Devastated... Zoner down

Forums:

Our great good friend Box of Eyes passed away last night, after a long, hard battle against cancer.

I'm heartbroken on the one hand, angry on the other, and glad that he has been released, is beyond pain, and is at peace.

Dammit.

Oh man….

Fuck.

Vibes for his family.

Holy fuck. Rip Zorb

Damn.

Great guy.

RIP Zerb

Rest easy Zerb...

ahh shit. so sorry to hear this.

rest in peace brother.

Terrible news.  He was the best of us.  It’s gonna suck the next time my daughter says Dad remember Uncle Box Of Eyes?  She brings him up every once in a while because she thinks he has the funniest name ever.

RIP Brother.  You did well.

That is heartbreaking to hear

((((Zerb)))) such a sweet and funny as hell person

thanks for letting me know, Zeke... love to you.

Truly sad news on this day. I never had the pleasure of meeting Zerb, but was fortunate enough to get to know him through interaction here & on FB. Vibes for his family during this difficult time.

RIP Zerb.

I'm sorry to hear this -never met him -but I remember.

Love will see you through...

Sorry to hear this, condolences to his family.

RIP Brother

RIP Zerbs BOE .... Thanks for the many dvds and cds you sent me over the years at Philzone .... All That Heaven Will Allow.........

RIP, Box of Eyes (or Box of Ass as Nick would say)

Go in peace, brother

Damn, Rest In Peace BOE. Sorry to hear of his suffering from cancer, and wish him the best journey in the great beyond.

I found out recently through the work grapevine that another philzoner I have known for over 15 years passed in late 2016 due to complications from Crohns and never got to check out the viva.  He was in his late 40's.

RIP Jasperintucson, always enjoyed sharing the fun in the sun with you.

Sad news, peace to him and his family.

...he liked spreadsheets,

Rest In Peace, Box of Eyes.

((( Zerby ))) always with a wonderful smile and kindest  heart.  Been a while since I have seen him and he said he was good and was looking to more positive times, I knew something was up by his lack of presence on fb and at some music events. He was a very private guy and I was blessed to have a few good heart to hearts with him through the years, about music and life. He always had a big infectious smile and a hug for me saying " Hi fidd " , whenever we ran into each other.

I am beyond sorry to hear this but knew it was coming Zeke, my thoughts are heading out to you and a few other zoners whom I know were very close in his life. If his family sets up a fund or foundation let us know, sending all my love out to family and friends.

" The Song is ended, but the Memory lingers on " .

Terrible news.

RIP

I am so sorry heart

Very sorry to hear this. All love to his friends and family.

Rest in Peace, BOA.

Sorry to see this. May the four winds blow him safely home. RIP Zerb.

RIP dude.

(((Zerbalicious)))

Love that man, and so very grateful for the time we spent. As I just told my lady friends, we will throw the fuck down for him come March.

Thanks for all that you gave Zerb!  You touched many on your journey.  RIP

Oh man. Very sorry to read this. I feel bad for his family. This sucks.

RIP

I'm sorrowful for the great loss to our community and the Music-Loving community in general.  Today seemed to bring so much promise,  with the Sun getting us NE folks into the forties after a wicked Cold spell.

And then this news crying

It was always a great pleasure to run into Mr. Zerb at the multitude of live Music events over the years.  He was at more fine Shows than many of us put together.  A true Gentleman,  musical scholar and just the nicest guy you ever might meet.  His positive energy was infectious -- he would literally light up a room.

I know many Zoners past & present consider him a Friend & a Brother,  and my condolences go out to his Family and to our Musical Family at large.

RIP Mr. BoxOfEyes.  We miss you already.

Sorry to hear this news.  Fuck cancer.

Knew Zerb since mid-80s - he was "that" guy who loved and collected tapes of the Dead while I was left in the dust, still listening to Yes and Genesis and the Boss and 70s FM radio. We re-connected after time away around during the PLF runs at the Waterford outside the Tower, with my interests now fully driven around the GD and Phil. Since that time, we must have seen 25-50 shows together from Philly to Atlantic City, from to Penns Peak to Merriweather Post, braving the scorching heat of some Fairmount Park summer Mann Further shows as well as the under cover officers in Maryland. He had boundless energy at the pre-game and during the shows, bemoaning the "Bobby" pacing of songs but always happy in the end. I found myself tracking him in his quest to catch up with EVERY Zoner he knew would be around at the shows. I thus met many cool and wonderful people who absolutely loved Mike and this adoration was deserved.

I feel secure is stating that despite his young age, he did a lot of living, created a lot of smiles and touched so many lives and he will always have the love and respect of so many...gonna miss you buddy

This is a sad day.

Weird how the holiday months bring bad news in waves some years. My husband and I lost a dear friend on xmas eve, and we've been dealing with that in the past weeks.

RIP Zerb. Met him at CAP shows, so didn't know him that well, but liked him immediately!

Sent him encouraging messages on FB during his illness.

We've been talking a lot lately about why the good ones die too soon, and this is another example.

Much love to all as you process this passing.

Looking at Mr. Zeke's 11:40 AM photo,  it dawned on me 'That has to be the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in Reading,  PA.'

That parking garage structure is built for short,  not tall vehicles.  They have signs warning of height restriction.

I was at that DNB show (a very nice one) and had to park there,  as there were not many other options.

So one Zoner was horrified that my 'too tall' pickup truck barely scraped under the metal beams,  but we got parked and everything worked out fine.  It actually scraped a few bits of paint from the cab roof.

I've no doubt that Mr. Zerb is chuckling about that Guerilla parking maneuver somewhere now.

Pretty sure that he was at all/most of the rare East Coast DNB shows that I managed to see.  Definitely the 'Kaplan's Farm'  up in Millerton NY back when.

I'm pissed off that we will not be saying "Hello" at the next Eastern DNB run sad

RIP BOE

it just reinforces the need to hug your loved ones and try to bring light to the darkness...make sure everyone you love knows it everyday...RIP BOE

Carpe diem

 Every day is precious

love matters.  Love yourself and love others

kindness begets kindness

harsh reminders and sweet memories

RIP

Sorry for all who know and love Zerb

always a pleasure by philzone standards

RIP Box of Eyes

Ill miss the spreadsheets.  Rip brother.

This Just Sucks...

sad news indeed.it was a pleasure to meet you. RIP BOE you were loved by many

Huge loss.  I knew he was struggling but hoped he would be one of the winners.  Impossible to keep a dry eye reading this thread.  RIP Birthday Brother. You truly were "One of the GOOD ones".

Some of you will remember this nite, a wonderful memory !  When that smokin Cumbie came on He and I tore it up together, he grabbed my hand and spun me around n around ..;) These were good times in our music community...and i cherish the memories. Had to listen to it today again.

A lot of you were there...heart.

Terrible news, he was a great guy and a HUGE supporter of live music. RIP Zerb.

I am so very sad to hear of the passing of our dear friend Zerb.  The times we spent together were full of laughter, music, fun and great conversation.  I am sad there were so few of those moments, but I am so glad we shared time together.

RIP Zerb.

Very sorry to hear this. Box of Eyes will be sorely missed. RIP Zerb.

ZERBS ~ WE All Love You ~~ Four Winds Safely Home In Loving Care....

Box was truly one of the good ones.

Will always be inspired by his spreadsheet and dedication to getting out.

Peace brother. Rest now.

Strength to your family.

Keep your chins high folks who knew him. He sounds like he was a very happy person and a fine fellow to know. Consider him & yourselves lucky.

I loved his spreadsheets and the good natured humor he showed when ribbed about them. He seemed to be a fine type and was definitely one of the easties I've always wanted to meet.

On the next plane perhaps.

So I'll recognize his when that time comes, could someone please point out which one he is in that photo Zeke posted?

shit :(

rip

From my perspective, Schwa summed things up pretty well.

RIP, Mike.

Green shirt, Lance.

Funny, he looks a bit like Ed Helms in that pic.

very sorry to hear this RIP

I just have no fucking words. Been going crazy looking for that iconic Dew Baby from the Barton Hall Further show Zerby made. Anyone have it???

I am just so sad.

Love to us all, especially those closest to him.  My heart breaks for his family and dearest friends.

Thank you Zerb for being the overall stellar human being you were.  We all far better off to have known, laughed, talked, and danced with you.  XO  and peace.

Love to all Zoner family and no exceptions.

Rest In Peace, Box of Eyes, you are missed.

This REALLY sucks. I didn't know he was ill. He was a tremendously generous fellow. I always enjoyed my interactions with him.

As far as zoning, he was one that made the PZ great in the day of vines and trading. Nice to see some former posters come out of the woodwork to post about him. Remember that profile pic of the box of eyes?

Wishing love and heart strength to his family, and his family of friends, which is many of you.

Godammit.

Another very sad loss, a really sad one. We'll miss you, Zerb. He was all of the lovely things that have been posted here (and on Facebook) - one of a fucking kind.

I have a spreadsheet project to do for Viva and hope to have guidance from BOE, the spreadsheet King.

Sad to hear about Jasperintucson, too.

RIP

Box of Eyes

and Jasperintucson

it always feels too soon

Aww dang, so sorry to hear about Boxy. Whatever we are, he certainly was the best of us. Kind, generous and fun loving, I will miss him...Peace & Strength to his family...

RIP BOE

Sigh.

Peace & Love to all.

I didn't know Zerb very well, just spend a few really amazingly fun times together.

You know when you meet someone and you thing "Geez, this person just exudes all sorts of loving kindness and I want to be near them?" --- that's how I felt about him "oh, box of eyes, oh, shakedownst14, bad handle, hahaha" --What a fucking cool cat.  Bad tie-dye, but I blame Fafa. :)

Those moments in time that you get to have, they are special.  Like a little blast of niceness in our souls.  What a lovely man.

The world is lesser now without Zerby and I am sad for his family and loves and all who loved him and who he loved.  He was a good one for sure.  Let's celebrate him for a while.  I have some stories from the Capitol theater :)  All smiles for sure.

love love love.

RIP BOE. Sad news

rip box

RIP Box

Horrible news.

Always offered a helping hand to me.

So sad by this news.

Damn. Peace to all who knew him.

This is so very saddening to hear. I never met him in 3D but we communicated by email . Condolences and vibes to his family.

R.I.P. Zerby

One of the things that sticks with me about Box was at the music gatherings that I was in his company he'd be the first to say 'hey (insert zoner) this is (insert zoner) from the philzone, have you met?'. When zoner gatherings were 50 deep trying to navigate who's who was a bitch.

Big loss here.   RIP Box of Eyes.

Sorry to hear about BOE's passing. Vibes to his easty zoner family...

I'm so sorry to hear this news.  I'm glad to have met such a fun spirited person.  Peace and love to all.

Got a larger-sized pic of that Mo?

Nice. BOE helping Floops stay positive while fighting his own battle. Shows ya what kind of guy he was.

Right, Slick? A gem.

I have (had) the original my hard drive, but it doesn't seem to be working :(

RIP BOE!! Such a great person and I always enjoyed chatting with him in the virtual world! He'll be missed. heart

Dear Box,

It's taken me a few day to write this because I'm sad and angry at how life is so unfair. I'm listening to the JRAD show thinking about how passionate you were about the muse and how much love you shared with others. Thank you my sweet friend.

I will miss your beautiful smile and your genuine, huge, heart to heart hugs. You were a joy at shows and made everyone feel special and loved. The ones that knew you the best are hurting. You left us too soon!

Knowing you are no longer in pain eases my heart but doesn't make the hole you have left in this universe any smaller. Rest in peace sweet Box. Thank you for being so protective of the ones you loved and sharing your beautiful soul with us. You are sorely missed and will never be replaced.

From the bottom of my heart and with eternal love,

Merri

it floored me to see this thread a couple days ago, and it's taken me a couple days to process it internally

I'm not on Facebook so I didn't see this coming

suffice it to say that Zerb and I first became friends on the Zone due to shared musical preferences and his effervescent wit and enduring positivity and kindness which cut right through the black screen... and then later through his unbelievably generous mailings of music CDs and video DVDs

we first bonded in person via our mutual love for the David Nelson Band when I interloped to the Northeast for DNB's late-September 2010 run of 4 shows... the peak of that mini-tour was of course the 9/25/2010 Saturday killer camp-out show at Kaplan's Barn in Middleton, NY (which is where the photo below was taken)... these were some of the best of times

Keyshawn,Zerb,GFish,unknown,Robin,ChefBill,Jeff_DNB,Kaplan'sBarn,9-25-10.jpg

I saw and partied with Zerb on two other occasions, when I again traveled east for shows... Nov. 5-7, 2015 for Phil & Friends at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester, NY (Phil's friends included 60% of the DNB = Nelson, Sless, & Molo)... then May 11-15, 2016 for another eastie DNB run, which was the last tour we shared together. 5/13/16 at the Lincoln Music Hall, in Reading, PA was a truly memorable show with a huge contingent of Zoners in attendance & some epic pre- and post-game revelry... the photo below, taken right after that Reading show, warms my heart to this day

2016-5-13_DNB_LincolnMusicHall,Reading,PA_ZonerCrowd_Lyn,Gloria,Zeke,Saint,Zerb,Voodoo,Sless,GaryFish,Kate,TomSchwadude,Fafa,Alex,Jill,MtnStateKate,MerriweatherGirl(finger).jpg

the last time Zerb & I connected in person was at the final show in that run -- 5/15/16 at Gypsy Sally's in Washington, D.C. ... which is where the ecstatic selfie posted above by Voodoo was taken, and which I've copied & inserted again below... THIS is the way I will remember Zerb and the special bond that he & I shared

Zerb,Gary,Kate_DNB 5-15-2016_GypsySally's,Washington,D.C._PostedByVoodoo on VivaLaZone after Michael Zerby (BoxOfEyes) passed away about 1-9-2018.jpeg

I will always remember the infectious positive attitude and outlook that Zerb carried with him and which he spread to everyone he touched

Rest in Peace, dear friend... I love you more than words can tell

DewBaby_MorningDew,BartonHall,2011_animated_flashing_PostedByBoxOfEyes_Zerb_cool.gif

Touching tributes to an amazing guy. Thank you for sharing, Garyfish and Merri.

we shared many many shows.  Thank for the goodness man.

2012: From zoning I got an invite to meet-up with Zerb before a Hot Tuna show in Harrisburg. There he introduced me to 710.

A few months later I saw a flyer for a litte bluegrass fest  "elsefest" 15-20min from my home, the Dusters were headling. There he introduced me to Chris & Robin.

( I started to figure out all of his show friends were Zoners smiley )

About a year later a band Zerb was real excited about was playing in Harrisburg, that is when I met Saint and Jerman.

It's always been about the music & the people. I have a habit of showing up so I got to share many nights with Box these past few years, chasing Cabinet shows and getting down with Phil. There would have been many more but first and foremost Zerb was a father. His girls came first.

Many are still feeling his loss, Nupsdog & Dedicated Mama, Si-Head, Garyfish, Kaitkins, Somanyroads, Zerb introduced us personally, Fafa, Disco, Charlie Murphy & Soularlite, JLP, and for many more of us Zerb was our common denominator and I will always love him for that.

Among a group of characters he was a man of character.

ZERBIMG_4342 (800x640).jpg

It is funny looking at the cast of characters Mr. VooDoo wrote of.  I have met most of them,  attended shows together,  hijacked freight trains, the usual DeadHead stuff.

My funny BoxOfEyes tale goes like this :: there was a Summer Further show at the Mann (formerly 'Robin Hood Dell West') and I approach the gate in my vehicle,  see the parking fee collector ahead,  and detour into Fairmount Park which is adjacent to venue,  and forever Free Parking.\

All the other big-spenders are parked there as well.  We share a Beer and chat. It is ten feet to the actual Mann Center lot across a shrubby ditch.

So I'm strolling around there and taking in the scenery,  and of course the first person I run into is Mr. BoxOfEyes.

I'm describing it the way I remember it...

We already knew each other from the show before or the show before that and each said "I just got here and you are the first person I run into."

So it sounds quite silly,  but at the time we had a Good Laugh.

Hate these threads.

Condolences to all involved.

Box was a righteous fellow.

Awesome Garyfish ! what a  great Pic ! I Am telling You Right Now Garyfish is One Of The Nicest Humans anyone Could Know ! I Am Sure Zerbs Felt That way.

My heart aches for all the folks that were closer to him, and there to support him thru his illness. Sending out continued thoughts to all of you, and his family <3. I only knew Zerb thru our community and shows, but when I saw him he always had a big smile, and his passion for music was truly apparent . All the pics and posts above are a wonderful tribute and I hope it brings those grieving some comfort knowing how he was loved.

((((((( heart )))))))

Only met Mr. Box of eyes the one time at the DNB Jersey shows. He a was very nice guy. Did not exchange numbers but I remember thinking that it would be a lot of fun to see him at another show.
