Deportation is real and not for criminals only...

Forums:

Sitting here at school feeling sad as I learned this morning that one of my students will be facing big life changes come this Wednesday... Her dad is being deported back to Mexico. As far as I know, he's not a criminal.. She's an only child and I don't think she truly understands what is happening (even in 5th grade).. My heart breaks for this family and sadly, I think this will be happening more and more.. Sorry to post this here, I can't really talk about it here at school and needed a place to vent..

He'll be back. A guy I know that works for a local landscaper has ben deported 8 or 9 times. Last time he was back in CT in 6 days, lol

>>he's not a criminal..

he's here legally, but still being deported?

That's terrible Scarlet.  Families being broken up like this is unforgivable.

This is horrible for her family.

I think many Americans are torn on this issue along the lines of what Quinn said.

My dad, a recovering GOPer, when talking about the lady in Denver who's in our church, asked "why hasn't she tried to get citizenship?". It's always complex. This lady came to USA because her husband had been kidnapped 4 times in Ciudad Mexico.

It's easy to take a firm stance, like Quinn, in broad strokes. Empathy comes to the surface when individual's stories are told.

Sorry to hear that Scarlet, yes this will be happening more.

it's not that I don't have empathy, I'm just touchy about facts these days

I wasn't suggesting you don't, Quinn.

The lady cooped up in our church was convicted of stealing someone's SS#, hasn't 'assimilated' by learning English (been in USA 20+ years). It makes it tough to debate the merits of her being granted amnesty...other than her three US born children. I'm torn.

I wish I was an immigration lawyer now. or a pool cleaner

You could clean a lawyer's pool.

surfy.......

go to your room.

Only if they pay me under the table

That makes me sad, too, Scarlet. It must be so sad and confusing to the kids in families with parents being deported. It's also likely terrifying, kids thinking that if their parents (neighbors, friends, relatives) can be deported, it could also happen to them, with or without their parents. I'm so sorry this is happening.

The visual image I have of officers going from house-to-house looking for people to arrest and send away is a little too close to Nazi's coming for Jews, gays, Gypsy's, etc.

Perhaps it would help to imagine that scene from Cheech & Chong where Cheech's family gets a free bus ride to their cousin's wedding out of the El Migra raid.

Hopefully this girl's family can apply for legal immigration and re-enter the U.S.

Ned's example of the woman who has lived here 20 years and still can't speak English is indefensible.  She should have learned the language by now.

There's no money in immigration law. Maybe try water law for the payday $$$

Can we stop with the nazi bullshit already?

Many American schools teach Spanish.

 Bullshit?

>>>>Ned's example of the woman who has lived here 20 years and still can't speak English is indefensible.  She should have learned the language by now.

There are many reasons why somebody living in the US may not know how to speak English.  My wife used to represent elderly immigrant clients who were applying for USA Citizenship, but could not understand English.  Some had developmental disabilities and many had suffered trauma and other conditions that negatively affected their mental state.  They often have lack of finances.  Add to that a fear of danger from the outside world (and possible deportation), it's no wonder that many keep themselves with other expatriates and avoid participating in organized classes, etc.

IMHO, of course.

>>Can we stop with the nazi bullshit already?

I wish. Looks like we're just getting started.

These guys showed up with posters in our town over the weekend.

PS: Scatlet Fire,

You, your student, her family, and your community are in my thoughts and prayers.  "Right or wrong," we can agree that such an action is painful to those affected.

Best,

John

Farmers in the Central Valley are freaking out - this is going to be bad for business, and consumers as an estimated 60% of workers are undocumented and face deportation.

oh, but it will open up a ton of farm jobs for American citizens!

Approximately 40% of the undocumented are people who entered legally and overstayed their visas, which is a civil offense and not a crime.

Seek out your local Faith In Action or ACLU chapters to receive trainings in how to help those as risk of deportation. Education is key here. people need to know their rights, and steps they can take to protect themselves. Join a rapid response team.

notes from a recent training I attended.

Points for protection: 1. Remain silent mantener silencio You have the right to remain silent you dont have to answer their questions Tell your family not to say anything, including your children. 2. Dont open the door no abrir la peurta If ICE comes to your door, you dont have to open it (except with a valid warrant). ICE isnt allowed to claim to be local police. If asked, they need to supply their name and badge number. They must have a warrant signed by a judge. Have them slide it under the door. Make sure it has your name on it. They need a warrant, not just an order. Take a picture of the warrant with your phone, if possible, send it to your lawyer. If they have a legal warrant signed by a federal judge, you need to open the door. 3. Speak with an attorney hablar con abogado/a Use community legal services Memorize their phone number 4. Dont sign anything no firmar nada You dont have to give them your PIN for a phone. If they take your phone or computer, get a signed receipt. For more information about phone searches at the border see the EFF website (https://www.eff.org/). 5. Show red card mostrar la tarjeta roja This summarizes your rights. Use this to remind the authorities that you know your rights 6. Dont show false documents no mostrar papeles falsos 7. Dont get nervous, dont run 8. Make a family plan Make a plan for what to do in an emergency Include what will happen if you are separated from your children How will you make sure that they are with someone you trust? Have current contact numbers on childrens emergency contact card at school 9. Its your decision Use your best judgement.

our group is working on making a YouTube video in Spanish with the info above and more.

Nancy will be one of the first to get taken to the Gulag's once martial law is implemented.

When they come to take you down

I dunno, when Bannon does?

Yes, deportation is real.  If I go to mexico with no papers, I MIGHT get deproted, but more likely I'LL GO TO JAIL.

You people have been dumbed down sooooooooo much in the last 8-20 years that a guy merely ENFORCING THE LAWS THAT ARE ON THE BOOKS looks like the Devil.

Look, these are ADFULTS who came here ILLEGALLY.,

Hey they got away with not GETTING IN LINE for years? WHY THE OH SO UN COMPASSIONATE OBAMA LOOKED THE OTHER WAY INSTEAD OF BEING AN ADULT AND MAKING EVERYONW PLAY BY THE FUCKING RUKLES.

So sick and tire dfof this "Breaking up Families" bullshit!

They were adults that made a bad decision.

We don't worry about "breaking up families" of say tax evaders (which these are mostly also) do we?

nope. THE IRS ROUNDS THEM UP EVERY YEAR WITH NOT A THOUGHT TO "BREAKING UP THEIR FAMILIES"

Try doing anything REMOTELY CLOSE TO THE INVASION THAT IS CONTINUING HERE in ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD AND YOU WILL MOST LIKELY END UP IN JAIL.

period.

>>>>>They were adults that made a bad decision.

the people that were brought here as kids were adults?

Seadog, it's not an issue that is as simple as you are.

>>>>>Try doing anything REMOTELY CLOSE TO THE INVASION THAT IS CONTINUING HERE in ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD AND YOU WILL MOST LIKELY END UP IN JAIL.

Like Canada, eh?

Seadogs argument is that undocumented people would be jailed elsewhere while defending roundups, detainment, and eventual deportation here.

Um...

Exclamation point

Gravytrain, if you have no objection where is the location?

That swell crew has some cray in their manifesto alright.

Isn't it so "funny" that some Repubs are struggling to figure out how to accept the "alt right" as coalition members?

More are wising up to this gang of thugs each day.  Saw two R congress-members using the #SpecialProsecutor word on the news this morning.

need more colors, seapup

Let Snopes help you with this, Seadoggie:

Kurt, you can't talk taxes until Donald shows his.

these are people. real humans. the issues too complex to narrow it down to catch phrases. Go back far enough and few of us would pass the test.  Our united states is a baby in the world. The dominant culture here has only been around a few hundred years. Most loud mouths screaming for deportation haven't even been here half of that. We are a melting pot right? huddled masses? empathy is kind. walk a mile in an undocumented worker's  shoes before you generalize. listen to the story of your own family and then envision this child and father. Not that different really.  Came here for the betterment of their families future. Scarlet, thats sad. thanks for bringing it up though. We will all have stories like this if things keep rolling downhill.

now back to my huge tv, wifi bubble, warm house and bountiful pantry. Thanks great great grandfamily.

Ya know - this whole assimilation thing is pure 100% Bullshit.

Like living in a free country ? Speaking any damn language you want is part of free speech, get used to it, snowflakes.

If you can't handle someone not speaking english, please go to whatever Dictatorship you really want to live under and GET THE HELL OUT OF THE USA !

Here here Mr. Neck.

>> Speaking any damn language you want is part of free speech, get used to it, snowflakes.

No one in the thread complained about someone speaking another language.  They complained about someone not learning English at all.

Actually, ender,

nedb on Monday, February 27, 2017 – 12:38 pm did: "...hasn't 'assimilated' by learning English (been in USA 20+ years)"

New blood

Judit,

That's exactly what I said. Re-read my post. NedB complained about someone not learning English, not speaking another language.

I reread your post and that is what you said. I apologize. But I think it's implied when someone says that someone isn't learning English that they are speaking another language while here.

I don't find it to be a fine distinction. And think there is a good reason it's part of citizenship test.

If you continue to speak your own language in America, you could be keeping in touch with your culture and heritage. However, if you fail to learn English at all, it's very difficult to be a get a job and assimilate.

I'm not too worried about our situation. If we get booted, were gonna be alpaca farmers in Uruguay.

>>>"However, if you fail to learn English at all, it's very difficult to be a get a job and assimilate"

If you've been here 20 years I don't think you are having problems getting jobs. Even if you are, it's your own choice - like Freedom.

>> If you've been here 20 years I don't think you are having problems getting jobs.

You are debating one example and I'm talking about generalities.

Surely you understand that not speaking English would prevent you from performing at least 90% of jobs.

I don't know about where you live, ender, but there are many jobs (more than 10%) where the people who work don't speak English in California and Oregon, and probably many other states. Kitchen workers, agricultural, service, and more. Where are you that that isn't true?

Judit,

I live in Mississippi. The average household income is too low to attract immigrants.

I suppose I should have said 90% of legal employment.

Please share this ACLU video with the  Spanish speaking immigrant community in your area.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcxBD714xGg

I deal with Spanish only speakers daily, documented or not. There are many jobs for spanish speakers, construction, ag work, service jobs.  Many people work these jobs so their bilingual kids can take the next step. In our rural area, old mexican american citizen cooks, cannery workers, housecleaners, and ranch hands hand their culture down and their kids are teachers, probation officers, store owners, bosses on construction sites. All second gen kids speak english. I also know a lot of people who try to speak english but it leads to miscommunication, so that they really should be speaking spanish except to amongst friends.

How do you not pick up on the local lingo after being surrounded by it for 20 years?

I didn't start this thread as a debate but lots of good conversation flowing.. At the very least, gets people thinking outside of their homes, tv and facebook.. I'm not saying folks shouldn't be here legally.. By all means, they should but what's happening here is a family is being separated. An 11 yo has to say goodbye to her dad tomorrow for who knows how long. I can't imagine how that would feel as an adult much less a kid who was born here and had no say in the matter.. I have no answers or solutions but I have a strong compassion and my simple heart says this is just wrong..

Some parents die doing dangerous work. Some children go out with friends and never come home.

>>>>>I suppose I should have said 90% of legal employment.

Well the US population is 318.9 and there are 11 million illegal immigrants = 3.4% of the population.

I guess that 10% leaves ample jobs for them.

I mean they probably won't end up being Doctors or Engineers if that's the argument you're trying to make.

The immigrants  I know who grew up in Latin America speaking Spanish do learn  some English, but the few that are able to attend adult school classes to learn the English language are more comfortable and motivated to communicate in English with native English speakers. many are too busy working, some haven't had formal education in their own language. The second generation immigrants  learn English in school and often translate for their parents,  not unlike our immigrant relatives. Many older people have a difficult time learning a second language - I consider it a failure of our education system that unlike most developed nations Americans for the most part are are not required to learn or taught more than one language - early on. Those required 2 years of a HS foreign language are a joke.

Does Turbotax have a Spanish option?

http://www.cnbc.com/2017/02/24/heres-the-myth-about-being-an-undocumente...

> If we want undocumented immigrants to come out of the shadows, go through background checks, and seek legal employment, we should focus on actually creating "the line." The question shouldn't be, why don't illegals get in the line, the question we should be asking ourselves is, when are we going to create the line?

Can employers be punished?

AIQ, I'm in California, about 100 miles north of Los Angeles, on the coast.

Thanks, I was checking that group out, apparently they tried to spread their crap at Purdue University recently.

I read as much of the manifesto as I could stomach.  Not only openly racist but fairly draconian on sex roles too. Also, believe that the end began when people left the farm for towns during Industrial Revolution.

Classified as hate group by SPLC.

Yes, I also looked them up through SPLC. Creepy as hell--couldn't stomach their website for long. Though it feels important to know the enemy, as it were. These groups obviously feel new energy under Trump. Ugh.

Just chatted with my tax accountant. We never discussed politics before but she noticed the increase in donations I made this year to groups like the ACLU and SPLC. She let her lefty freak flag fly. Great way to start the day!

Judit, I brought up her lack of speaking English in context of debating her plight with my Dad, and others. I was not implying that speaking English should be required to be a citizen.

My wife is spending the night with her tonight. She got a full briefing on what to do if ICE or DPD shows up at the door.

I don't see mass deportation happening- it's just way too unpopular, and quite frankly isn't the right thing to do. It's totally inconceivable that 10-11 million undocumented persons are going to be rounded up and deported. Out of the 10-11 million, there's probably a small % that have been convicted of a felony, but i certainly have no problem sending serial criminals packing.

I know someone who was deported under Obama. Do i blame him for it? Absolutely not..

Here's our immigration attorney's contact info if anyone in the bay area needs good counsel on these issues. I also have a lot of experience in this area, and would be happy to help anyone that needs it!

>I don't see mass deportation happening- it's just way too unpopular,

its  popular with Trump's base.

And once they get all the private prisons built, it won't be so much about deportation as it will be detention and work camps. those crops aren't going to harvest themselves , and day laborers will be conscripted (enslaved)  to build the stupid wall.

I.C.E. raids are already happening. now they might need to slow down until they get the all the prison camps built.

Fascists will be fascists.

Boycott produce.

Look at all the jobs I created

Is there more to that article, Nanc? Seems a little light on the details

Nevermind, just saw link to the full story.

Hit and run seadoggie...w caps ...

I haven't been around the zone in quite a while so I'm still getting lots of laughs out of all the Typo's in Seadoggie's posts.  Guess that's old hat to most of you by now . . .

>>>>>>> listen to the story of your own family and then envision this child and father.

I tried that to no avail on my Trump supporting Sicilian father, even tho his parents both immigrated here right after WWI, & Sicilians were as unpopular then as Muslims are now.

>> empathy is kind. walk a mile in an undocumented worker's  shoes before you generalize. listen to the story of your own family and then envision this child and father. Not that different really.  Came here for the betterment of their families future

Immigration isn't charity. I agree with Trump in that it should be merit based. "What can you do for our economy?" not "What can we do for you and your family?"

^^^^^^^Farmers in the Central Valley are freaking out - this is going to be bad for business, and consumers as an estimated 60% of workers are undocumented and face deportation.

^^^^^^^^oh, but it will open up a ton of farm jobs for American citizens!

My Dads business sells equipment to central valley farmers. They placed allot of equipment orders lately now that the cheap labor is harder to find.

There freaking out since the farms may be underwater all summer from flooding. They should flood all farms in central valley to stop the land from sinking and building from collapsing by replenishing the groundwater.

>>...Like his predecessors in office, President Donald Trump has often said he wants to focus on purging the nation of undocumented immigrants who commit serious crimes. Last week, he said his administration had already deported “really bad dudes” and “drug lords.” Speaking in Mexico, Department of Homeland Security Secretary John Kelly insisted there would be “no mass deportations” and that the process would be done “according to human rights and the legal justice system of the United States.”

But just a few days earlier, Kelly signed a series of memos detailing how the administration will implement the president’s executive orders on illegal immigration, outlining a strategy that represents a clear escalation over the tactics used by previous administrations. Kelly wrote his department “no longer will exempt classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement.” He also provided seven priority categories for undocumented immigrants, including those merely suspected of posing a risk to public safety and others who have “abused any program related to receipt of public benefits.”

Undocumented immigrants, attorneys and people who work closely with immigrant families told The Sacramento Bee that Trump’s orders have paralyzed the region’s immigrant community. Frightened people are calling their attorneys several times a day, families are in “survival mode” and young parents are hiring notaries public to prepare letters detailing what should be done with their children should they be deported. An estimated 60,000 undocumented immigrants lived in the Sacramento region in 2014, according to a study by the nonpartisan research group the Pew Research Center..

WASHINGTON ― A 22-year-old undocumented immigrant arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Jackson, Mississippi, on Wednesday after speaking to the media about her family’s detention is set to be deported without a court hearing, her attorney said on Thursday.

Daniela Vargas, who came to the U.S. from Argentina when she was 7 years old, previously had a work permit and deportation reprieve under the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA. Her DACA status expired last November, and because she was saving money for the renewal — which costs $495 — her new application wasn’t received until Feb. 10.

On Wednesday, a spokesman for ICE said Vargas would go through court proceedings to determine whether she is eligible for some type of relief, adding that the agency would take no further action until those proceedings were completed.

But Abby Peterson, Vargas’ attorney, said ICE agents told her on Thursday that they would instead pursue immediate deportation without a court hearing or bond because Vargas entered the country through the visa waiver program, which allows certain foreign nationals to enter the U.S. for under 90 days without a visa. (Argentina was previously part of the program, although it no longer is.) By using that program, her family waived some of their rights, Peterson said.

Peterson argued that the facts of Vargas’ case should be considered, including that she received DACA relief and had reapplied to the program.

“She was 7 years old at the time [she came to the U.S.],” Peterson said. “She didn’t waive those rights, her parents waived those rights. And now she’s an adult trying to assert her own rights.”

An ICE spokesman said the agency has no additional comment on Vargas’ case and directed The Huffington Post to the statement it made on Wednesday.
