I went out yesterday with my son in the storm (good father son moments) to refill the bird feeder with seed and load the wire basket with fat trimmed from a rib roast. Those birds will eat well. As I was clearing the snow off the driveway this morning, A large woodpecker did a flyby near me as if it could say " thanks bro" . i love the bird feeder. its right outside the kitchen window. We can all eat together. As far as attracting rodents, well they just attract the hawks and perhaps an osprey if we are lucky.
Goddamned Woodpeckers really did a number on my house this past year - pecked clear thru the rake boards in many areas on the sides of my gabled roof & drilled a hole clear thru the soffit board to make a nest. Not sure what they're after, as it's all Cedar wood coated w/protective stain, which is supposed to be insect resistant, but maybe there's some new Invasive beetle species or the cedar wood is just plain worn out (house was built in 1988). I climbed up my extension ladder to inspect the damage & see no evidence of dry rot or insects so am Bamboozled. I have to get a new roof this year so that repair work will be included in the job.
We had a bird feeder in our backyard and a Cooper's Hawk nest in the front. I felt that we were fattening up the hawks' meals. Fallen seeds fed the rodents, which attracted the neighborhood cats, which shat all over the yard. Quite the ecosystem.
My daughter gave me a hummingbird feeder for Christmas, which we plan to hang near a window. Though we currently have no seed feeder, there are plenty of birds, who seem to find items of interest in our three backyard trees (Hawks were eventually kicked out of their nest during the crow/hawk/squirrel turf war a few years ago).
Speaking of feathered friends, here is the recently deceased Mimi:
She was eight-years-old, blind in one eye, and hadn't been able to perch for over a year, but amazingly she was still laying eggs up until this past summer. Sadly, she passed away last week during the coldest night in many years. Being unable to perch, she couldn't get up with the other hens in the coop and stay warm and the cold, old age, and general infirmity pushed her over the edge. She was a good chicken, even when she would escape the yard and start running down the street. Ground was finally soft enough today to dig a hole for her in the backyard chicken cemetery.
went to sussex county fair and purchased 6 chicks years ago when my irish farm girl cousin had just come to this country and was renting the upstairs apt. next thing ya know this girl had me building a coop.neighbors complained, cops arrived, and we had to get rid of these chickens but where?
van saun park in paramus has identical chickens running around. the two of us pulled up about 5 am and threw the cluckers over the fence. there was a retiree working night security. he started toward us when he saw us and began trotting when he saw us tossing birds over the fence. we got out of there in a hurry. they looked like Mimi.
woodpeckers? im jealous. saw one a few months ago and dont remember seeing one around here before (25 yrs give or take)
we had to move our feeding operation off our deck because of our cat, now i put it in the back yard in the morning when the cat is not around.
recently we have had a huge bunch of doves move in, now one of them likes to hang around on a tree branch and watch me through a window, ''hey we're out here you know remember us, your doves, i see you in there''....
we have everything but the cardinals are always the first, they just appear within 30 seconds, poof..
30 pound bag of primo at walmart for 25 bucks, can't be beat
Thanks for the reminder ! I have a nice sack of Sunflower + Millet and whatever in a secure rodent-proof trash can. I just sprinkle a few handfuls on a plastic bucket lid, as I don't own a feeder. No kittehs, so they are safe here.

No seriously, same thing with dogs or cats.
Why is it an otherwise sensible person will walk up to a really cute / fluffy dog and start babbling in "baby talk" while petting said creature vivaciously, when for all this person knows it could be the "Charles Manson" of dogs?!?

We get a family of black vultures in the winter. It took me awhile to appreciate them. They're a bit pushy if you don't keep them at bay, but they're intelligent and family oriented. For 2 summers we had a mama and baby living in the barn. My girly named them Bach & baby bach. (Big Ass CHicken) lolol...
The chickens stop laying eggs in the winter. But for the last couple of days, they have been very chatty and lo and behold, found this in the nest box today:
First egg of 2017! A sign that this long, brutal winter may be wrapping up.
I really enjoy dem birdies. I have become obsessed in taking photos. I have a feeder located 30 ft from the house on the edge of some woods. That way they can try to hide from predators. Then i can use my zoom lens to get some shots. I like sit on the deck and "watch" the birds. Really Its just watching the woods and meditating w beer+snack+stuff . My neighbor down the way is battling them pesky woodpeckers in his house. Maybe a fake owl sideshow? You are lucky string! I saw (and photographed) my first great horned owl last week. 15 crows mobbed it up a tree. Also caught a pileated woodpecker recently. At the feeder its the usual characters but i get rare ones now and again. I find it peaceful. I see that little deer Fog!
