Awesome. Thanks Langerado, I appreciate it.

Saw him try and jam at the Jammys one year on Warf Rat.  Phil eventually turned his bass off and left the stage.  Always puzzled me how he ended up back with Phil.  But what do I know....

Sure he jammed. Perhaps not in hippie twirly fashion but there was much jamming.

Loved the NYE show at the BGP. Rock show.

That may have also been the year Mayer played that god awful cringe worthy opening set.

>>>>Saw him try and jam at the Jammys one year on Warf Rat.  Phil eventually turned his bass off and left the stage.

Oh yeah I was at that show below MSG. It was fucked up. When Phil left the stage it reminded me of when Jerry used to turn off his guitar and leave the stage in a huff when they’d go into drums.

Im pretty sure that’s the same show where Jill Lesh and Cat Popper had a dust up back stage too.

>>>Loved the NYE show at the BGP. Rock show.

With the exception of the night he couldn't go because of 'food poisoning' (or whatever), I thought that whole run was a sloppy, fucked up mess, just like RA himself was.

And I really wanted to like him, but he finally lost me for good when he completely fucked up, and ultimately derailed, the Terrapin on NYE.

no < for PLF.

if ryan isnt jamming its probably because hes busy actually making new music, releasing albums, and experimenting with new sounds.

Yep -- theater at MSG, I'm still stuck on Felt Forum.   It was definitely weird when Phil just stopped..I could only imagine being on that stage. I'm pretty sure Cryin is oblivious but the rest of the band was probably feeling pretty weird.  Not sure about Cat v Jill but that was definitely during the years that Jill was feeling her oats.

With the exception of the night he couldn't go because of 'food poisoning' (or whatever), I thought that whole run was a sloppy, fucked up mess, just like RA himself was. <<<

That middle show with Barry at the Warfield was certainly a good one, yea. Fun run.

For posterity...

Sad Hall  - I Agree on His Sloppiness and Even Trainwreck Times ! I have Seen Him A Number Of   Times and Always Enjoyed - Give him another Try Hall In The Future if so.

He and Phil are Obviously NOT Friends Anymore.

Is There a Link to the 12/29/05 Show ?

12/29/05 - Possibly my favorite Phil & Friends show I've ever seen. Open, searching, floating, driving, falling, rising... the deep end. Mistakes? Sure. Brilliance in the moment?  IMO absolutely. And no one has sung the Jerry songs better than Ryan.

"Sloppy" = Grateful Dead = not for everyone.

https://archive.org/details/phil2005-12-29.AUD.Art.Cube.Naks.flacf/phil2...

I had no idea that Ryan was going to be there that night and had no idea who he was when the show started. But by the end of the night (or by the time Adams had to leave early because of "food poisoning") I was all-in with Ryan Adams and remain a huge fan to this day.

And it's funny that this show has always been so reviled around here, considering that the Sacred Sless is front & center all through it.

HMMMMM-he is a good songwriter and his own shows seem fun.

However, he did not JAM well with Phil-it was quirky and not musical enough.

Funny that someone referred to this NYE run of shows-I specifically flew from Colorado to see this run knowing Ryan was NOT announced and wincing from the 05 phil/ryan shows I had seen. Even the Red Rocks 05 where I was delighted to see my cuz Scott Law play Wolf with Phil for the soundcheck for an almost empty house and in a great musical mood, The Phil show with Ryan was disappointing. I also noticed that they didn't do the deeper more difficult tunes because of him.

So Ryan shows up at the Fillmore show (my first visit) unannounced-I was bummed.

Then at the Warfield (first visit) Phil makes the comment that Ryan will not be there (as if he was expected) and they go on to do a great show-best of the three IMHO.

Then NYE-Ryan's back and they do a really tame, disjointed show-crushing me for not expecting him and because I had seen a great run through 12/31/84 at what was then the San Francisco Civic!

Thanks for letting me vent.

Just looked at your post Lance-funny!! Check out recordings of 12/29 and 12/30 and compare!

Waaaaaaaaa scott

at the time Phil Loved Ryan - Loving The Cold Roses CD Release   ! Phil Even Said It In Posts at Philzone - I Bought It and Was Lord Henry Approved Too yes

whatever plf. good album bad fit for Phil straight up.

False advertising :)

devilcryingangry

They see to have a mutual admiration as Phil still covers him and even throws in a new RA tune every so often.

“I’ve seen Phil Lesh do musical things that were tantamount, in my opinion, to a pagan ritual in which you literally saw an apparition. I’ve seen him do that musically. I have seen him destroy reality and look at me as if to say, ‘I’ve just destroyed reality.’ I’ve seen it, and a lot of people who listen to his music or that kind of music understand that side is possible. So because I don’t know a lot of scales and I have my own version of that, I want to figure out how to do that with songwriting.”

HILLARY!

>>>>lol. is that what was happening?

wasn’t it?

It was EERILY SIMILAR when Phil did it to Ryan at the Jammy’s

Hey Lance - I'm completely with you about that Fillmore show.  Starting with the weirdness of the John Mayer Trio, I spent the Phil sets wondering if it was the best show I ever saw or the worst.  The funny thing is I've listened to the show numerous times over the years and still can't decide.

oh jeez, you guys are going to to that drumz thing AGAIN?

exactly

Im pretty sure that’s the same show where Jill Lesh and Cat Popper had a dust up back stage too.

It wasn't the first time that their has been a dust up arguing about whether Agnostic Front or Minor Threat was more influential and it won't be the last.  I'm glad blood wasn't spilled.

Good point I forgot about all of that until I read Joel Selvin’s book.

That Ryan quote jimbo posted about Phil being able to destroy reality through means of musical improvisation is pretty sick

LOL @ Ryan Adams and his ego trying to put out THREE albums in one year

https://mobile.twitter.com/katyturnbc/status/1082451910135857153?s=21

@TheRyanAdams is releasing three new albums this year (3!). The first is called BIG COLORS. Here’s the cover. Can’t wait to dive in.

I could understand that.

Ryan is striking us with a hot iron.

Good idea to get all those ideas out of your system; whether good or not

He's probably on the lamb too....

You’ve produced albums Blue. Would you advise any musician in their right mind to put out THREE albums in one year or would you advise them to edit it down to ONE album for obvious reasons?

Didn't he put out 3 albums in 05'?

Yes, and they were all good.

Cold Roses, Jacksonville City Nights, 29

Hell, The Beatles put out 5 pretty good albums in 1964.

anyone got a release date for the first one?

Wasn't too fond of 29, cold roses didn't necessarily need to b a double album and so far JCN is his masterpiece.

haven't really been fond of any of his albums since easy tiger and even that was a mixed bag of nardnailia.

still I'm rootin for that lil wacky guy

I liked JCN and 29 a lot.  Agree Cold Roses could have been trimmed.

>>ou’ve produced albums Blue. Would you advise any musician in their right mind to put out THREE albums in one year or would you advise them to edit it down to ONE album for obvious reasons?

No unless your are Beck and understand story boards.

Or ~

From what little I have read bout Ryan; he's like me, but without the fragile like over sensitivities akin to the late Marc Bolan.

Ryan seems to have become paperless, to avoid any loss of creative content and clutter.

Remember the mess Russell Crowe had going in a Beautiful Mind.

Police check on Ryan, he's there with his hair all Beethoven like, with sticky pads on he wall.

He's just avoiding creative disruption lol

One album a month is fine with me

I mean is it really rocket science

Only buckethead could do one album a month

>>>>>Hell, The Beatles put out 5 pretty good albums in 1964.

Well, really only two - For Sale and Hard Day's Night. The rest were dif. named, dif. tracked versions of the above for dif. countries.

>>>Agree Cold Roses could have been trimmed.

you two shut your dirty whore mouths

29 was so bad I forgot it existed but even worse was that Nardinals release IV.  The best song on that album is Crystal Skull and that song sucks worse than the 2018 Zonies did.

Bucky, I can calculate your education level based on your posts.

Happy 20th birthday to The Sopranos

I'll thank u to watch your language when addressing a lady, sir.

besides she, myself and many others agree with that sentiment.

just off the top of my head, who the hell enjoys that 'beautiful soda' song?

we all know RA has a hard on for soft drinks but no one wants to hear a phoned in dance number about him fucking a big gulp.

ymmv

That shitty Cherry Lame song could’ve been cut too.  It’s probably a soda fucking song too.

It totally is!

It's a metaphor for his lack of sexual attraction for untraditional flavors

Meadowlake Street and Dance All Night aren’t very good either.

We down to one non-soda sexual 80 min disc yet or should we keep going?

>>>>who the hell enjoys that 'beautiful soda' song?

DID YOU KNOW?

“Beautiful Soda” came to be from a jam session where the Cardinals were riffing on the old Spinal Tap song “Gimme Some Money”

I've never been able to get into his music, I've tried. I'm no longer trying.

I don't mind it, but I never seek it out.

Adams, Jim James, Jeff Tweedy, etc. -- great song writers that after hearing that they were geniuses one too many times began to think that every piece of shit that comes to their head is worthy enough to lay down on record. They're somewhat right in the fact that no matter what they release there is a certain audience that will buy it.

Jeff Tweedy has only ever released one album under his own name. Otherwise, pretty Lol.

I've never really seen a good Ryan Adams show in Chicago.  Still find his message to Jim DeRogatis funny.

>> >>>>who the hell enjoys that 'beautiful soda' song?

Let's not forget the heavy-metal inspired Icy Monster-sized Diet Sprite

Creators gotta create, gotta make that $, gotta strike when inspiration hits.

i can't imagine the pressure most of these artists r under to pump out new material.

the well's bound to run dry at some point.

richard Thompson's only been releasing an album every 2 or three years for the past decade or so and they've just felt more and more forced to me for the most part.

that said, I feel like the 3 albums of 05' Adams put out happened more organically.

This time it feels like a weird premeditated flex, almost like he's been stock piling a bunch filler and is ready just to go with a big push of quantity over quality

Just read Emmylou is on one of these new 3 albums so that track probably won’t suck.

Nice, were all of these cut at electric ladyland or just the first one?

saw a pic of him the other day sitting at a mixing board there with that wacky muppet looking don was in the background

Tweedy is Wilco, for years now anyway, and I'm considering that output as well.

I couldn't imagine the pressure that anyone would feel with the 'shit! I can't top my last one!'.  As completely basic as this sounds we need some old fashion marrying your 12 year old cousin, shooting up your ex wives car, cutting your husband dick off type of shit.  The saccharine 'I drink chai latte 3 times a day' isn't conducive to making killer music.  I'm probably 1000% wrong...

I liked the 1-2 punch of Star Wars / Schmilco. I think Tweedy's been on a low-key brilliant writing streak between those two, the Tweedy (band) album(s), and then his album of all original stuff (that just came out, under his own name). But that's me, I love a good writer on a good writing streak. I think it's good for Wilco, too, and I like that band a lot.

Ryan Adams doesn't scratch that same itch for me, at all. I'll go through a streak of his stuff – because he's got some great songs – but I still don't feel like I've taken note of a particular run of albums of his – not since that EP Jacksonville City Lights, and some of Cold Roses –  that drives me crazy. That's me. It's good for him and good for music fans (I guess) if he does decide to put out three albums and two custom pinball machines in 2019.

I agree that bagging on musicians cranking out music probably isn't the right angle to take.  It wasn't my intention but that's exactly what I did.

Ryan will have some good tracks, mostly filler, and even though I not a huge fan of Tweedy's latest output; he'll put out more cohesive records.

Im still sticking to my guns that rock and roll is missing the lunacy that made it so great.

Society has changed.  You can’t do a Lovelight rap about banging 14 year olds in 2019 like Pigpen did in 1969.

That's a good point, lotta guys gonna write what they know.

tweedy is especially committed to that whole impressionist ethos.

dad gonna dad rock.

If you feel like singing a song
And you want other people to sing along
Then just sing what you feel
Don't let anyone say it's wrong

And if you're trying to paint a picture
But you're not sure which colors belong
Just paint what you see
Don't let anyone say it's wrong

And I love that I don't know whether that custom pinball comment was a joke or not

Just read Emmylou is on one of these new 3 albums so that track probably won’t suck.

Double that for the tracks with Bob Mould on them.

IMO, Ryan Adams is at his best when he isn't edited. There is a strange type of genius that flows from him when control is nowhere to be found.

Slightly different tangent:weren't many of the great songs lyrics composed in 15 minutes and then the music followed with another 15 minute effort

and yes some of the inspiration may have come from 3 to 5 years of living life and feeling

I do miss my grandpa rock late 60s early 70s.     there was a lot of energy and  in fact societal evolution to draw from.  Side not calling myself grandpa.  Calling myself grandpa With five kids maybe someday I will actually become a grandpa who the hell knows

I want a raging song about adulting

Ya too much production and electronics just sit down and let it spill out and put it on tape

Poor paint on the canvas       don't spend months assembling Legos

>>>You can’t do a Lovelight rap about banging 14 year olds in 2019 like Pigpen did in 1969.

remember when u and Delia had that argument over the youngest age pig ever sang the lil' schoolgirl was?

I recall her attempting to justify all kinds of ages that would put her very much at odds with today's celebrity sex offender crack down and women's movement.

i wonder how she's doing?

i hope well

The concept of Ryan Adams is in many cases, more intriguing than the output. Ditto with Tweedy.

Craig Finn kicks both their asses.

>>>Craig Finn kicks both their asses.

ill have to disagree with that

Craig Finn wouldn't even agree with that.

Did Ryan Adams jam>>>>

Never saw him with Phil live but I watched a couple videos and was wondering if that motherrfucker was even playing guitar at times. Looked like he was faking some chords at moments

Ryan Is Awesome One of my Favorite Musicians  especially Rare tunes that are Not on CDs

Ryan put out a new song today but only on a station near Boylestown, PA. It’s called “Boylestown Girl” and it’s about a model from Pennsylvania who recently broke up with him and caused him to relapse. Ryan recently posted a picture of him with a “60 day” sobriety chip, so hopefully he’s doing better today.

Here, for you now, is “Boylestown Girl”: https://instaud.io/39CO?fbclid=IwAR1XrJPIRiTdfbRdPLPK1GTW2RDc8xf98O4i_DB...

id day it’s pretty average from him. It certainly never comes close to reaching the sonic heights of, let’s say, “Cherry Lane”, his masterpiece from the brilliant and critically acclaimed “Cold Roses” album.

^

Not sure where you got the above information above as to the genesis of "Doyelstown Girl", not Boylestown. Their breakup was not the cause of Ryan's "relapse." I was sorry to see that relationship break up and it wasn't recent.  She is a sweetheart.

Case In Point Me And Ryan LOVE Women !! It Can be painful at times.

so you must know “Charlie”, who they’d walk in the park? I bet he’s a good boy

R we finally getting to the "more RA than thou" segment of this thread?

I hope so. I am especially looking forward to the DJ Reggie karaoke portion of the competition.

Craig Finn kicks both their asses

The Springsteen wannabe? Not in this lifetime

After being told about them for many years and missing the boat, I saw Hold Steady at Mtn Jam of all places and was an immediate fan.  There isn't any pretense, no artificial angst,  just kick ass songs.

>>>Let's not forget the heavy-metal inspired Icy Monster-sized Diet Sprite

interesting, I had always heard icy monsters was about him becoming physically aroused after pouring a monster energy drink over ice, but I'm not as familiar with his pre-cardinals material so I might b mistaken.

>> The Springsteen wannabe? Not in this lifetime

I thought that was Bryan Adams? So confused now...

No, he's directing that at Craig Finn from Hold Steady.  He's a fan of the Boss but take one listen and tell me if you consider him a 'Springsteen wannabe'.

Being a fan or not of Springsteen is irrelevant to the conversation. Listen to the word play in the lyrics. Finn has always said in interviews he was a fan of the Boss.

Craig Finn sounds like he arranged for a huge pile of blow for his friends to make it through his set.

Wasn't familiar with Finn so I checked out his last solo album.

i wasn't too wowed by it but it was listenable and the guy's a decent wordsmith.

i think I liked it more than the last few RA albums.

having a harder time getting into the hold steady, what's their best album?

here's a taste test challenge in a cheap attempt to rile this thread up.

who wrote the better 'rescue blues'?

finn: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ms7zqESXIuM

vs

adams: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=HGBH7_ziPDc

Finn of course.  Ryan probably ate rocks for three days just so he could get the perfect damaged voice. Finn scrawled down the lyrics and went into the studio.

having a harder time getting into the hold steady, what's their best album?

I am most fond of Boys And Girls In America and although some may say it's the custie choice, love the song Stuck Between Stations from that album.

The Hold Steady is at it's best when digested live. Craig Finn is, at times, every bit as spastic as Peter Garrett of Midnight Oil, and that's a compliment. Tad Kubler, the lead guitarist is one of those players that can plug into any genre and kick ass. Highly under rated. Although Craig is a fan of Bruce Springsteen, he is much more a Deadhead than a Tramp. Hell, he even has a dancing bear on his main guitar.

having a harder time getting into the hold steady, what's their best album?<<<

Start with their first album Almost Killed Me, then maybe jump to Boys and Girls in America, which is their third I believe.

i hate this thread.

Were the graphic details of RA's soda pop fetish too much for u, turtle, or did u just hate both rescue blueses?

Just heard that the third album is called “Black Hole”

bump for turtle

Judging by this track the first of the three albums will suck

https://youtu.be/X3_lYd9MrjY

Ashes and Fire was the last good album he put out, hopefully these three will give us some good tracks.

I finally made it all the way through 'prisoner'.

it's actually pretty good for a newer, gay ass Ryan Adams album

I was just on Amazon to preorder Big Color and found a cd I did not know exsisted, The Prisioner B Sides, I'm liking it so far
