & Direwolf the only redeemers.  And of course the rain.  That brief sun shower sure was fun, and psychedelic.  Took some pix of the sky & clouds & rainbows, posted to Facebook (yes I'm on FB now, my Gawd!).  Noticed during the short jammy-esque interlude in Saint how it affected a lot of the folks around me, who'd been grooving happily to all the sing-along-er's before this - all of a sudden the vibe got all aggro & stressed out, both from the Mooch of X-ing out Wooks to my left, to the group of Joe Lunch Pail Normal Guys drinking Bud Lite Tall Boys to my right.  At this point the idea of mellowing back & really trying to EXPERIENCE the vibe of the folks around me really started to take hold as my "mission" for the night.  Especially since I've always noticed the happy basic rockin' sing along stuff that makes everyone else all groovy & happy is typically boring as shit to me, whilst the deep dark psychedelia that I love usually weirds out everyone else, sending them into babbling raves, playing w/phones, or for the beer lines.  (now of course I already knew there'd be no Deep Dark Psychedelia @ a Dead Co show).

Took a good long walk during set break, water & bathroom run, ran into a few folks along the way, hi, talk talk talk, bye (you all know who you are, no need for name dropping).  Took more pix of crazy cloud formations & all the cool spa buildings.  Back to my spot for 2nd set, China Cat opener sounds all weird & "off" which I'm really appreciating, also sound is much much better, then unexpectedly into Deal, which was a nice twist & a nice spot for Deal, rather than later in the 2nd set.  The Oteil-sung China Doll was really powerful & for me was the most soulful, heartfelt, passionate thing this band has ever done.  Of course noticing all the folks around me NO ONE is into it, lots of aggro talking, the wooks are all huggy/kissy, @ least they're enjoying their love drug responsibly, keeping it all in Pham-Pham.  I did notice the Alpha Wook, the one with the most pins on his flat brim, the one who wanted to be "in charge" & perpetually pull the chicks to him so he could hug them, the one loudly telling everyone his thoughts about everything, this dude simply DID NOT pay an IOTA of attention to the music all night, never once swaying or "feeling" it in any way, it was all about HIM and his CONTROL over everyone else.  Man I'm so glad to be a Beta Cuck, I can just sit back & observe, no need to feel compelled to be "the F-in Man" in anyone's else's perception.

So then into Terrapin, was not that psyched for Mayer's singing, but then started to notice the subtle crazy things going on in the sound - was that really Auto Tune?  YES IT WAS!!!!  MY GOD THEY'VE AUTO TUNED TERRAPIN - HOW DARE THEY COMMIT SUCH SACRILEDGE!!!!!  But it was actually really COOL and sounded really trippy & interesting.  It also worked really well in this Saratoga venue, which is notorious for good sound.  At this point was starting to be glad I was experiencing this.  Drums was fun since it was Billy/Mickey at Saratoga, again, the venue really made it special.  Space -> Watchtower was probably the musical highlight of the show for me, they finally sounded like they were approaching really trying to play like they meant it & do things differently/creatively.  Of course lots of folks called this a trainwreck.  Then into the additional Punishment of Black Peter (which was due & expected).  But again as with the Terrapin, they were doing all kinds of crazy distortion tricks with the vocals that made it really interesting/trippy, the chorus part sounded really underwater & warbly, so mere sound tricks made something mundane/awful actually interesting.  So I'm giving them lots of credit for attempting to craft a sound, even if not via the music itself, which had NO jamming AT ALL, at least by using sound tricks.  Is this a Mayer thing?  We'll never know.

Then the jam @ the end of Black Peter started to build up & I remembered they didn't do Rider so was really hoping for a great transition from the Peter Jam into Rider, but what happens - the jam dissolves into nothing, they have to wait for Bobby to count off a new start to Rider - REALLY - you guys couldn't pull off what should have been a bar-band simple transition?  I thought Hoover said "if you play this music you don't have to rehearse I Know You Rider"  Well apparently DeadCo does.  Wow that was a really make-or-break moment for me (if I even really cared), but no one anywhere around me was even aware of this, only I threw my hands on my head howling in agony during this 20-30 seconds of the show - so only a Nerd like me cares about something this "nit picky".  Yes it's just DeadCo;  Go expecting Nothing, & ye shall not be Disappointed.  GDRFB was OK, better than many other possibilities (Useless Blues, JB Goode, etc).

Then the long trek back to my truck, lots of fun walking thru all the old spa buildings, took some more cool pictures in the misty fog.  Change of clothes & shoes, quick refreshing sponge bath using cooler melt water, snack on burrito I bought @  mexican restaurant on the way up, a few pbr's, still had to wait until nearly 1 am for traffic to clear enough to try leaving (I was parked about as "deep" as could be), but no hurry, I wasn't gonna be sleeping anytime soon, & being retired, have no deadline to get home for, & the ride home was a total breeze compared to getting there.

So, all & all, the venue, the rainstorm, gnarly cloud formations, sound distortion tricks, and my observational mode of the folks around me whilst in a highly altered state really made for an interesting and intriguing experience for me.  The music?  Meh . . . . Pretty sure I'm spoiled by this venue & would only go see Dead Co at this venue ever again.  Certainly not going to a stadium or even one of the usual cookie cutter sheds . . .

Thank you for the words of encouragement, St Mark, but I'm more of a have fun, roll with the flow and shuck responsibility kind of guy.

I can appreciate that, Cornbread. In many ways, I share your sentiment.

Thanks for the detailed review ssb.

Glad you had a good time!

Cornbread

Just funnin you.  My bad on Loose Lucy

You had the ONLY setlist - so good for you. Glad that you enjoyed the show

Holy shit. Lmao.

Here's link to my facebook photo album - some of the cloud pictures came out pretty good:

Listening now.  Poor Black Peter.  He's begging to have his plug pulled, and Bobby will only stand on his oxygen tube.

13+ minutes.  Brutal.

That Peter was so limp and uninspiring, I was begging to be put out of my misery.

Actually, that pretty much describes the entire show...not to be Little Miss Drainbow Pants, but it was painful at times.  Def the last time I Deadco.  I'd rather give my money to the orphans.

lol Tracy

Kenny, I really do feel like you're getting paid for this kind of PR work. Is it true?

>>Def the last time I Deadco.  I'd rather give my money to the orphans.

That's basically what E said after Fenway, Tracy. "There. I got that out of my system."

I had to run to the store during intermission to pick up more beer, smokes, a frozen pizza, and my blood pressure medication .

^^^^^^That's gold Jerry...That's gold.

smokes, a frozen pizza ---> blood pressure medication .

Kenny, I really do feel like you're getting paid for this kind of PR work. Is it true? >>>>>

.

I wish. I could really use some extra dough and am not adverse to getting paid for something I love to do.   The fact is I really  like this band and think JM is a great talent.  He has demonstrated a great work ethic and appreciation of the GD catalog that rivals  Warren, Jimmy  as well as  Larry Campbell.  And like the fore mentioned is  not a clone.  I assure you mijn goede man my  enthusiasm is based on the music, musicianship and commitment.

I do not think you had a chance to check out 6/18 yet?  If not find a good Youtuber  and give it a good listen on a lazy rainy Sunday.  You may change your tune....or maybe not.

Tot ziens Bro.

Sorry to say but My God when Autotune is the musical highlight of a show something ain't right in Dodge City.

But I do remember me, Dogman, Billy Shears, and a few others having a lot more fun making mockery of last year's Hartford show:

"There's A Parking Boot On That Wheel Chock"

Sometimes the songs that we hear are just songs of our own.

Ahhhhhh, The inevitable stern"Bad Vibes" lecture in the form of a GD lyric.  Usually it's the Plant Ice, Harvest Wind one tho . . .

As far as playing/singing GD music, John Mayer is about on the same level as Jackie Green for me, well below the usual suspects (Warren, JK, Joan, Jimmy, Chris R, Larry C, Steve K, etc), but above such D-listers as Keller Williams, the Moe, JRAD, or SCI guys, or that Little Feat/guy who flips his hair lineup in 2000.  Altho I have far more respect for Jackie as his own career music is at least listenable, he does have a few good songs (Down in the Valley Woe, Cold Black Devil are 2 I think of off the cuff), altho live he tends to play pop cheez catering to the Cougar demographic - yes I get it, he's gotta make a living.  Mayer's stuff, on the other hand, I've never made it past a minute listening to any of his songs, which are for the 13 year old teenage girl just graduating from boy band demographic.  That I could never deal with . . .

It's all cool, Kenny. You're good in my book.

You know that the crawling tempo is The factor against this band for me.

Even so, if you have a link to that show you recommended, I'll give it a go.

And, may you find the end of a rainbow, bro.

More soulless - John Mayer or Joe Bonamassa? Please discuss.

Even their names are interchangeable. Joe Mayer and John Bonamassa.

"Alpha Wook"

So excellent.  I got to start my day off with a good laugh.

"so only a Nerd like me cares about something this "nit picky"."

Right there with you brother.

Great review, thanks.

> More soulless john Mayer or Joe Bonamassa?<

Bonamassa... He is a soulless vampire.

I  thought second Fenway was really good, and to me, the best show theyve played since their inception. But, then  they followed that w two lousy shows.
