Dead and Company is announcing PITS 2022 tomorrow - on April Fools Day?

I would seriously consider it except for the fact that the don't sell tickets separate from the hotel package.   I travel cheap whenever I am in Mexico and often camp on the beach for next to nothing.  Would love to see a show down there, but can't imagine paying $$$ to stay in some fancy hotel.

I'm with you on that, Ken, but also do not recall any "tickets only" options for PITS either. Those MX festies are an all-inclusive destination money funnel,  complete with varying levels of hotel/resort, food/drinks etc, and show access. I think air (and ground?) transport is something that is not part of the package(s)?

...but, should one happen to be in the area, I am sure "show access" would not be altogether difficult either.

"show access"

Ha! No kidding. Maybe the cartel(s) could side-hustle their narco-subs into a DeadCo fan transporter service, complete with "goodie bags" for the show!

I don't know if "show access" is such a good thing at that location. I understand that someone who got caught in the venue without a "ticket" and some goodies spent over a year in jail. Obviously didn't have money to grease the wheels of Mexican justice either.

Is the beach private?  Can't people walk along the long beach without interruption.

There is only 1 MX fest that I'm aware of that offered tickets w/o resort: the first year of Strings & Sol in Tulum.

Our crew of 8 rented a small beach house (owned by some music industry dude from Berkeley) 15 minutes walk up the playa... we were ignoring their rules and not entering at the front of the resort... and some smartasses in our crew almost got us banned completely.

Ticket policy was changed the very next year.

The best part: I met Schenectady at the registration desk!  Where are ya these days, Schnee?

^^^ Damn auto-spell... Schnee, not Schenectady!

Custie fest or "John Mayer Needs a New Rolex Fest"

^ lol Ken

Ken, do you think the poor working people of Mexico like custies more than the budget travelers?

Cancun, ewwwww.

Not on the list.

>>>>Ken, do you think the poor working people of Mexico like custies more than the budget travelers?

Its a good question, but I suspect most of the money that gringos pour into the all inclusive, beachfront hotels doesn't trickle down much to the working class (the guys on the beach selling schwag weed and bad cocaine probably do well).   I prefer to spend my money in small mom and pop stores if possible and tip at US rates.   But yeah, Covid notwithstanding, Mexico is ready for the tourists again.

I suspect most of the money that gringos pour into the all inclusive, beachfront hotels doesn't trickle down much to the working class <<<

This is my suspicion as well and have never even considered any of the "all inclusive" shows in the last decade in Mexico by gd related or other "jam bands".

There's something a bit off-kilter about spending cash to reside in a safety bubble amidst poverty all around.  I suppose this could be said about many urban venues in the US

"There's something a bit off-kilter about spending cash to reside in a safety bubble amidst poverty all around..."

In reality, the impoverished Mexican people enjoy the influx of Gringo tourist Money,  as it's a big part of the economy.
If they didn't like it, they would not allow Gringos in the Country. This is perhaps a New concept to you;  maybe you've always stayed in Iowa or Sascatchewan your entire life.

The Mexicans have Border control at Airports,  highways, ports.  If you are from another country, you must keep your tourist visa up to date in Mexico. You're not allowed to work in Mexico if you don't have a Work visa.

They ( Mexico ) will deport your ass (after some jail time) if you are a foreigner working in their country without the proper work visa.

^^^^ Strongly agree --- just like most cruise ships -- these resorts build a bubble that give fear-based tourists a sense of security and separation from the authentic culture.

When I was in the DR, 20 years ago, we took one of those day tours. As we drive through the small town and villages the tour guide would point out the homes of the people who worked in the resorts, which were bigger, nicer and newer than everything else. He said that the resort employees made more in a month than the average yearly salary, and they and their extended families had higher QOLs. The stopover town on those day tours also reaped the rewards.

@Ken

Good answer! I hope they get some nice tips though.

And a good party and music to boot. Not a bad job.

People from "third-world" nations earn a buck or two per hour on those cruise ships compared to the Canada / USA resident salaries of twenty bucks per hour, or whatever wage...  So it's "Good Money" for them and they are well-fed, but they are being paid less compared to the Gringos.

If you don't believe me, ask actual workers on those Cruise Ships.

I'm sure that the disparity on cruises is horrible. I was only relaying what I was told about the DR, from a local. There, by law, something like 95% of resort employees have to be Dominican and a really high percent of food, drink and goods "sold" in the resorts have to be produced in the DR.

I don't see how any of that is negative.

@Disco Stu

Where do you get your info where 3rd world  workers on Caribbean Cruise ships get paid chump change like a buck or 2 an hour!? I call BULLSHIT!

Playing in the Sand: It's the PITS?

So my Portland girlfriends are discussing this on our text thread... evidently the golf course rooms include a golf cart!

That makes me want to go just to be a wacky driver!

If only it weren't in Cancun, and if only I had vacation time (new job blues).

So looking forward to this!

"...@Disco Stu

Oh sorry Doolitter.

That second-hand information came from a guy who worked as Cruise - Ship Chef.  He told the truth about what he knew.  I believe him; he always tells true stories.

Same Fellow has details on how to Clean Shrimp quickly and efficiently,  but if I told you, you would mumble and blather.

It's possible that you have worked on those ships and have more modern information. Otherwise, Fuck Off.

I did a little research, and I couldn't find anything that said workers are paid $1-2 p/h. It does seem, however, that there is a very strict hierarchy. Those at the bottom earn less and have shittier conditions, and it all gets better as you move up the hierarchy.

It's probably safe to say that many of the positions at the bottom of the hierarchy, the housekeepers, servers, dishwashers, etc, are non-white and/or are from third world countries.

Here's an article from 2002 that describes some of the fucked up things that happen to the lowest on the totem pole. One is that they have to pay an agent to get them the job. The cruise line loans them the money for that, as well as for plane tix to get to the cruise. A person is an indentured servant by the time they start working. As such, they work long hours for almost nothing. Maybe things have changed in the last 20 years? http://www.cruisejunkie.com/ot.html

Jumped the shark

Oh Lord,  please give me PHIL while you still can

Here you go!

My parents like to go on cruises and occasionally I will join them (wouldn't step foot on one of those things otherwise).   On a cruise down in South America two years ago, they had "ask the captain night" where the captain would take questions from the audience.   I asked the captain whether, being a Dutch registered ship, they were subject to EU labor laws.   The captain gave a long winded answer about international maritime conventions, but basically ducked the question about minimum wages.

And there is definitely a hierarchy.  All of three of the cruise ships I have been on were Dutch registered and the officers are all Dutch, while the waiters, deckhands, cooks, cleaning staff, etc, are all from Indonesia (a former Dutch colony).

....nearly all of the ships are foreign-flagged and escape many U.S. tax & labor laws yet expect preferential treatment at U.S. ports, etc. Just so a gaggle of out of shape retirees "can see the world". SCAM.

I have family and friends whom were very involved in the industry for years and those ships are floating excuses for tax cheats, slave labor enthusiasts, and large-scale ocean-pollutors.

Relax Stu. Don't get all stuwed up over a simple question! What boat did your friend work on, the Titanic. Or maybe the Mayflower. Who would take a job for a buck an hour and work in slave like conditions? A cruise ship isn't Calcutta.

It's seriously never fails when I don't look at threads in here for a few days, I can always count that stu has some bullshit running out of his mouth here. Do you even have facts for what you say it's unbelievable that complete dribble is constant in the things that you post on zone. Wow

A childhood friend plays drums on cruise ships. Never discussed his compensation

He use to travel the world playing drums with Cirque D' Soleil. (played over 5000 shows with them)

Kept up with his itinerary on facebook and he by far the most traveled person I know. Not only did Cirque take him all over the world but on his days off he ws already  close to more out of the way places.

Plus his Canadian passport helped...

Stued Up

I am down with that description

>>>>A childhood friend plays drums on cruise ships.

The entertainers are part of the hierarchy too.   While professional musicians are not known for their high incomes, I suspect the ones doing the cruise circuits are getting paid substantially more than the cleaning staff, line cooks, and dishwashers.

Could have sworn there was a Zoner who worked on cruise ships for a while.  Hopefully, he or she will chime in on the matter.

I imagine people that do like revue shows at night have another job during the day. I bet lots of people have multiple jobs  And probably work like 12 hour shifts.

I am starting  to reconsider as the clock continues to tick

might  someone want a semi obnoxious roommate?

can't afford solo

I like how I can count on some Bumblefuck to throw shade my way when I tell the reality of Life.  Neal, did you do some Federal time for getting caught?  {Maybe I have you confused with another Bumblefuck.}

Carry on in your Brilliance.

Fact is that there are different Tiers of pay-scales for cruise-ship workers.  Call me a liar all day long, but that is Reality. I actually don't give a Hoot about your opinion if you are not  one personal contact away from an actual Worker on a cruise-ship.

Also Jail-Birds are generally Stupid, or they would not have gotten caught.

Sold out to Alumni before the public on sale scheduled for today!

The waitlist is for a potential second weekend.

2 of my Portland girlfriends got their pre-sale...

I got in on the alumni presale.

Stu, your comments to Neal about doing time are a new low for you, I think. They're also an example of an ad hominem attack, which is a logical fallacy where you attack a person, rather than that person's argument. Get a grip, man.

5 nights in Bridgeport on the way
