This beach, only accessible by a 20-min trail hike, is in the same zone as the night 3 location: https://bigislandhikes.com/honomalino   Pretty cool!

I know a similar deserted beach north of Kona airport, but there is a group parking area.

Found some really affordable yurts for rent (under $100/night!) in Oceanview (Night 1) as well as a private Hipcamp campground ($45/ night) there...... if anyone is looking, i could send you the links, email in profile.

I love to research travel.... happy to help if you are considering this trip but don't enjoy the research!

Google maps says that there are buses to Oceanview but I haven't confirmed that yet.

Zoner Jam Hawaii on the 30th?

Honomalino is a great spot. Black sand beach and decent snorkeling. Just beware the local Miloli'i residents "stink-eye" if it's the w/e and the beach park is in use.

This is the definitive guide book for all things semi-secret on the BI:

I was interested in a long (very) hike to Halape campsite in the Hawaii volcanoes np. It's extremely remote, exposed (no shade) but the coves in and around the coast are excellent snorkeling site (when calm). I've done the Puna coast trail to Apua point, where i had my own private snorkeling aquarium. Out and back in time for the DNB show at the Akebono!

Some of the best DNB shows ever were at the Akebono. Miss that place.

I wanna get away, can't though...

sigh

^^^ well ya never know, something might change to allow you to make the trip... because change is a constant!

Walstib, thanks for those extra hike ideas... snorkeling coves sound pretty dreamy to me... will take a look.

didn't even attempt snorkeling last trip because i had a bloody knee from slipping on wet lava.

..... and still need to call that Park office about the valley hike.

I think I'm about to get a job offer... will need to negotiate 2 trips if all goes my way.... didn't think I would win one this soon, but hey, i do need a job in the long run.

I think that this is great news that this trip is happening. It's pretty surprising to me too, because I don't sense David has the stamina to do much touring anymore (and who would, at his age?). Probably hard to turn down a trip to Hawaii though! I'm sure the shows will be fantastic.

If Hall goes, I'll go.

>>>>> I don't sense David has the stamina to do much touring anymore

Hence the "sunset" tour?????

Aka Early Bird tour

...not that there's anything wrong with that

>>>something might change to allow you to make the trip

I saw the announcement for these shows while I was in Hawaii over New Years, plus I'm planning a Himalayan Trek for November (that Zang is apparently joining me on ;)), so there's really no chance of this happening.

Woo hoo:  Got good job news today and they were cool w/ my travel plans!

So, just booked my flight to KOA for a 10-day trip... I may work from there the first 5 days... but it'll still feel like vacation.

I hope I'll see other Zoners there... This could be the final Hawaii trip for the band, I'm thinking.... and it's such an easy trip to do for west coasters.

Congratulations!

Happy for you Christine.  Enjoy Big Island.

^^^  thanks!!

finally feel like i accomplished something and it's always nice to be wanted by an employer, LOL.

even though i'll still be stuck living in Portland, i'll be working on a super interesting topic: leading media strategy, inbound media relations and content development for Portland's big transition to a new government structure that is more equitable: ranked-choice voting, hiring a city manager for the first time ever, doubling the size of City Council and adding representation by geographic districts, and changing the powers of the Mayor.

plus, i'll get my awesome benefits back and still get to work remotely 1/2 time.

Looks like I am going to be able to go.  Looking at traveling on the 27th and the third. 7  nights in paradise with my favorite band and family.

Open to lodging options, ideas, etc.

I guess I'm going to the Himalayas

Congrats, LLOLLO!

Yeah, congrats Llollo!  Hope you find a permanent, happy home at your new position. Sounds interesting. See you in Hawaii.

I'm happy for you that you are able to go on this one, Mark.

^^^ Thanks Mark and Judit!

Everyone deserves a trip to the islands!

The DNB Web Manager updated the website for the non-FB fans: https://www.nelsonband.com/2023/01/dnb-hawaii-2023/

I don't know yet friends. I will not be at the 1st, but would maybe like to pull one or both of the last shows....

looks like they canceled direct to koa from socal on my dealio which complicates things.

q: anyone ever use the local bus routes? is that a possibility? if i go will be on super saver budget as i got chit goin' on.

Hey Turtle, I've been researching budget travel on BI already...

if your email is in profile, I can send you what I've found early next week.. returning from Denver Monday eve.

Found a cool campground w/ pool in Oceanview, $45 / night.

uh how was the show? looks good on paper...

glad ya warmed the band up for me.

not there, sad to report...   paging MarkD and Garyfish... where's the stream?

Heard a rumor that Wiltsie was going to audio stream Saturdays show at Chuck and Gloria's on Mixler.  Radio DNB.

Solid show last night. Not spectacular to my ears but solid.  Pete did a great job singing Lazy River Road.  There were other highlights for sure.

Thanks, Mark.

By the way, I saw Sherrill's post of what she called the "early morning people" before getting on the plane - you didn't look like an early morning guy, you looked like yourself and like you'd stayed up all night.

I hope you're having a really good time. heart

I was.  We left my house at 10:30 pm, drove to our friends house in Belmont.  Got there at 2, too early, so we ate at Denny's. Got to their house at 3:30 and the limo arrived at 4:30 to take us to the airport 45 mins away in San Jose. Got on the plane about 6:40.  Slept maybe 3 hrs on the plane. Took me a couple days to adjust.  Went snorkeling for second time today. Second show tomorrow.  Life is good.

MarkD and Downstrream wrote asking me to tell everyone that the stream is tonight.

Jon Hart's excellent recording of Krasno-Moore Project @ Chapel

great Liz Reed

(sorry to highjack this thread)

videographer Ray Charon has uploaded another pro-shot video from the DNB mini-tour of the Big Island... this one's a 32-minute sequence from the 1st set of the 3/31/2023 show at the Hale Halawai Pavilion in Kailua Kona...

All Things Must Pass* > Long Gone Sam > I Can See Clearly Now (tease) > Peggy-O
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MgWh_fd1MMY

* 3rd time played (12/31/22, 3/24/23, 3/31/23)

@Walstib -- Thanks a bunch for the Krasno-Moore link! Look forward to listening tomorrow eve.
Right now I'm listening to DNB @TheEleven -- so so good, fills my heart!

another amazing video was uploaded to the LMA today... it's a sizzling 20-minute version of Any Naked Eye as the rousing 1st-set closer at The Eleven on 4/1/23... and that's no April Fool's! The extended jam from about 6:30 to 16:30 features some stratospheric guitar work by Barry and Pete and some amazing close-ups of the onstage interplay... hana hou !!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6H1k1Crjwgg&t=11s

^^^ for real!  I sent the LMA link to taper buddies in Seattle and even they were impressed... and complimented the quality recording too.

That was serious high adventure music right there.

wow

bands still purty damn good...

thanks for the links fish.

did the sam link...i need to prep for the others.

still need to be in a proper space to re-hear and see pete's stunning stella.

a couple days ago another high-quality video was posted from DNB's 2023 Hawaii tour... two songs over about 27 minutes, from the 2nd set of the 3/31/2023 show at the Hale Halawai Pavilion in Kona-town: Coconut Wireless and Suite at the Mission

the CW is one of the better ones I've heard over the years, with some especially spirited jamming from about the 8:00 - 15:00 minute marks... and the Suite that follows ain't too shabby either

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtTOZ2BNEas&t=23s

aaaaand... the videos keep on comin'

this one is a nearly 36-minute sequence from the end of the 2nd set at The Eleven, the 3rd and final show of DNB's Big Island mini-tour (complete setlist above)... namely:

Drums/percussion >
Dream in Blue >
Jupiter Hollow >
Kick in the Head (reprise)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJGqBWnUJVw

if you're short on time, I recommend listening to the first 4 minutes of the video (which is a rare DNB Drums segment featuring Wally, Barry, Mookie, and Pauly's arm on shaker), and the last 5 minutes which is the triumphant culmination of Kick in the Head (the entire Kick reprise starts at about the 19:30 mark)

High Adventure, indeed!

here's another video that was uploaded just a couple days ago... from DNB's mini-tour of the Big Island, a 25-minute segment from the end of the 1st set of the 3/31/2023 show at the Hale Halawai Pavilion in Kailua-Kona... Just A Season > Iko

all of these are high-quality, multi-cam, & pro-shot by videographer Ray Charon

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qn93x1sb1zQ

the Aloha spirit from those shows lives on!
