Debut of China Cat Sunflower

Forums:

I am typing from my office at the corner of Market and South Van Ness in SF,
literally across the street from the former location of the Carousel Ballroom which later became Fillmore West.

Just out of bored curiosity I googled the date of the first ever performance of China Cat Sunflower.

So here it is for your listening pleasure and it's pretty blistering and right in the pocket with the sonic signature of '68 era dead
oming out of a short Dark Star and flowing into chaotic sounding The Eleven.....

Just for kicks - same venue (Carousel Ballroom) June 19, 1968:
Debut performance of Not Fade Away:

(Vocal mix is a mess but it's cool to spin once.)

>This is the first Not Fade Away, and is the only NFA of 1968. They didn’t play it again until December ’69.

Thanks for this.

I love '68 Dead.

A couple years later (1970) both China Cat and NFA evolved somewhat and the Carousel became the Fillmore:

It's not the former location; the building is still there, at least for now.

I get a little chill every time I drive by it, which is fairly often because I usually use Van Ness south to get out of town.

I believe the building is slated for destruction soon, which is such a damned shame. An incredibly historic building in the music world. I've always wanted to walk through the old ballroom one time, but I doubt I'll get that chance.

I always thought the old Winterland building would have made a fine venue for the rock 'n roll hall of fame, but it was decrepid and that was a pipe dream. The Honda dealership/Fillmore West/Carousel/El Patio building however would have been PERFECT for that.

Oh well.

Babble over. Thanks for the link.

Lance - this is a question of semantics.... (and lord knows you could never accuse me of being anti-semantic!)

What I really mean is - sure there's a Honda Dealership there, but that ain't no Carousel or Fillmo......

Coolio, and thanks. Neat stuff

Hey Joe I got a patent on that.

Thread approved.

Ha ha ha ha, sorry Joe

One thing that was interesting to me, was that it's pretty obvious that the early China Cats were in a different, lower key.

Yeah, sorry about that Treble. I knew I was being nit-picky, I'm just a little obsessive when it comes to venues, especially old ones, and rarely (never) pass up a chance to blather a bit when one comes up.

Nice thread here, thanks for the info.

According to the comments, this tape was mislabeled and is really from early 1969 (Celestial Synapse at the Fillmore);

I think it was like a tuesday night or something at the Carosuel - my friend passed out but did not fall as we were all jamming and jammed

that room was the sight of the most powerful passage of music I ever had the pleasure of being floored by ( actually the blissful hallucination sans drugs of all our heads exploding, and becoming one mind was not on the floor, but in the heavens  )

Love ya Joel.  Good to see you here!

We need Jocomo in this thread.

Pedal Up,

Yep - I work for the city of SF at Market and Van Ness and  I'm a working musician.

I go by Real Guitars pretty often.  At least twice a month.  Mostly to ogle at guitars,  play a few and kill some time.

Gary Brawer is great repair guy and a legend, but for me the wait time and cost of his repair work is prohibitive.

I have an amp guy and a repair luthier who live in the Excelsior district who charge less and turn stuff over way more quickly then the one month plus wait at Brawers.

My guitar guy in particular is a legend: Rich Hoeg.  He built Weir's Blue Lightning Bolt and several of his Hoeg Caster Strats and Teles.

I play bluegrass mandolin and double bass with a couple of Bluegrass Bands.

I also play bass with a couple of rock bands.

I'll be playing the Elbo Room in SF on 1/5 and at Peri's in Fairfax on 1/12.
