DNB at the Chapel SF on June 17

John Molo out?

Yeah this band just dropped a peg. Maybe two.

$310.00+$59.10 Fee for table of 2 = $369.10  so that works out to $184.55 per person, per set without Molo

no spot taken!

custie up

How much is that per minute JJ???

Turns out Phil's shows are a bargain.

Mostly it shows how much it costs to put on tiny shows.

I think the Chapel does these shows in a very small backyard type deal behind their venue.

No spot taken, but I bet those that go will have a good time.

"All of our upcoming June dates......"

50 people capacity - so yeah, pricey.

Looking forward to safer shows with more people and cheaper tickets.

gods willing there'll be a stream

where's my drummer?

Your drummer's daughter was at iron Springs last night

Molo was at TXR. I listened  to two songs outside before fairfax

It's not like he's a missing person or something

He plays on the moonalice webstream at 4:20 on most days.

The question that must be answered is why the mighty chief white cloud, God's cosmic timekeeper, Grammy award winner, and six armed human metronome, not on the DNB show bill?

>>>>The question that must be answered is why the mighty chief white cloud, God's cosmic timekeeper, Grammy award winner, and six armed human metronome, not on the DNB show bill?

New information became available today. Maybe this audio from 3/4/20 will shed a little light as to why Molo isn't playing with DNB. It appears to be a conflict between Molo and Nelson. Molo is playing currently with all the other members of the band except David. Below is audio, and transcript.

https://youtu.be/WOoWF3rr9-Q

The David Nelson Band, recorded in Hawaii on March 4, 2020.

The audio is presented twice...First is the raw audio, the second has been enhanced via filter to minimize crowd noise for greater clarity with the dialog. No editing has been done to this file.

After performing “Freight Train Boogie”, drummer John Molo completely loses his shit because David Nelson came in early during his drum solo. As David is thanking the audience, Molo starts screaming

MOLO: “You cut me off! Why did you cut me off man, you came in the middle of my drum solo. Mother Fucker!”

NELSON: “I cut him off? Molo is saying we cut him off”

Nelson verbally runs thru the chord changes when Molo cuts him off

MOLO: Rrrrrr! No David! It’s an open solo. I count it back in everytime.

NELSON: “I’m sorry...I didn’t realize that.”

The two go back and forth over how the song should proceed. Molo says he wants to go on to the next tune. He drops an angry F-Bomb. The exchange ends with Molo making a threat to quit the band.

NELSON: "OK! I'm an idiot!"

MOLO: “No I’ll say it now. Hey, when I’m not up here, you’ll know why.”

Tofu rises!!! Good to see you on the black screen. Hope all is well with you & yours.

Molo does sound a bit peeved in that recording.

Ouch.

Trouble in paradise.

Can't we all just get along???

Hi Lance. How are you?

I lurk here a little bit but post here so rarely that I keep forgetting my password. Then it takes a little effort to get back on, when I want to chime in. I have a temporary log in for 48 hours I think, but not sure how to reset permanently. I've done this before and had to ask Judit for help. I feel kinda stupid every time!

My wife and I are well, Thanks. Staying close to home mostly. I want to go to some shows, but will probably wait a while longer until they are more "normal" and less expensive hopefully.

I totally understand why bands need to make it pricey. Limited capacity, pent up demand, starving musicians and businesses. I get it, and don't blame the musicians and businesses for needing to make up for lost time. It's cool that some shows are happening and people are enjoying.

Been enjoying the Giants surprising season so far! I hope it stays this exciting all year.

Good people in this thread.

I hope Molo and Nelson can mend...

I was at the DNB show in Maui where the clip above was recorded. I didn't notice anything at the time. That was the show that got shut down mid-song, mid-set by the cops, and everybody had to leave. So we left.

and Hi, Johnny D!

Hang around a while Tofu!

This place could use some quality yet edgy perspective, without the bloody knife.

I look forward to seeing you & your better half in person sooner than later.

And it's a shame if there is a rift between Molo & David.

Not that it's the end of the world, I just like everyone to get along.

Ok, cool! I hope quality yet edgy perspective is more welcome here than on certain Facebook groups. The DNB fan group over there got bent out of shape when i tried to discuss the Molo/Nelson situation. oops, haha, not sorry! A lot of crazy over there, and even more people in denial of reality, even when new information becomes available that makes things pretty clear.

I will stick to music related topics here, and stay away from the politics threads. I'm not going to argue with those crazy Trumpers and other ignorant charlatans.

>>I was at the DNB show in Maui where the clip above was recorded. I didn't notice anything at the time. That was the show that got shut down mid-song, mid-set by the cops, and everybody had to leave. So we left.<<
I was there, didn't notice anything with Molo at the time either.  Cops shut it down, booooo.

Molo interview on PhilZone October 30, 2000 - LA, CA:

http://www.philzone.com/interviews/molo/

I had played with Bruce for about 20 years and you know, we'd play every once in a while and we knew each other just so well that I could tell when he wasn't diggin it and he could tell when I wasn't diggin it. Being a sideman for a singer/songwriter/bandleader you've got to be really supportive. I kind of swerved off the supportive track - not intentionally, but there were just moments where stuff would happen where either one of us wouldn't be diggin it...

So we were having these moments on stage, like I was saying before about being a really good sideman, you'd just have to be really enthusiastic, really supportive, and a bit of a yes man. Even if I was on the outside - he just knew me too well. ... So I remember I said to him a couple of times, you know, "Bruce, why don't you get some drummer that you really like playing with." He said, "Man, I like playing with you." I said, "Yeah, but not all the time. There's moments." So I don't know if he really heard it. I thought it fell on deaf ears....So we'd have this thing going on and we'd do duets and we'd jam…so we went out to sushi one night and that's when he said, "You know Molo, maybe you're right."

...I've played with band leaders before where someone will be soloing and they'll be looking at the audience and say, "Hey, keep soloing" and the solo may be over or in the middle or what have you. Phil is one of the few guys that's like, "Man, if the music is going to go on, it's going to go on!"

Uncool of Molo to throw a fit like that at a live show in front of everyone.. Should have waited till backstage. What a dick!

Wow do nothing reappears

mr flip flop

From cool to "fool"

I think tofu is just a little wound up from the pandemic and how expensive music is

He's a good guy and I like him but I don't know why he was on the rag yesterday

What's up Joel? left vm usually means left voicemail, but I haven't received a call from you. Are you mad because I posted stuff on social media that you would rather not be discussed? Too bad for you. You should know how to keep scrolling when you don't like a topic of discussion.

You can talk to me here if you want, but please keep it civil. Telling me to stfu is not helpful. Besides, you should know that I would do the opposite! I like you and enjoy our friendship, but if you are going to be like that, you can kiss my ass. I don't need to be accepted by the group.

The only reason I am not commenting there today, is to avoid continuing to argue fruitlessly with a clueless mob of people who are clearly not paying attention! Not everybody is an idiot, but... Some are quite stupid and/or have serious psychological issues they are projecting. Others are in denial. Some are innies who probably know the deal, and are trying to deflect, but doing it poorly because they are not politicians or skilled salesmen, and I see through the bullshit. Since when is lying, deflecting and attacking the messenger a virtue of hippie deadhead culture?

Facts don't matter in that group, just like any other group on social media. Most of them are no more or less smart, cool, tolerant or perceptive than the average Fox News reader who comments on their web page. They are just a different flavor of flawed human beings who don't think critically enough to make any sense. Most in that group could never step outside their little safe space cocoons to realize things like this about themselves, and admit it (to themselves, not me).

and most of all, don't you know that everything I'm suggesting there is probably accurate? I'd be surprised if you didn't.

>>>mr flip flop

pretty sure Tofu's a birkenstock kinda guy.  I only remember this because I spilled beer on his toes at TXR a while back... sorry man!

haha Hall, I'm more of a sneakers or light hiking shoe kinda guy. No problem about the beer spill. I'm sure it wasn't the first or last time I was a schlimazel.

keep on keeping on brother

That facebook thread must be a doozy. Are Pyramid & Timpane over there?

And since there is open speculation as to why Molo isn't playing with DNB on these new shows, Tofu's submission seems fair enough and pretty on-point, especially since it's Molo himself who is pretty clearly heard saying, "when I’m not up here, you’ll know why".

Molo sounds really pissed in that audio, so if he has indeed decided to not play with the DNB anymore there's probably more to it than just that one issue, but... he sounds really pissed in that audio, and that last quote sounds pretty definitive.

On it goes.

It's not just 1 thing but the combination of factors that leads one to believe that a Molo/Nelson conflict is the reason for the change of drummers for these shows.

Molo's blowup at Nelson in Hawaii captured on audio recording + Molo replaced by Leone for upcoming gigs + Molo currently playing in Moonalice and California Kind with every other DNB member except Nelson. Connect the dots.

Some of the arguments on Facebook trying to debunk my suggestions are very amusing. Also amusing is 350 people telling me they "don't care" haha this on a page that rarely gets 10 comments on a thread. Another doozy is several people suggesting that it would be more appropriate for me to contact Molo directly and ask him why he isn't gigging with DNB, rather than posting on a fan group page, because it is "none of my business"!

and Joel, we're cool.

We fans always want to think our heroes are perfect and and always wonderful, kind people.

Fans are silly people.

I remember when I used to think the members of the Grateful Dead must all be flowers, rainbows & butterflies.

I was a silly person.

As for this subject, in the two seconds of thought I gave it initially I figured Molo probably just had other commitments in June, but after hearing that audio, well, nobody's perfect.

Whatever. Leone is a good drummer and is different than Molo, so he'll bring something different to the party.

>>>Leone is a good drummer and is different than Molo, so he'll bring something different to the party.

Good point. Since they are only doing a few shows, and have to break in a new drummer, maybe the band will pick a small core of songs to rehearse and play well. Barry, Mookie & Pete are such great pro musicians that I know they will make the best of the situation.

My biggest concern about DNB is what kind of shape David Nelson is in, physically in terms of health, and as an aging musician, I wonder if he practices guitar often enough to keep his chops sharp (and his mind), or if he is lazy and sedentary when he isn't playing gigs and lets his chops get rusty and his mind get foggy. I hope it is the former, but think it may be the latter.

I'm waiting for TXR show info to be announced, before deciding if I will buy expensive, socially distanced, masked, mystery boxed dinner included tickets. Maybe.

Pretty funny to get in a tiff over a "drum solo" in Freight Train Boogie...

Molo's probably pissed he ended up playing in a bar band.

David Nelson probably can't remember what solo goes where anymore.

DNB fans can be a bunch of smug, "we're-all-innie-hippies-and-you're-not" assholes.

I love 'em all.

^ and let's face it, it's the sound mix that makes that band... it sounds killer in any environment - tiny bar to outdoor stage. If the soundman wasn't that talented, it would be just a bunch of weird old guys plunkin away like a "New Riders of the Jefferson Starship 40th Edition" or something just as nostalgic.

From my perspective Molo and Sears are the new guys. The DNB rhythm sectionwas Art Steinhorn and Billy Laymon so I don't get all the fuss about personnel changes.....fucking newbies.

I just like Molo and Sless playing together.

I'm just hoping I can see some version of the DNB sometime in the foreseeable future.

Timmy is awesome on the board

and Martha is a big part of the glue

The guitar tech became Santana's guitar tech

There is so much talent and love and energy

And the tribe ( smug or not ) glows with energy and love

And David Nelson is pretty much a national treasure

Just for fun name a band that has exact same lineup as 40 years ago

And how many keyboard players played with the grateful dead while we're at it

What's interesting to me is that Tofu head brought up the question of attrition by conflict on the Facebook page and people blamed him for bringing it up. I think your wording had a little to do with that, Tofu head, but that became a Philzone-worthy maelstrom.

Some person in the know may share what s/he knows (I have no idea who that might be) or may not but at least the Band will play on in a configuration that Sless can work with as he leads the band and does the bookings.

National Treasures deserve the opportunity to play without strife and ill-feelings.

^^^Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, & YES!

so i chose to call it flip flopping...

and I did not agree with mr tofu's approach / language / arguing yesterday about the FANS  must know Molo

why

do you hate " old people" as you try to throw geritol shade?  ageism on board again

have a good day sir

Judit, I am open to constructive criticism that would help me become a better writer, so I reread my original post on FB, as objectively as I can, and could not find anything that I wrote that was offensive or antagonizing in my original post, and certainly nothing that would trigger sane, smart, reasonable people to lose their minds and want me tarred and feathered.

Yet the lynch mob attacked me immediately and relentlessly, without a willingness to consider a logical argument, and the facts presented. Even after hard evidence of Molo/Nelson conflict was provided to support the circumstantial evidence, they still insisted I was making stuff up. Not smart, sane or reasonable.

The disconnected-from-reality response from the oversensitive hippies was no less unreasonable than a Trump supporter insisting that Trump really won the 2020 election, even after every court in the land rejected every claim of election fraud. The disconnected from reality, oversensitive hippies will probably never be able to understand that they responded so unreasonably, but it is true. Most of the folks in that group displayed the same utter lack of critical thinking ability as the Trumpers most of them probably despise, and perhaps argue with on the internet.

An interesting study in human psychological fallacies, and dysfunctional social behavior.

>>>An interesting study in human psychological fallacies, and dysfunctional social behavior<<<

The gift of "discussion boards" & social media in general.

They don't create psychological fallacies and dysfunction, they reveal them.

Is it dysfunctional to want to read that facebook page? Because I'm curious now if the animosity toward Tofu is because folks think it isn't anyone's business about what may have occurred between Molo & Nelson, or if people just don't want to believe that a rift/negativity among their heroes could be true?

People are silly.

And Tofu, did you use that comparison to Trumpers on that facebook page, or just on here? If you did, I bet THAT got quite the response.

>Alan, your the dude that bangs rocks, right?<

Correct. Also on my resume is a long "musical relationship" with DNB'sl East Coast members -- only since we grew up in the same neighborhood and are about the same age and ran in the same circles.

I don't remember Sless playing at my friends' bar mitzvah parties, but he could have. He definitely made me some sandwiches at the nearby deli. Arthur Steinhorn, Charlie Crane, and Mookie were some of the other local musicians. Thus, when they showed up on the West coast I was an "early adopter."  Technically I probably saw Sears (Starship) and David Nelson (NRPS) live first, but I was a big Cowboy Jazz fan back in late 70s, cause they were really something back then. So when Barry started playing with David Nelson, I probably went to Dead Ringers shows to see him (local boy makes good).

I think outside of a few hardcore New Riders fans, Nelson is "worshipped" more for his integral connections to Garcia/the sixties, than his musicianship and songwriting. Glad he's still kickin, though. And I do think the superb sound quality at DNB shows makes them unique among jambands. But they are basically still a bar/ barn band.

I do find many of the DNB fans mildly pretentious, but harmless -- unless you have to sit next to one of them on a plane yammering about how their dope is the best, their crowd is the kindest, their scene is the ...blah, blah, blah.

It's all good.

just sayin'...pete sears is no bar band player. i mean he does... but they individually and collectively are much better than that. cool baltimore connection tho rock man.

and yes, the clique can be thick for sure.

>>>pete sears is no bar band player

Fuckin beast or was.   Listening to a fair bit of 2008 and 2009 and there are some peak performances in there.

Tofu head, rereading it today I don't get the same feeling; now it seems like an innocuous query. I'm glad I reread it to see that.

That's such a tight group of people and they defend their David, whether or not there's been an actual attack. There's no accounting for ballistic reactions.

We love them because they click

         >>>>>Clique! On<<<<<

And fyi Pete is on over 200 albums I believe

NRPS / David / DEAD intertwined > good

In my realm provides me joy for over 50 years > meaningful

Still kicking it after so long > incredibly awesome

And for what it's worth again David is a highly entertaining and amazing story teller as well a solid song writer and player > B blenders Uber alles

I have no idea what your definition of bar band is, but just because they don't play for huge audiences doesn't mean I am not allowed to think of them as the best band in the land.
(mildly pretensions or not)

"viva la differance ".
"Because the fans want to GO"

The real sauce is the combination of Molo and Pete here, specifically as a rhythm section.

*this* is what elevated the already existing configuration, and breathed new life into the DNB. (around late 2007 if memory serves correctly.)

sure, the music will still be great.

just no great white clouds and no white lightning anymore, and that's very unfortunate.

also agree Tim steigler's ears and fingers are as important to the sound as David's are

>Fuckin beast or was.<

still was as of a year ago in HI.

No Pagan White Cloud Gods tolerated at the Chapel...

>>>Tofu, did you use that comparison to Trumpers on that facebook page, or just on here? If you did, I bet THAT got quite the response.

I did use the Trumper comparison on the Facebook page, in a reply to someone who continued to insist that it was a simple scheduling conflict, after the audio was provided. It went over his head. He replied immediately with a LOL trying to ridicule me, thinking I was labeling him a Trump supporter. He apparently didn't understand that I was making an analogy, not suggesting that he himself was a Trump supporter.

Once people get defensive, feeling they are being attacked, misunderstood, treated unreasonably or accused of things that aren't true, good things like tact, diplomacy, empathy and patience often disappear, making communication nearly impossible. As a highly flawed human being myself (self deprecating phrase stolen from David Crosby), I am guilty of those things too, and realize that once the shit show got started, some of my replies to people were insulting and condescending, and were not going to help me win friends and influence people. But it was fun, and doesn't hurt anyone in any tangible way in the real world.

Molo is a tremendously great drummer for this type of music, but not the only guy who can get the job done. I've seen and listened to DNB shows with Wally Ingram, Bill Kreutzmann, and whoever was drumming prior to 2007, and thought it was all very good music without longing for Molo. If Molo returns to DNB in August for the Days Between shows, that's great, but if not it is not tragic.

Pete Sears is more vital to the band, in my opinion. Nothing against Bill Layman. Bill is a competent player, but just not in the same league as a musician as Pete. I used to see the band sporadically prior to 2007 and enjoyed. It was the addition of Pete Sears that elevated DNB to Best Band In The Land status for me, from the time I first saw him groove with Barry Sless until about 2015 when David got injured and sick. A fabulous and impressive 8 year run! Nothing lasts forever though. The band is still excellent, but I doubt they will ever reach the heights that they achieved during that 2007-2015 period.

Tofu

well done above

That 6/27/09 show is awesome! I haven't listened to this one in a long time, and enjoyed it today. Great recommendation Mice Elf!

>>>>> The band is still excellent, but I doubt they will ever reach the heights that they achieved during that 2007-2015 period.

Yup.

>>>The real sauce is the combination of Molo and Pete<<<

I have heard this repeatedly throughout the years that I've been seeing DNB. I have no real opinion on this, as while I've been seeing the band for a long time, I've never seen them without Molo & Sears, but it's interesting that a very deep & very dedicated long-time DNB devote once told me that he actually preferred the band before those two came along.

It was his personal opinion that they had a lighter, spacier flow and would go into different places in their jams, where with heavier, stronger Molo & Sears many of their jams would build & climax in a similar, slightly predictable way, something I have always thought as well.

I mention this just because it's always interesting how the same thing can affect some people so differently than other people.

It would be funny if they gave Tony Leone a 15 minute drum solo at each show.

That WOULD be funny, but not to me if I was at that show.

I play the drums and I love drums, but I hate drum solos.

Ginger Baker!

Him too.

Showin' off chops is all extended drum solos are.

Meh.

Of all the great players I've ever seen, Buddy's solos are the only ones that have really impressed/entertained me.

Beat that.

(You can't)

This a test... taps microphone.

Get it??!!

You always pass the test Ro.

Can you play the drums?

Lance, that's cool you saw Buddy Rich. I'm more of an Art Blakey guy, but I never saw either.

Great section in Bill Graham's biography about how he hated the rock n roll drum solo, so he booked Buddy Rich on a bill with some SF rock bands, to try to broaden the kids horizons.

I suppose Neil Peart's extravagance with Rush wasn't your thing either?

I'm a Milt Holland fan, but only because he was like an uncle to me when I was young. Actually, his session work with so many artists was really fine.

Similar to the Rads, try throwing semi-shade on DNB and you will bear the consequences.

Yea Turtle! Just looking at the 3/7/20 set list brings back fond memories of the last show of my only Hawaii DNB run. Mookie singing Twilight gives me chills and makes me tear up. Sandwiched in between Ghost Train Blues and Cut and Run, WOW it was a wonderful ride. I can feel the warm tropical breeze on my skin, and picture the scene in my head like it was yesterday.

the drumming on the particular track i posted, coconut wireless, is amazing.

such a good idea at the time. this was only my 2nd time doing any of the hi shows.

Doubt the band would play Coconut Wireless without Molo. Seems like Sless arranged the song with him in mind, and the drumming is a big part of that song.

Gonna listen to that version from Maui later.

Even less likely that they will play beat it

If no molo

>>>Doubt the band would play Coconut Wireless without Molo<<<

If that's true then at least there's one good thing about Molo not being in the band.

(duck)

I kid, I kid.

(But I don't like that song)

well....we're waiting....!

i meant ro. :)

damn that was rad. see you kids soon.

Where you been Ro?

Was in NYC last week to weekend then hit TXR show with Zooey and so many friends that I have missed during Covid for that Astral band ... they were amazing.

Then to the Chapel - Soundawg passed his time fishing -

ha!

who knew he is quite the fisherman?!

to answer

he simply said

we have someone who wants to play with us

Tony lives in Brooklyn

Think he is the new guy now

Molo is the heart for me of DNB so that's why I asked.

>we have someone who wants to play with us<

Once you get a taste of that MoonAlice money and  get used to traveling in style, I guess it's hard to go play a show crammed in Pete's Kia with 4 other guys, eat cold veggie burritos and sleep in a borrowed tent... I mean, who needs the aggravation ?

(yes I know Molo plays for love, but...)

And that band had perfectly good drummers for their first 15-ish years; I'm sure they'll do just fine.

trippy. well we can speculate all we want. seemed like the unit was a unit.

i'll surely miss the cymbal work, like a wave melting to the shore morphing back to the sea...

i don't get it.

hmmm RO not pertinent?

I did *not* miss the spaceship. ;)

MarkD, SF was almost 30 degrees cooler than southern Silicon Valley that afternoon... when I left the house at 5 to head north my car thermometer said 104!

Ah, the beauty of the Bay Area micro-climates.

Personally, I don't mind the south bay heat in the summers, but my little dog does and it's nice to be able to head over to the coast or up to Golden Gate Park (especially in this COVID no-traffic era) for a very comfortable afternoon walk.

And BTW LLOLLO, you don't live in southern Silicon Valley, you actually live in northern Silicon Valley.

But it's still the "south bay".

God love it.

JJ, you got a little heat stroke?

I'm not sure I've ever seen a double-post almost two hours apart.

Cool down and stay hydrated buddy, there's a good, long summer ahead.

Nice edit.

Stay cool JJ.

ALL areas of the BA need you rockin'.

I stand corrected, thank you.

Sorry LLOLLO.

Retired or not, teachers gotta' teach.
