Domain Name Renewal question

Forums:

Hi there. So, I've had my domain name for many years. It's treatisland.com , from Treat Island, the name of a place I came up with and use as a name for my art business.

I don't use it for anything these days, I just keep it because I think it's cool and I've had it for so long.

It's up for renewal in a few days and I've been trying to figure out if I want to renew it. I'm not planning to use it, but I also don't want anyone else to use it for what they might think Treat Island is. I know there's a Treat Island off Maine.

The renewal would cost ~$50 for the next year. I have very little money and $50 matters. I hate that $50 will determine what I do with this long held thing, but I've had some large expenses lately and my income is a set low amount.

So, what would you do? Thoughts?

I would try to just let it go. Maybe give the town in Maine a call, offer it up for $500 or something before your deadline. I was in a similar situation and in retrospect it was not a big deal (to me). I hope it works out either way.

You should be able to get something called Domain Expiration Protection from the company that hosts the domain. It's about $10 and it hold the domain for you for a year so no one else can take it.

I'll look into that, jg8142. It might be easier for me to let it go slowly.  Thanks.

Whatever you decide, judit, I hope you have any content there backed up.

Great suggestion, mike, but I don't think I've ever used it. That's one of the reasons it should be easy for me to let it go.

I talked with a representative about the Domain Expiration Protection and the info is the kind that sort of pisses me off. Catch 22: I wanted to sign up for it since I am still current so it would protect the name if I lapse, but I can only sign up for it if I sign up for another year. Huh? Oh well.

Treat Island would be a pretty cool name for a dispensary, lol.   Good Luck Judit, wish I was in a position to help out!

Thanks, Noodler. That would just postpone...

It would be a good name for a dispensary, yes.

I think I'll get in touch with the Zoner Shakedownst 14 - she's the person who knows about Treat Island the island.

Well, that's some knee-deep bullshit.

Isn't it?

Seems like a lot for a registration. I don't think mine are that much, even with privacy. I can check tomorrow. You can register a domain with lots of people.

Hi Slickrock. That's the actual cost rounded up, and if more than one year it would be less per year, with Network Solutions.  I was doing 3 years at a time, which made it better.

Yes, Let me know what you find out, and with whom it's registered. Thanks.

Slickrock turned me on to registration with a company he knows and it'll be a much better ($21) yearly cost. I'll transfer my name tomorrow, going out to hear music and dance in the country in a few minutes, but I'm happy and it feels easy. Thanks again, Slickrock.

Yay Slick!!   Love it when a plan comes together.  Have a blast Judit. Kick up them heals.

Long live treatisland.com!

Thanks, Trailhead!

Who knew there could be so many steps to transfer a domain name.  I can't remember when I first registered it, nor if I transferred it years ago. I think I did, from godaddy (terrible politics) to Network Solutions, who provided good customer service but had gotten too expensive for something I wasn't sure I still wanted.

Both the support and billing people at the company Slickrock suggested, xmission.com, are gentle, knowledgeable, efficient, kind, amazingly helpful, patient, in other words, a good fit for someone like me who always has questions and thinks granularly. I'm happy.

It's done! I still don't have any plans for treatisland.com but things change. You never know.

I did hear back from Shakedownst 14, who wrote: Our Treat Island is conservation land so no cool island dweller even to claim your domain name!
