DUNE

Forums:

Interesting film.   I think if you go in thinking it will be good, it will live up to those thoughts.  And likewise, if you want to find flaws, you can do that too.

Overall I enjoyed it and am hopeful they make the follow-up.  Visually stunning if not a bit stark and less gritty than the original.  This version tells the story better but for those who are not familiar with it, yet still tricky to follow the first go-round (ie my kids and wife).  A little bit better character development would be nice considering they split the movie into two.

Go to the sho....movies.  On HBO max for just one month and then only in theaters for the short term.

.

I've heard nothing but great reviews.

i'm thinking of going to the movies after work this week, but plan on seeing the Velvet Underground documentary.

Reviews have been mixed.   I've read about a half dozen and most are critical.   It does feel like a 2:30 set up to the second movie but as someone who enjoys the story, I enjoy most anything and everything they give to us.   I never watched the mini series version so that may be next on my list. Some people are partial to that version.  The original has grown on me. I think I like it more than most.

I have been thinking about it all weekend. I really enjoyed the film, but was unaware that it was being split into 2 parts when I started it. It was visually stunning and very entertaining. It felt to me like I could not look away at all for fear of missing something important. It was 2.5 hours long and still moved at break-neck speed through only a portion of the story. It left me a little baffled.  I plan on watching again this week. Enjoy it!

I went with no expectations.

It's beautifully "shot" 2.5hr set up to the second movie, with a pretty good soundtrack.

Loved it. This is a big screen movie, and more importantly big sound movie. The sound track alone is amazing.

I'm glad I didn't go to the Theater to see Dune. The Movie moved way too slow and was too long, but I did enjoy it watching it over the course of 2 days. I like SciFi, but Dune never grabbed me - read it years ago when everyone was raving about it. I was more into Issac Asimov. I'm content watching just about anyting on the home screen though. I think the last movie I saw in the Theater was the "final" Star Wars movie and I fell asleep in the reclining comfy chairs. Think I decided then to skip the theaters and well with Covid, I'm not in any rush to return.

Overall visually impressive, but a bit mono-chromatic and sterile. While the David Lynch version is flawed (no fault of his own), it still has more memorable 'colorful' scenes and set pieces to me (the 'brain alien' in the tank being one). The current version, however, has more coherent storytelling, although it's an unfair comparison due to it being only 'Part 1'. The characters were ok, although Jason Momoa seems like a one-note actor and came off kinda stiff. I would recommend seeing it in the cinema (which I didn't, but wish I had) for its sheer epic-ness.

If you like to know how the sausage is made.

That breakdown is incredible and demonstrates the pains DV took in creating this movie. I could listen to do that guy talk about film composition all day. Great link.

If you're watching this at home (over two days? Lol jesus) you are sorely missing out on a singular and awesome cinematic experience. Fear is the mind killer...

Oh, and Part II has been greenlighted. https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/dune-2-greenlit-movi...
