Downsizing and Packing

Forums:

It's weird when you start to put your stuff into boxes, which are kind of like the life boats on a sinking ship for your stuff.  If it makes the cut, it gets in the box.  If it ain't in a box, it ain't comin' with you.  It's strange how some stuff makes you feel guilty for either giving it away, throwing it away, or selling it...but particularly throwing it away.  It's like "dude, you kept me around all this time for this?"  and you're like "Sorry, man, I didn't want it to end this way".

To stuff that makes the cut, and stuff you leave behind.  Cheers.

I'm gonna go to the supermarket
I'm gonna go to the liquor store
I'm gonna get me some cardboard boxes
You know what them boxes are for
I'm gonna rent me a U-Haul trailer
It on the back of my old car
Call up some of my stronger buddies
That's what your strong buddies are for

We're gonna move
We're gonna move, yeah, move

Give it to the Salvation Army or the Goodwill
We've got so much junk it's a joke
Wrap a knickknack in some old newspaper
I know it was a present, but the damn thing broke
Your old shoes and my old T-shirts
My strong buddies crave ice cold beers
Don't throw that away; it's a family heirloom
I've had that ashtray for 15 years

We're gonna move
We're gonna move, yeah, move

We're gonna empty out our old place
Move into a brand new better space; move

We got the books and the records and the tapes and the pictures
And the pots and the pans and all the breakable glass
The living room couch and the dining room table
The washer and the dryer; what a pain in the ass
We've got the TV and the home entertainment center
The box spring and the queen-size bed
We got the Christmas decorations and the bureau and the playpen
If we had a piano, I think I'd drop dead

We're gonna move
We're gonna move, yeah, move

At the end day, the old place is empty
And the new place houses all of our stuff
Unpack all the crap in the cardboard boxes
It wasn't that bad; no, it wasn't so rough
My strong buddies look a little bit grumpy
I don't why I broke my butt
Tomorrow we'll call up the telephone company
And get another set of house keys cut

We're gonna move
We're gonna move, yeah, move

I can tell by the look on your face
You just love our brand new better space, baby, move

We're gonna move, we're gonna move
We're gonna move, we're gonna move
Yeah, move

In the middle of this right now. The purge. It's good to do every once in a while.

So long treadmill! I hardly knew ya

I can relate.  Good luck on your moving and packing to both Schwa and Hounder.

Thanks for those lyrics, Surfdead.  I'm gonna go find that song and play it as I walk around looking for survivors to put in the boat.

Good luck on your move, Hounder.  I'm kind of in the limbo phase of the move.  We don't have a place in Cali yet, our house isn't on the market yet, but it's obvious that a 4 bedroom 3 and a half bath house in the Livermore area is probably not in our budget at this time, so we are downsizing.  I am going around more or less getting the house ready to get ready to get put on the market within the next few weeks, and packing up stuff we're gonna take, and purging what we aren't.  Fortunately, we hired a professional organizer to come in and help us get our closets, basement, and garage in order.  That is helping this process a bunch.  We did a HUGE purge of stuff then.  It's just amazing how much more is still left.  At least most of what's left in the basement, closets and garage is already in bins and ready to move.

Thanks Siobud.

I can't post a link but if someone can post a link to Louden Wainwright III 's song Cardboard Boxes it would be most appropriate for this thread.

edit,,,I did not see surfdeads post.

Thanks all. Lot going on right now. Cleaning out the current house and getting it ready to sell, moving shit over to new place and tearing out bathroom at new place in time for the plumber and electrician. One cool thing I found between the floor joists was a ny times from december 1940. It was pretty crumbly but readable. I think I'm going to come across a lot of neat stuff like that living here. Oh yeah-Mrs H has a herniated disc on top of everything else going on. Fun times. It's ok, it will all work out in the end, it always does. We've been very lucky like that. Someday I'll post some pics of the new(old) place. 172 years old. wow

George Carlin had some great thoughts about stuff. "Everybody's gotta have a little place for their stuff. That's all life is about. Trying to find a place for your stuff."

Good luck with the moves guys. I've been fortunate. Lived in the same house my whole life.

Chuck, I've lived in my house for 42 years, sort of like some people's whole lives. I've been fortunate because I haven't had to get rid of stuff, but unfortunate because I've almost never gotten rid of anything till the last couple of years. I still have some of Greg's things and can't get rid of possible art/craft supplies and that's most of what I have. It's not crowded but it's a little crazy.

I work on this a little everyday - if I were to die sooner than I hope I wouldn't want anyone else to have to figure out what to do the things I have.

Lived up here for 34 years. almost to the day. We have no garage or rented storage. Stuff is a problem.

Moved in on Feb. 6, 1976, Surfdead, what was your date?

It's a little vague. We took possession 2-1-84 - there was an immediate water leak that had to be dealt with. Started moving stuff in around the 15th, started sleeping there around the 20th, and were all moved in by March 1.

When you live in the same place for years and years, you end up with stuff like this can of cornmeal I found the other day while cleaning out a cupboard at my girlfriend's house.  It had a Dec. 2006 "best if used by" date:

That's pretty funny Ken.

that's all I went through  last summer before moving- very nostalgic at times

a LOT of stuff got tossed or sold - had to lighten my load.

Half of it's still in those boxes.

I really miss George Carlin.

I worry about that too Judit.

I think I should have done a better job of cutting down on my stuff when I moved last spring.

I hear 'ya Judit. Been in my house all of my 49 years & may end up moving in the next couple just because my brother & I don't need the whole house. I can't imagine all of the stuff scattered throughout, esp. since my mom loved to keep mementos. Now that she's gone, it's going to make that particular stuff harder to part with.

I miss Carlin too Mark. There's an old theater near me that doesn't get used near as much as it should & he loved it. He used to be there at least once a year.

The more you possess, the more you are possessed?

or:

"but everything you gather
is just more that you can lose"

Or:

There's nothing you can hold for very long.

Good Luck w/ the move,  Mr. Schwa.  Before you throw them out, I'll speak up for those dusty old McIntosh tube amps.

Heck,  even if they're not dusty.

About a year ago, we (my brother, sister and I) had to move my aunt to a memory care facility and were tasked with cleaning out her house and selling it. She had lived in this house that her parents (my grandparents) built since the late 50's. There was a lot of "stuff" to get rid of and cleaning to do to get it presentable for sale. We all ended up with some photo albums and some "stuff" we felt worth keeping.

Long story short, once we got it sold and did the final clean out we realized that this house was the longest constant in our lives, visiting it regularly on holidays and for various family gatherings since the day we were born. It was very bittersweet and I became verklempt as we locked the door for the last time and drove away.

Memories they can't be boughten
They can't be won at carnivals for free
Well it took me years
To get those souvenirs
And I don't know how they slipped away from me

Cornbread wraps it up with some John Prine. Nice.

Yeah, that brought a tear to my eye.
