Did You Ever Have An Auditory Mashup Happen Live?

Forums:

Was watching VFTV 7/8/90 on TV and Eyes was playing. I wanted something different so I go to que up some music on Pandora via Sonos.

Widespread Panic playing Arleen with The Dirty Dozen Brass Band comes on the speakers while Eyes was still on the boob tube.

My mind split into two halves, each loving the different input, but those halves ended up dancing with each other in a weird jazz psychedelic intertwining.

Yes I'm still kinda high........

when i was first getting into GD music something that would happen all the time is id be listening to one show and pulling up pages for other shows i wanted to check out or other music in general. one of  these other tracks would start playing behind the show i was initially listening to and i would always think they were embarking on some kind of face melting psychedelic avant noise jam for a few seconds before realizing it was another show autoplaying in the background. im not really sure what that says about my musical literacy...but it is what it is.

That's it right there! The 2 different things become connected through our mind wanting things to make sense.

Falling asleep last year camping at Hulaween.  We try to be in bed before midnight, so interesting to lay there in the tent drifting off to the sounds of whoever was still on the main stage plus two or three EDM acts on the other stages.

What about a stroll thru the GD lot. You would pick up one car's audio playing Dead, or a drum circle, and as you walked you would slowly transition to what the next car was playing as you walked, while hearing the last car slowly fade out. It was like Tarzan swinging from musical vines as you made your way thru the jungle lot.

^^^^^Fabes, have you ever listened to Infrared Roses?   If not, check out the opening track:   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uFCdjLpp-uI

We've all been there  ;)

Good times!

What about a stroll thru the GD lot.

for sure! ive had the same kind of experiences ive described above in the lot as well. maybe   youre sitting with friends and someones car stereo is playing a show, then another car or dude with speakers goes by playing a different show, and for a few moments it sounds like the show youre listening to is growing in complexity and intensity before you realize its actually another piece of music leaking in.

theres a sort of "mildly interesting" effect ive noticed here - during those few seconds when my brain is a bit confused, and the addition of a second track makes it sound like the first track is growing in complexity, if i were to slow down time a bit and pay more attention, i think i would pretty easily and very quickly be able to pick up on the fact that there are more instruments playing than there should be, or that there are tones and sounds out of place(like hearing B3 organ but youre playing a keith era show), but in the moment, when im focused on other stuff, it can take a relatively long time to notice there's actually 2 tracks playing. sometimes ill even notice the music seems more intense, check what track is playing, turn it up and it still takes like 10-20 seconds after all that to realize ive got a second track autoplaying in the background.

come to think of it, the sound of 2 GD improvisations playing alongside each other before you fully realize its 2 tracks actually reminds me a bit of the ways the sound/music can change when youre listening to a GD improvisation while using nitrous oxide. not psychedelics in general but specifically nitrous oxide. i dont know if i can put it into words beyond that.

How about two different versions of the same GD tune playing simultaneously?

Something like Dark Star, or any other long piece without too many chords.

^^^^That's It For the Other One off Anthem of the Sun does just that

Yes it does.

Matt would have the video on a different Dead show....and watch how long it took me to notice.  The first time, I wasn't paying much attention, until Bobby had Jerry's voice....then I realized the lip syncing was all wrong....

Since then, he puts video on something like Gwar, while playing  a mellow Dead tune.  I've gotten used to it, and insist he show some nature show instead.   But those first few times....a great trick to play on your friends.

That's a trick that would cause communal meetings with my friends to happen just to experience the experience again and again.

Thanks for the idea!
